Forums - Politics - Are Christian American Extremist the reason it took Same sex marriage so long to be legalized in the U.S?

I blame politicians pretending they are against gay marriage to appeal to close minded voters.

I'm looking at you democrats.

I am Christian and I have no problem with same sex marriages.

One of the main thrusts of the Gospel was against the Conservatives/Farisees attacking the followers of Jesus for not following the law and tradition. Jesus responded by saying the law was created for the benefit of humanity, and not humanity created to benefit the law.

When I see speech against same-sex marriage, I see the head of conservatism, not people who are following Christianity.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Lots of people care. Just because your view is now politically dominant does not make those people who hold that homosexuality is abhorrent 'extremists', especially as it is the majority view worldwide and has been the only viewpoint for much of recorded history. The liberal elite in our society have taken the word 'extremist' and redefined it as anything standing in the way of their dismantling the fundamental structures upon which our society is built.

There are a lot of people who feel that our structures need to be torn down and rebuilt but there are also many cases where those structures are allowed to remain standing but that they simply must be made to stand alongside new structures. Typically, when someone I've heard mentions Christian Extremists they are referring to the ones who trot out ridiculous hate speech and fear mongering. Like the ones who will try to convince people that we have natural disasters because people are supporting gays, a restaurant had an infestation because they said they believe in same-sex marriage, or that allowing same-sex marriage at all will result in the apocalypse occurring because whatever invisible deity they've chosen does not like that at all. There are not only people who spread that garbage but people who completely believe it. Simply disagreeing with someone is one thing. When you disagree with someone and then demand that that person be treated like a second class citizen because you disagree and that if people don't follow you on that then EVERYONE gets punished.... I'd call that its own form of extreme.

THIS!

It would make everything so much easier...

Well liberals aren't exactly known for sticking around.  Look at the black community in America and its decline over the past 60 years.  Cities and stated literally falling part under liberal leadership.

I'm not saying the same will happen with the gay community but liberals track record of exploiting the poor for their elitist goals is not a good sign.

Remember the purpose of liberalism is too fundamentally change something even if there isn't a reason too.  The great liberal lion himself Kennedy once said the liberal dreams of a world that is yet to be, and he is correct that is what liberals do.  So once they have fundamentally changed something it's on to the next fundamental change.

Persoanlly I think liberals should go after 2+2 next it has been equaling 4 for forever, it's time for fundamental change to come to 2+2.

When one holds a hypothesis, the hypothesis is held until it is disproved. Our society has held several hypotheses for a long time. Now we reject several hypotheses, not because they are disproved, but rather because we have not proven them. Note that morals cannot be proven - just as scientific theories are never proven, but rather, those that last have simply never been disproved. I fear we have begun a trend - a trend of destroying all moral hypotheses, to be replaced by power struggles, with the law on the side of all groups who have historically been 'oppressed' (which is to say, that the force of moral hypotheses was against them). In this way the law is expediting the process of disestablishing all moral hypotheses that once ruled our society. Such unfounded hypotheses include property rights, marriage, differences between genders, sexual ethics, modesty as a virtue, self-control as a virtue, belief without perfect evidence (note that even to affirm the existence of others involves such belief), respect for elders, prohibitions of murder, rape, incest, bestiality, prostitution (already nearly legal in the form of pornography and being a pornography worker), polygamy (which will soon work its way through society), and the like. None of these morals or moral prohibitions will escape the scrutiny of the new moralists.

A new society will be formed, but first the old must be destroyed. Nobody builds a house without first knocking down the old one which is in the way. Every hypothesis which serves as a base to our society - down even to murder - must be re-examined, because we refuse to hold those hypotheses which are handed down to us without 'logical' examination.

Most christian americans are extremist compared to the rest of the world.

I never saw a non american bragging about being christian on twitter by the way.

And from what I read in the bible, being christian is about humility >_>

But well, France just got same sex marriage and belgium had it 10 years ago, and we are both mostle atheist.

It's not about religion, it's about conservatism. See the difference between social measure in belgium(or better, sweden) and America (or france) and you will understand.

I can think of no other reason. We are a country based on freedom of everything, yet this was a huge fight for years!

Just let people do what they want. Who cares? Except for a certain group of Americans who think they are judge and jury and can do what they want. Looky, looky! Americans showed them what is up yet again!

The reason homosexuality has been banned is because it is forbidden explicitly, and in different places in the Bible. It is also forbidden in the Koran and Hindu religions. It has been banned for thousands of years as religious societies grew and prospered, Britain, U.S. Now religion has been removed from the state in North America and Europe. Societies without religion are dying. They  have a birth rate below replacement. So religious societies live, and those without die. In two hundred years there will be no Western society. In France, Britain, and the rest of Europe Muslims are an increasing minority. In time they will be the majority. So it is in the final analsys God who lets disobedient societies perish. And ironically it is the gay rights movement that is implementing His punishment. As gay activists push for recognition the traditional family has become fatally ill, unable to reproduce (those in favor of gay rights are also in favor of the family destroying no fault divorce, abortion, pornography, etc). So enjoy your so called equality. As you destroy your own society the god fearing Muslims will take it's place. Or as Jesus so elequantly said: Blessed are the meek (Muslims, as opposed to arrogant, faithless atheists) for they shall inherit the world.

BTW, can anyone who knows gay people who have already married or are considering to do so tell me what their actual motives for marrying are? Because I wonder if it's mainly for rational/economic reasons, or rather because they like the archaic, nowadays often kitschy ritual?

I can say from  anything personally, but the same sex couples that I know that married say:

They want their kids to have married parents,

They want to be one legal family - some change their names, some do not (a little less than opposite sex marriages),

They want to be able to put the other person on their health insurance,

They don't want to be taxed more than they should,

They want to be able to visit each other in the hospital when they are sick,

They want to live together and because they are from different countries, they can't other in without a marriage visa,

But mostly, they are in love and are committed to one another and want to celebrate it with their friends and family.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Nice job taking it to another extreme. You can't solve extremes with other extremes.

OT: I would say partially. The other reason is because government works slowly. And the US' government works even slower.
