It relates to account. Being in the "red" means you're losing money, "black" means you're profitable.

There was a time when most retailers were in the red until "black friday". This was due to the friday after thanksgiving, when everyone is off and the classic/official start of holiday shopping begins. So massive amounts of customers would (and still do) flood retail channels on that friday buying so much shit that it would cause all retailers to go into the black... i.e. become profitable for the year.

Its purely retail lingo that has become adopted by mainstream US marketing.
