I know someone must've brought it up, however, I was just wondering if people figured out it was shipped,sold to consumer, or what is going on with that whole situation.

Microsoft reported 10.4 million units sold at GDC 2006 and 17.7 and GDC 2007, making their yearly totals 7.3million.

Sony reported 8.8million units sold in 2007, meaning they outsold the Xbox360 by 1.5million, if this is correct.

I was under the impression that the Xbox360 had outsold the PS3 in 2007, and VGchartz reflects that(I think.)

So whats the deal with that? Even if thats shipped versus sold, I dont think the PS3 has 1.5million or more consoles just sitting on store shelves do they?

In Jan 07, there were ~2m X360s sitting on the shelfs waiting to be sold. (Microsoft channel stuffed). Add 2m to 7.3m and you get a total max sales for the year of 9.3m

so Microsoft could have sold more than Sony which this site reflects.

360:
Jan 1, 2007 ~ 7,959,854 units sold.
Jan 1, 2008 ~ 16,116,509 units sold.
Difference ~ 8,156,655 units sold in 2007.

PS3:
Jan 1, 2007 ~ 1,232,643 units sold.
Jan 1, 2008 ~ 8,892,220 units sold.
Difference ~ 7,659,577 units sold in 2007.

So, 360 > PS3 in units sold to end users.

Also, you might be thinking of the people who said the PS3 in its' first year outsold the 360's first year, which is correct.

So do you all think that Sony just shipped 1.5 million more consoles, but Microsoft just had those units in stores already?

Basically, by VGChartz estimates, the Xbox360 had almost a million consoles sitting on shelves WW, and sold every last one of them? Yet Sony shipped 8.8 million consoles in 2007, adding to those left on shelves after Christmas, 05, and only sold 7.6 million?

I think the PS3 sold out many places this winter, how is that possible? That would atleast mean that every store would be heavily overstocked, and I know many stores around my area were not.

Something isnt adding up.

At the end of 2006 there were a ton of 360's sitting on shelves and very few if any PS3's. Think about it, MS said they shipped 10.4m units by Jan 1 2007, yet all numbers from all accounting places put the actual sold number to about 8m sold at most. So that means they had 2.5m units sitting around the world. Then they only shipped another 6m, or so, units in 2007.

At the end of 2007 both had anywhere from 1m to 2m units sitting on shelves or in transit.

You can easily see this if you look at their latest quarterly statements. VGC is pretty accurate. 100% perfect, no, but, as close as anyone else.

Basically it breaks down to this.

PS3's first in on the market (2007) was better than 360's first year on the market (2006).

360's 2007 was better than PS3's 2007.

But, statistically speaking regardless of whom is slightly above whom, they are tied for 2007 at 8m units sold.

I think the difference also might come from the Europe launch. Coming from 06-07 the PS3 wasn't in Europe, and therefore didnt have PS3's sitting on those shelves.

Thats why they were able to ship so much more in 07, to fill up shelves in Europe. That makes sense now, but I still doubt that the 360 outsold the PS3 by any more than 100,000 or so. Every PS3 shipped before Summer (60gb,20gb) are gone from US and Europe, besides a few select stores.

Ill settle with both consoles being at 8,000,000. That seems reasonable.
