Personally I think game covers do matter, now its not like a badass cover is gonna make a terrible game sell millions of copies, but if your in a store and a cover catches your eye and you pick it up to look at it, right there something as simple at the cover sold that copy of the game.  Also yes there are some great games that have bad covers like the MGS cover for North America.  It is so plain, it spells MGS in red letters with a plain white background.  I think if it would have had a better cover then more people would have looked into it, because back then not everyone knew what MGS was.  Again its not gonna boost the sales of MGS by millions, but it would still help.  Honestly when I was younger I had no idea what Kingdom Hearts was, but I saw the cover of the game and that made me pick it up and read the back and I decided to try it and I'm so happy I did.  So what do you guys think, and also what are some of your favorite game covers, here are mine:

I always do a research on every game before buying it. I never buy a game just because it has a cool cover.  But a lot of people do, unfortunately. One of the main reasons Ico didn't sell so well, was because of its horrible dumb-ass cover.

it stopped mattering for me when my weekend sleepover was ruined by a game rental decision based on a game cover. That sleep over was boring as hell.

Sure, I good cover will make me more likely to pick it up. But I usually ask others or look it up before playing if I don't know about the game already.

Yep, and also on teh contrary I was put off by some covers. Like the Infamous ones, I hear good things about them but I definitely hate the covers xD.

I suppose box art matters but i like to see videos and reviews of games to completely sell me to buy a game.

Well, I would never have had some interest for Dragon Quest VIII without the cover, and it made me buy a bunch of JRPGs afterward. So I think it does matter.

Plus it's nice for the collection to look awesome

I don't go around buying random games, I always do at least a little bit of research. That said, if I did do any judgement based on covers, I probably wouldn't buy games with good covers. Instead, I'd ignore games with bad covers.
