He'll do a great job.

As I read elsewhere - it'll be interesting to hear what the Tumblr Fangirls think. Especially the "I heart Doctor Who, but Matt Smith isn't as hawt as David Tennant" faction.

Predictable, but interesting.

Who is much, much more than just Tennant & Tumblr Fangirls - and will be around long, long after they've departed. With an actor of Capaldi's range - from unbelievably comic to heart wrenchingly tragic - I feel we could be heading back to a Barry Letts inspired golden age - my personal favorite show runner - if the darker undertones that Moffat has slowly been introducing over the last couple of seasons are any indication.

Yay.

I really dismissed David Tenat as a 'pretty boy' when he started.  I thought, on noes! they chose a good looking actor of a quality one - it's like American TV.  But he won me over, and I would put him as one of my favorites.

The first Doctor looked like a Grandpa.  I like Matt Smith as the Doctor, I hear this last season is the best.  But I wouldn't call him sexy. (Sorry Matt - I'll still buy you a pint.)

Wait, what happened to the guy they showed at the end of the last season? I'm confused.

Is he just for the special, then?

EDIT: Yeah! They introuced John Hurt as "The Doctor."

You mean mega star John Hurt ;) - thats just a special where he is the Doctor... a bit like the old Two Doctors/Five Doctors episodes from way back.

I'm glad they have gone for an older guy, hopefully we can get back to the more serious Ecclestone episodes. I liked Matt Smith, but its all got a little too teenagey.

Hrm, all right then.

Well! Either way, I ike the choice. Having an older Doctor can lead to some nice somber undertones that really didn't work well with Matt Smith. I liked Moffat's darkness at times, but I could never take it seriously.

@conegamer

in the US i would say dr who is pretty none existent outside of nerd culture. i've always known the name but until i started watching it on netflix earlier this year i had no idea what it was. even now i have no friends i can talk to about it.

i was at a trivia night once and out of twelve teams i was the only person to get the dr who question right. my team almost veto'd me as being "full of shit" when i gave them the right answer even. :(

This!

Sorry for the bump but I did a search for Doctor Who because I was wondering if Matt Smith was a respectable follow up. I just watched the last episode with David Tennet on Netflix. Got to say I like Eccelston but I think he got shafted with character development/story archs with only being around for a short time. Tennet had a superb story (I think his Doctor/Donna clone will be a wife beater) and character development and his follow up has huge shoes to fill

He is an absolutely excellent actor and I think he'll make a perfect Doctor. I'm pretty excited to see the new Dr. Who with him in it.

Never heard of him but love Doctor Who so we'll see what he is like whenever the new episodes come out.

I still think of this guy when i hear Doctor Who though it's been a few years since he was the doctor. I wish the BBC did more quality shows like they used to. We have to pay for it through TV license so we should expect more and better programmes

Well, be happy with what you have, in the USA that cut some funding (that just help to secure finding, didn't realy do much money wise.), so now 'The Learning Chanel' instead of teaching you has "Honey Boo Boo" and the 'History' channel now has aliens and ghost chasers all the time.

This what a total 'free market' makes for entertainment.

Out of curiosity, how big is Doctor Who outside of the UK? I could never quite figure out how much of an impact the BBC and shows like this and Top Gear, for example, have.

Doctor who is big with my community.  Everybody knows about, even if they don't watch it.

But I do live in a city with the highest percentage of college graduates.  So my results my be scewed.

One of my friends annouced the other day he wants to watch them ALL.  I remembed him that it has been on for nearly 50 years and some of the originals don't exist anymore.  Didn't stop him.
