Forums - Gaming - Will new consoles be outshined by price cuts, Grand Theft Auto V, and Pokemon and Y in christmas time?

Probably not. The hardcore will buy the consoles for the first few months either way. It won't be until January or February where sales could potentially slow down, but by that point the hype and attention for the games you listed will have died down. The new consoles could very well see a slow down, but I doubt it will be due to the games you mentioned.

The 3DS, Vita, and Wii U have all had stints when they were selling worse than their predecessors. That looks to be the norm for this generation.

Also, it's possible that extending the 360 and PS3 lifetimes is a business strategy. If Sony and Microsoft think they've sold a critical mass with preorders to keep the systems alive, they might be trying to cool off their next gen system sales. It's likely they are taking losses on hardware, and cooling off their hardware sales means they won't be as deeply in the red. Remember, they're both making money off their previous generation models.

i dont think their will be any price cuts. the PS3 and the 360 are probably making huge profits per sale. the 360 to an even larger extent. if the PS4 and X1 are making a loss per unit the sales of the PS3 and 360 are probably offsetting the losses made. if there will be a price cut i only see it happening to the 360. not the ps3

I definitely think current gen sales and Wii U sales to outperform px14 gen consoles this holiday season...

next holiday season I think that whatever next gen is doing better might help boost the current px360 sales appropriately

I kind of agree, for me the most exciting games being released in the final few months of the year are Total War: Rome II and Grand Theft Auto V.

However, they are both coming out in September, so I should in theory be done with them 2 months later

As for the price cuts, I don't think that dirt cheap consoles are really competing with the new consoles, everyone who would be buying a next gen console already owns a current gen console. It is probably better to get the price cut out of the way this year, rather than wait until next year when you are looking for a wider audience

The one problem is that for people on the fence, they can play the majority of both launch line-ups on their current gen platforms, though of course we don't know how well they will actually run

I would never even consider BF4 on current consoles.  I mean seriously why go with 24 player 30fps MP when you can have crisper looking 64 player matches with 60fps plus all the new social features (in my case the PS4 ones) and better networking of next gen consoles?  I know there are still a lot of preorders for it but I simply would never want that version.

I wouldn't either, I am going to get it on PC as a tech-demo.... But you can see how the great graphics of BF4, AC IV and Watch_Dogs aren't quite system sellers for people sitting on the fence. Do you really want to be paying £400 for a console (once you have got a second controller or camera) and just get a graphical upgrade? For me, Assassin's Creed IV and Watch Dogs look more compelling than anything that Sony or M$ have lined up this year

I am okay with that because I know that down the line it is going to be worth it, but it is hard to say that it is for this year. Once inFamous shows up things start to look better, but even next year, I would be surprised of CoD/AC weren't cross gen.

Most of my game library is exclusives anyway.  In fact the only third party games I have hard copies of on my PS3 are Skyrim and the Batman games.  I've played plenty but resell most that aren't worthy of a permanent spot.  I'm planning on KZ, Knack, and Infamous in the first couple months of PS4 already and the Order whenever that comes because I trust the devs and loved all their games this gen (and just trust Cerny after seeing the games he's worked on).  AC4 I'm on the fence about since I never end up staying interested (bought all, sold all this gen) while BF4 will be my first game on PS4 and Watch Dogs will be on my Christmas list.  Also Destiny and the Crew are just about must buys at this point.  So next gen looks more balanced between first and third party I guess.

Why did you reply to kowen then? He didn't say anything about how they'll sell after launch.

Because Kowen stated that they'd sell out and I stated that that's nothing new. Then I explain to you what my reasoning behind that was. (Because you questioned why I said that.)

Really, it's kind of simple...

Then you knew the answer to your own question.

GTA , Pokemon wont affect new systems at all since they wll be sold out regardless.

It doesnt matter if it is unusual or not, it was a direct answer to your question.  To reiterate, no they wont affect them as they will be sold out anyway.

I don't see how Pokemon effects HOME consoles at all.  Surely a Pokemon has come out within the release window a new console before?

It ain't just GTA5 and Pokemon. All of the biggest games this year are cross-gen.

Watch Dogs, new Creed, CoD, Battlefield and the like. That will slow them down for sure. I expect the consoles to still have a good launch though.

So inFamous isn't coming out for 4-5 months after launch, so at launch you just have Killzone and Knack, the latter doesn't look that impressive and I am sure you can agree that may might be happy with CoD or Battlefield instead of Killzone.

But certainly Destiny is on current gen and the Crew might be as well... A year after launch we will likely get Killzone, Knack, Drive Club, inFamous Second Son and then games from Naughty Dog and SCE Santa Monica probably.

All I am saying, is that there is nothing actually that compelling coming later this year, the best stuff is on current gen as well

But don't worry about me, I pre-ordered my PS4 as soon as I could

Oh I'm not really disagreeing with you.  I have 3 other friends getting the BF4 bundle otherwise I would have KZ at launch instead of it.  I think many will hold back I mean no console sells more than 15m or so in its first year and I doubt these ones will do close to that.  I'm just saying that current gen versions of those games are not enough for myself or many others.  Have they shown Watch Dogs, AC4, BF4, or Destiny on current gen?  I'm guessing the differences will be pretty night and day.  Also the next gen consoles will have more stability and features online so I'm thinking that'll sell many as well as the improved controllers.  Certainly they won't be for everyone in year 1 but that's what a 10 year lifecycle is for.  I think PS4 will do significantly better even ignoring hardware and features and exclusives because those COD and BF players are going to want the cheaper console for those games.  That's PS4 by a wide margin.  You can get BF4 and a year of Plus for the same price as the X1 console on Amazon.  That's huge and that crowd of 360 owners that bought it for the cheaper multiplat entry point will swing to the cheaper option again this time whenever they decide to buy a next gen console be it year 1 or 5.

15m would still be a good first year! Neither the PS3 or 360 managed that as far as I can remember

They haven't shown any of them on previous gen (have they shown Battlefield on net gen either?)

I don't think the differences will be that big, most of the games are still running on current gen engines, the main exception being Watch_Dogs which is why that is the one that I am looking forward to the most

But I just don't think there will be a big enough margin to convince everyone to switch over
