A few weeks ago I would have said they're failing to live up to their usual standards.
With Pikmin 3, however, I feel they're back to their usual brilliant selves.

From what I understand, you can't use the Gamepad to select or throw Pikmin. I thought the whole point of the game was to show off what the controller could do; RTS games are something that would work a lot better on a Pad than a controller.

So if it doesn't take advantage of Wii U, in what ways is the game "progressing" as Iwata says?

Pikmin 3 began as a Wii game, so no, it's not made to show off the controller. That said, using it as a realtime map and being able to guide your parties on it is pretty cool.

Pikmin 3 progresses more in the form of its mechanics, taking the established Pikmin formula and streamlining it, and adding more multitasking elements.
