That must be some serious accelerated ageing for a 12 year old to end up looking like a 50 year old. He'd then have to not age for the next 25 years considering his appearance in MGS2.
How is Grey Fox too young to impersonate Big Boss but Solidus isn't? I'm confused. Grey Fox is only slightly younger than Big Boss.

Are you actually debating Eli's Identity!? That is amoung the easier of the mysteries. Not mention no matter how old you get certain features of the face never change like eyes and nose. When you compare any parent and offspring those 2 facial features are the to be compared.

Father and son do not always look alike, especially when the son hasn't even reached his teens. Adult Liquid Snake didn't look like Big Boss either. Instead of comparing him to his father, why aren't you comparing him to his future self?

To answer your question, technology. Technology has advanced since the PS1/2 days. No character's(even Snake and Big Boss have updates to their facial structure.) look identical to way they did then. Kid liquid is to detailed to compare to low polo count model. It's better to compare his features to features of Big Boss in this.

Yeah I'm kind of in the same camp.
Theres a small chance of it being Solidus otherwise, I think.

Solidus could've been made to resemble Big Boss from the get-go which means they would be the exact same age. A real clone without any accelerated age-ing etc. Basically he was made for this purpose and thats the reason he looks so much like Big Boss in MGS2 contra MGS4.

Also on the whole Eli thing. I always felt Liquid looked more like his surrogate mother - Eva.
An interesting theory...but I don't see it personally. Who knows, though. Kojima has done much crazier
