Wonder how Nintendo's going to transition after all this console biz.

Maybe instead of hardware, they set up a "service" like the App store or Steam and you can only get their games through that service. Maybe.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Nintendo's been around since 1886. Well over 100 years already.

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

Are they any well known Japanese companies older than Nintendo? They must be one of the oldest for sure already.

Panasonic (Matsushita) is the closest one I can find, and they were founded in 1918, which means Nintendo pre-dates them by almost 30 years.

It's kinda crazy to think Nintendo was over 100 years old before the Super Famicom/SNES even launched!

it's sad thinking right now. imagine 100 years in the future, aside from these over-population problems/etc and shit, you have to wonder, how will Videogames be then? Miyamoto, as sad as i am while typing this, won't be alive in 100 years. neither will Iwata, Reggie, Aunoma, Bill, heck not even us guys on the forums.

Well, let me throw this out there: we're already pushing the bounds of HDTV's with only two generations, and somewhere in generations 9, 10, or 11 we will get the Virtual Reality generation. And it's looking to be sooner, not later. If Sony and Microsoft adopt cutting edge VR tech for their next consoles and Nintendo doesn't (the way HD went for a generation) they'll have lost the home console space for a whole generation.

That said, Nintendo can just float on portables all the way through a generation like that and launch their own. It all depends on what tech the future brings around, when, and how expensive it would be to adopt when it launches.

I honestly don't know if "game hardware" as in a console "box" will exist in 20 years. Probably something like a virtual reality simulation sure, but something that is piped in over the internet through a cloud service that includes cable/movies/games etc. No game console needed.

I think in 10 years from now you'll still have the standard game console model, but much like Blu-Ray/DVD dedicated players today, you'll also start to see the writing on the wall.

I'm less convinced. Technology is starting to plateau, effects before hardware. It tales a huge difference in hardware to make a noticable difference in the end product. Why would you transfer the computational aspects to a server when the computational aspects are increasingly the trivial part of the equation and it makes it more likely something will go wrong? Chances are, after gen 8 we will see games move away from traditional game controllers in favor of a Nintendo-like attitude toward interaction (Microsoft is already trying with Kinect).

Like I said, the next major step console manufacturers will aim for is virtual reality. The question is if this is twenty years or sixty.

They won't have to last another 100 months to outlive Zynga.

Don't take the 100 years comment literally. The only point he's trying to make is that Nintendo's history and philosophy will guide the company through its struggles in ways that other companies cannot.

We will still use Windows of some sort somewhere in the future. I don't care about Zynga but his statement about Nintendo remains factual. Nintendo won't be going anywhere for years. So many people chant the doom and gloom of Nintendo and their Wii U without mentioning 3DS's massive dominating success and Nintendo's, not only the billions of dollars, but Nintendo's WEALTH. Wealth and riches are totally different concepts even though Nintendo has maintained both in recent years. Still, that was a pretty bold statement though. I just can't wait until Wii U makes a comeback with all those games coming out.

one bad handheld gen would be enough to cripple Nintendo, it's their bread and butter console gaming is just the icing on the cake

NINJA PLEASE!!!!

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."
