Forums - Sony - 16GB Vita Memory Card for $29.99 - What can we predict from this?

I would love to see a permanent price decrease on those memory cards. The current prices are insulting.

being a vita owner myself, it needs cheaper memory cards. period.

Honestly, I don't think anything can save the vita. It has the games, it has a great price, the psp was very successful, yet it's not doing so well. It might be the perception of the vita, but at this point, I really just don't know.

I'm not sure it needs saving.  People said the same thing about the PS3 at this point in its lifecycle.

Ya but the PS3 didn't have even close to the amount of quality software that the vita currently has, also the vita currently has a really great price while the ps3 was still way over priced.

this with the PS3 was it was never over priced. it was always just expensive.

I think that's more of an opinion based on what you viewed the ps3 as, if you viewed it as a gaming machine it was definitely overpriced(200 bucks more than the 360 with less games, that played worse on the ps3, and the online capabilities were no where near as great as live), but if you added in the bluray, then ya, it was just expensive.  But at that time, not everyone had HD tv's so during that time I would say it was overpriced for most, but with people who could actually use the bluray then sure, it was just expensive.

your post is the compleate oposit of the truth lol

as a gaming machine it was Expensive (not overpriced as what was in it was almost £1000 worth. £429 was expensive for a games machine)

As  gaming/blu ray player in 2006 it was cheap. (a blu-ray drive alone cost Sony $350 and cost the consumer £899)

at no point was the PS3 overpriced as no matter what you got it for it was worth alot more. it was just always expenive.

I said 2 things

1) because of the GAMES it was overpriced because the games played better on the 360, if you used it for a gaming machine only

2) If you used it for games AND bluray it was expensive, 600 dollars is a lot of money everywhere, if you think 600 bucks is NOT expensive then you must be a very fortunate individual.

So, idk what you are talking about because both things I said were 100% true lol.

Absolutely nothing! Vita was never hurt by card prices. It is a sour theory postulated by those who didn't understand the system. Vita needs games and a price drop. Not a cheaper memory card.

Also, at 29.99, this means that also BestBuy was taking in huge margins on those cards, not just sony.

Not neccessarily.  Clearance prices are usually below cost.

Big box retailers like best buy view the amount of space being taken up in a store as a cost.  So, if a product isnt selling well, they view it as costing them money by just sitting there because they could put something else there that could sell.  Retailers will then put the product on clearance at below cost to clear up the space so that they can put something else there and stop losing money.

When I worked at best buy, one of the most annoying things i had to do was look at these 'at risk' products and make sure we made an effort to sell them before they went on clearance.  Unfortunately, products that were at risk didnt sell for a reason, as they were mostly stupid or very overpriced...

30$ IS quite a huge amount, I agree, but for something that doesn't take up a lot of room, they could've sold in bulk to another company instead. I'd say it's probably within a good percentage of cost, either that, or sony has stopped production on 16gbs completely. Point is, I don't see what else they could fit there. The cards are literally a quarter of an eighth of an inch thick, held in place on a piece of cardboard.

Best buy doesnt think in terms of what could replace the space, only that the item in that space isnt selling so it needs to go.  They hand out reports of how much money having that item on the shelf is costing them, it is really dumb.

Honestly, I havent worked at best buy for years, but if the vita cards are anything like the other memory cards best buy carries, than the margin is generally around 20%.  At most, the margin is probably around $20 so best buy is probably eating at least $10 on the clearance price.

I could see that.

I could also see a discounted price offered on larger models to offset said loss somewhat. Sony has almost confirmed that they and MS subsidize price drops.

Yeah, generally any change to the msrp is eaten by the manufacturer, not the retailer.  Clearance is different though as that is the retailer deciding not to carry the product anymore and not being able to dump it quick enough so they have to eat that cost themselves.

wow didnt know they were that high, you can get regular sd cards that size for a lot less. They should be a little more open like Nintendo and allow ppl to use whatever storage option they want.

64GB incoming?

Drop the system to 200. The 32Gb to 50. Then people will find the price reasonable.
