Forums - Sony - Looking for help deciding which PSP model is best to buy at this point

Which model?

1000 5 10.20%

2000 8 16.33%

3000 22 44.90%

E1000 4 8.16%

Go/See results 10 20.41%

Total:49

I have a 2000 and Ive had no problems with it. So, I would say to do it with that price really.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I've had the 3000 model for almost 4 years and no problems so far

The PSP-3000 is the best if you want to play UMDs. Though if you want something completely hackable then you should go with the 1000. If not then the 3000 improves on everything from it and is by far the best model.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I thought the last option of the poll was for PSP Go lol.

If you can mod, then PSP Go is the ABSOLUTE BEST console EVER created! Period! (even though I ended it with an 'exclamation mark'

It is and it isn't.

It is because it has the best screen out of all, it's very ergonomic, and it has plenty of built-on memory.

it isn't because the battery is built-in, and unless you manage your charge well, it doesn't last all that much. I got an extended life battery for my 3000 - I can run it for ~12 hours... 2nd brightness settings, headphones, games from memcard, power saving plugins.

What's ghosting? Is that like a after burnin? If so, I have never experienced that on my PSP 2000. Who want's to get use to scan lines?

Anybody who wants a much better screen.

Ghosting is a type of motion blur, and in really bad cases (such as, scenes moving fast), you'll see both motion blur, and severe color darkening.

Greatly exaggarated screen issues compared to the simply horrible ghosting on the 2000, plus the 3000 has far, far, better color. I've had both, using my 3000 as we speak.

To answer your questions:

The better screen is on the 3000. Less ghosting, better color. Con is that you sometimes see visible scanlines, to which you get used quickly.

The longer battery life is on the 2000, thanks to a worse screen.

Analog nub is the same.

UMD's run the same.

The E1000 has a screen that has colors like the 2000, but it doesn't ghost like crazy like the 2000. If you want new - it ain't bad. Cons are that the battery is not replaceable, and the battery sensor is imprecise, giving you measures only in battery bars rather than in percentages and estimate of how much longer it can run. Mono sound unless you go for headphones, no physical brightness button - you gotta change in XMB, which can't be done ingame.

My suggestion is that you get the 3000, and get LCFW on it. That is, custom firmware side-by-side with sony's firmware. It is executed, and once you turn your PSP off, you are back to sony's firmware. It gives you the advantages of:

1) You can rip your UMD to PC and play it from memory card - faster loading in games, longer battery life from lack of a need to run the UMD drive.

2) You can play any PS1 game you have in your actual library. Rip to PC, convert for PSP, play.

3) You can get plugins that increase your battery life. Though that involves a little bit of work with the CFW.

That seems to cover it. Feel free to ask me anything, I've been messing with PSP's for two years now, since it's my go-to device for many things atm.

Thanks for an extremely interesting reply.  I didn't realise both the 2000 & 3000 had both positive and negative screen issues.  I'm not quite sure I understand what ghosting is yet, but you believe that it's far worse than the scan lines of the 3000?  I must admit, I think scan lines would bother me, so I'll have to have a think about which I'd dislike more.

You helped me rule out E1000 though.  Between the lack of wifi combined with the not replacable battery & mono sound, I think that one's out :P

I have 2000 and I have no complaints about it.

In my belief, it is. However, there are games in which it's very noticeable, in others - barely at all. In 3D games for example, you'll see it much less than in 2D ones. The 2000 doesn't have a "bad" screen - if somebody handed you one and asked you for your opinion, I'm sure you'd like it. The 3000 just wins out in my eyes, since I consider ghosting to be a much worse issue (plus, more vibrant color FTW). If I had my 2000, I'd give you a demonstration, but so far, google is your best mate.

3000 has a more colorful screen, but other than that it's very similar to the 3000 and 2000. 1000 is good for homebrew. There is no reason to consider the e-1000.
