Nintendo Says That Bringing Their Games To Smartphones Etc Decreases Brand Value

Nintendo appears to be of the firm opinion that bringing its established franchises to both smartphones and tablets would ultimately decrease the overall value of the brand. Nintendo says that it is confident that sales performance of the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are steadily improving. The company also believes that you can not get the true feel of Mario or a similar title on your smartphone and tablet device.

“Performance is temporarily getting better, you can’t get a true feel for Mario on smartphone or tablet, and this would also lead to a decrease in brand value over the long term.”

Why not release an accessory then? A case that turns the iPhone into a Gamepad.

"You can’t get a true feel for Mario on smartphone or tablet"tablet

Once upon a time — year ending March 31, 2009, to be precise — Nintendo managed to post a profit of 555.2 billion yen. Those days feel like a lifetime away now, what with the Wii passing into memory and its successor — the Wii U — struggling to sell in meaningful quantities.

Given Nintendo's current position compared to where it was a couple of years ago, its unsurprising that many " experts" are calling for the company to abandon its hardware-focused approach and bring its impressive portfolio of titles to smartphones and tablets, arguably the "" at present.industrygrowth sector

One Japanese analyst has even gone as far as to predict that if Nintendo was to take such action, it would see its profits increase "2 or 3 times" over.

However, Nintendo continues to resist such claims, and in response has said:

Performance is temporarily getting better, you can’t get a true feel for Mario on smartphone or tablet, and this would also lead to a decrease in brand value over the long term.

We certainly agree there — one of the biggest issues with touchscreen-only devices is a lack of precise control; we simply can't imagine playing a Mario title on a device which lacks physical inputs. Nintendo would have to simplify the controls, which will surely result in a more shallow experience overall.

Whatever your perspective on this matter, it's a debate which is set to run and run until Nintendo can turn its fortunes around or the mobile sector collapses.

I agree. Smartphones are just not the way i want to play games. Capcom, Square Enix, and EA are just ruining their series.

I agree, if they want to sell their games in the phone/tablet market, they need to do it dirty cheap because that is what the customers are used to. And later it would be very hard to justify the price in their consoles.

The quality of the games could also suffer, because you cannot spend a lot of time in development cause the games are sold cheap and is hard to recover the investment.

Another post?

I agree, totally. Plus, smartphones and the like were suppose to put the final nail in Ninty's coffin, at least so far as handheld gaming is concerned. So I say screw smartphone and Ipad gaming.

I love My Wii U, and the potential it brings to gaming.

Well, that's stating the obvious.

It's true. Nintendo really seems to get joy out of doing that.

haha I see. Its odd how angry birds can originate on cell phones, is now getting royalties out the ass from licensing and is second to Nintendo own franchises (in the west) on the 3DS and will top all software in terms of 3rd party titles for the Wii U and 3DS again with angry birds star wars. Seems like a lot of brand expansion on their part.

I say if they're thinking of doing something 3rd party (which I doubt), they should try with something like this:

Both are big brands, so I think they would be able to safely test the waters with something that is not strictly their franchise.
