Forums - Gaming - The top 10 bestselling PS3 games really shows how FPS is the strongest genre on the platform. Six of the top 10 titles are an FPS. However...

... the top 10 is more diverse than the Xbox 360 top 10 where eight of the top 10 titles are an FPS.

I myself get kinda worried about the one-sided style of gaming production nowadays, even though I 've been playing FP games since way back in the day.

I think FPS games are just a phase, like racing games of the 6th gen

As more Years go by, it gets more stupid to do the whole "so many games in the Top 10 are FPS!" argument.

When the biggest game on the planet releases Yearly, then that said series will dominate sales lists. 5 out of those 6 games on PS3 are Call of Duty games. 5 out of the 8 on 360 are Call of Duty games.

Instead of simply doing the Top 10, it should be the Top 10 franchises.

After looking outside of the Top 10 games on each platform, between places 11 and 50...

PS3 has 5 FPS titles - CoD: WaW, Resistance FoM, Killzone 2, Battlefield BC2 and MoH.

360 has 7 FPS titles - Battlefield 3, CoD: WaW, Halo 3 ODST, L4D2, Battlefield BC2, L4D and Borderlands.

Pretty much, outside of the Call of Duty dominance in the Top 5 of each list, things arent too focused on FPS. Without the CoD explosion, the lists have far more variety.

I like your line of thought, but it doesn't explain why so big a limitation in gender (or why exactly is CoD the biggest franchise, what is honestly beyond me - more on that later). That is what troubles me.

If you take out COD FPS are not really that popular on PS3 when compared with the 360.

Without COD

PS3                                         360                   360 without Halo

1 car game                          1 msc                1 FPS

1 FPS game                         1 RPG               1 race

2 Sport games                    1 TPS                1 RPG

6 action games                  2 Action           2 msc

                                              5 FPS                2 action

                                                                        3 TPS

Franchise can only be counted once eg, only 1 halo, 1 cod, 1 Uncharted.

PS3                                      360

1 Race                               1 msc

1 Sport                              1 RPG

1 Platformer                    1 TPS

2 FPS                                 1 Race

5 Action                           3 FPS

                                          3 Action

As you can see 360 owners prefer shooters in general, TPS/FPS. PS3 owners heavily favour action games.

Cod is just stupidly popular. Outside cod and Halo, action games are the biggest genre.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

CoD is currently the biggest franchise because of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

The game was the first mega popular console FPS in the modern day. It had well balanced maps. It had well balanced weapons. It had well balanced perks and killstreak rewards. Anyone could pick up the game and play it with friends as it had a fairly easy learning curve. The campaign was actually fun, too.

CoD4 was simply put, huge amounts of fun. Following release and great word of mouth it became the "in thing". Modern Day became the timeframe people wanted after spending so long in WW2 - You can see this from the sales. Call of Duty 3 to CoD4: MW to World at War, followed by the record breaking game that was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

It was fun, addictive and easy enough to play with friends. They made the right move at the right time with the right developer.

Just Dance is arguably a hybrid genre, as is every other Dance game, with the Fitness genre.

Dance/Fitness really took off this generation.
