Two words: Skyward Sword. Great game, ridiculous expectations.

I feel like I'm in the minority here, but Skyward Sword was one of the worst Zelda games I've ever played. Even as a regular game is was just okay when it wasn't holding my hand. Yes I had high expectations, but even then the game was just alright - very forgettable.

That's funny, because I feel like I'm in the minority and I love it. It has problems, but all games do, and SS's issues don't stop me from enjoying it.

Maybe there is no majority on this matter.

Smack middle 50-50 hey? It's possible.

I feel like they are dropping the ball on a lot of games. SS, TP, ST, and PH were all pretty sucky Zelda games in my opinion. Other M was a terrible Metroid game. Now Mario is starting to suck with SM3DL and now it's expansion pack SM3DW. I don't like that their biggest franchises are getting worse and worse.

On the other hand, their more niche franchises are getting awesome installments: FE, AC, Pikmin, Luigi's Mansion.

I prefer to think we're both the minorities on this issue.

A few weeks ago I would have said they're failing to live up to their usual standards.
With Pikmin 3, however, I feel they're back to their usual brilliant selves.

From what I understand, you can't use the Gamepad to select or throw Pikmin. I thought the whole point of the game was to show off what the controller could do; RTS games are something that would work a lot better on a Pad than a controller.

So if it doesn't take advantage of Wii U, in what ways is the game "progressing" as Iwata says?

Pikmin 3 began as a Wii game, so no, it's not made to show off the controller. That said, using it as a realtime map and being able to guide your parties on it is pretty cool.

Pikmin 3 progresses more in the form of its mechanics, taking the established Pikmin formula and streamlining it, and adding more multitasking elements.

Skyward Sword’s hate was directed at how little Nintendo bothered to innovate the series. Gamers expect something new and fresh with each literation of Zelda, so getting more of the same was somewhat of a kick in the face.

Skyward Sword's controls  were the biggest innovation for the series since the move to 3D in 1998.

I think the overall expectations stay the same. It's just when they underdeliver with the hardware and third party support we expect more from their first party games to compensate.

Fortunately Iwata seems to be doing everything in his power to rectify that.

Indeed. With the Wii U, Nintendo did everything in their might to make people not care about them anymore. Such an awful console.

but yet you still bought it

Comparatively yes, but not when you consider that the use of the Wii mote by that point was very familiar. When I say innovate the series, I mean give gamers an experience they hadn't previously had. I'm not calling the game bad, I enjoyed what I played of it, I’m just saying the criticism was well placed.

The Wiimote was familiar but Motion Plus hadn't been used much in a traditional genre.
