Forums - Sony Discussion - Naughty Dog: Ellie’s Popularity in The Last of Us “Says a lot About Whether Games can Sell With a Female Protagonist” *spoilers*

Hes responsible for Lost Odyssey and The Last Story. Tell me if his creativity got worse or only got better since leaving Final Fantasy.

Both better user review on metacritic (metacritic being highly influenced by marketing capabilities of the editor)

I didn't play the games but looks like they have better reception then modern FFs. And he does something else. Wich is never bad for creativity.

Nomura did not have a director role back then, but he did have a word to say on the table of FFVII creation.

I don't think sakaguchi would as good now if he kept doing Final Fantasy games for 10 years. It seriously kills creativity.

And FFX was awesome. Without sakaguchi.

And Scalable difficulty is always a solution, too, plus FFVII was kinda easy.

Kitase is getting old too.

Square really needs new heads. Yoshida is a good example. He did awesomely well on 2.0

I don't think that would kill his creativity, he has actually made a lot of other games outside of Final Fantasy, even then.

This is every game he's worked on since Final Fantasy.  After the first 5 entries, Final Fantasy becomes almost scarce.  Even if all he made was Final Fantasy, then he'd still be far better than most.  Final Fantasy isn't as grounded to a set of rules as a lot of other franchises are.  There are recurring themes, but just about every game has new characters, new stories, etc.

He didn't have a lot of direct roles, but still.

I know about that. I'm just saying they need fresh blood on Final Fantasy serie. How can that be a bad thing ?

Edit : And always games made by the same people prevents (even more) original and innovative works.

Because games have neeeeeever sold with a female protagonist before? o.O

Also, isn't Ellie the sidekick?

I LOVE ICELAND!

It's not necessarily a bad thing, but some people aren't to be trusted with such games.  They'll ruin them before they even have a chance.  I get what you're saying, though. :)

For a good example, remember Bahamut lagoon ?

Square hired a lot of new employees, and they told them : "Make a game, together as freshblood, so that you can find your way here"

It was directed by Motomu Toriyama, that arrived in square in '94. The game was out in '96.

Ellie is the reason of the game. The reason of joel too.

She's not the protagonist but the central character. Way more important.

I see.

Whoever wrote that headline should be fired. He writes for playstationlifestyle.com, and can't even get the role of a character right in a PS3 flagship game, lol.

Her role and purpose ends up being a surprise. Almost like a coming of age and then you realize she is what the game is all about. Thats all I will say because it sounds like you have not played this amazing game.
