Forums - Microsoft - Killer Instinct pricing strategy to be announced at gamescom

VideoGamer

Killer Instinct's pricing strategy will be announced at gamescom next month, Microsoft Studios' Kenn Lobb has told GameSpot.

"We're going to announce the exact pricing strategy when we get to gamescom," said Lobb, before explaining why the game will be released in an unconventional manner.

"The idea was how do I build a fighting game that the fighting game community can just go buy," explained Lobb. "They get the whole game. We'll obviously have more characters that come out over time."

At the same time, the game had to have no barrier of entry for those who aren't currently sold on fighting games.

"We're going to take Jago, you can say he's a demo – it's not a free to play game," insisted Lobb.

"Jago is a demo where you have everything. What's free is you have Jago, Jago's practice mode, you can fight against any AI character," Lobb explained. "More importantly, you're in the one shard of the online gaming community, so you can take your Jago out and fight against anybody – even if it's a character that you don't have."

The demo gives players the ability to pick and choose how they expand the character roster, says Lobb.

"Let's say you didn't want to buy everything and you decide you kind of like Glacius. "You can just buy Glacius."

Killer Instinct will be available alongside Xbox One in November.

I'd rather pick up the full game for 60 right out of the gate. Anyway I hope MS shows a good amount of stuff at Gamescom.

If you can grind your way to buying characters, itll go a long way with fans.

If you just buy your few favourite characters for like $15-$20, and don't see yourself using the others, then that also is a good value proposition.

Either way, as someone who is used to F2P on tablets, this has to be approached delicately.....its like introducing the internet to a senior in the 90's :P

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Its gonna be fucked up if they only release a digital version of the game, gonna show gamers what direction MS is going with this generation.

You mean how the world is going digital and MS is merely following suit. Nevermind how most of X1s hyped games are retail based. And Sony pushing indie made games HEAVILY this gen.......you may have missed the memo that those would all be digital only as well.

If they have a full version available everything will be fine (which seems to be the case). I'd have a problem with being "forced" to buy every character one at a time without any package deal options.

Ofc indie games are gonna be digital what do you expect, they have no choice...Ofc not all of Microsoft's launch games are gonna be digital only, they will start with one and slowly start with more and more.  We are nowhere close to going all digital, not even close to half of software sales come from digital and for Microsoft to release one of their big launch titles as a digital only title shows they will try to push digital down our throats throughout the next generation wether you like it or not.  Sony has already said phyisical media will remain their primary source of software distribution.

Physical media is clearly MS's choice as well, and you don't have to hearn a PR statement to know this. Its called experimentation, and until gamescom, best leave your wild predictions at the door until then

I find that to be a bad idea as Killer Instinct is pretty new after being out of the gaming world for so long, so it's hard to tell which character each gamer will actually enjoy and which best suits their skills.  Eventually, gamers will likely need to buy all the characters to test it out and make sure they didn't miss out on a potential good character for them to play.

I'm an advid Street Fighter gamer and everybody knows that each generation of SF all plays differently.  Sure Ryu has the same moves but doesn't mean that he's the same every time.  As well, I found that Akuma is my main fighter now, but that's only after I've played and tested every other character.
