Forums - Gaming - Hideo Kojima is staggered by the quality of GTA V

Late 7th generation gems in GTA V and The Last of Us have set new benchmarks for 8th generation developers to lift their game and deliver quality games that offer great game play along with quality graphics.

This makes zero sense. I think you're just angry that Sony took the crown and expanded the gaming industry to almost double the capacity Nintendo and sega created.

Of course they expanded and this is why even on this huge market that Sony build the Japanese developers failed to find success, your answer truly make perfect sense :)

Look at the numbers, they don't lie. The perception of videogames also changed as well.

GTA5 looks phenomenal. RDR was a masterpiece and GTA5 could potentially be in the same class.

Kojima is an honorable man to recognize this. I love how he is emphazising the freedom aspect in gameplay.

Personally I am even more excited for MGS5 than GTA5, but it's so nice to see Kojima show his respect in this way. Lovely behaviour, and says a lot about the wonderful Japanese culture.

Definitely. The Witcher has challenged Bioware to pump out better games. Competition is good and next gen is looking so bright.

I don't blame him. I was completely blown away by the sheer number of activities that are going to be available in the game. Truly gives another meaning to the word "sandbox."

The problem with Sony is quite simple, Nintendo was for many generation driving force in Japanese development, they were harsh and unforgiving, but they forced the industry to progress, then Sony became new force but their only success was role of an Anti-Nintendo, the publishers became certain under Sony that they control the platform holder and success of Playstation depend on them they became lazy.

Nintendo on the other hand in order to survive forced themselves to play safe and to find new opportunities because the original market went to Sony, they supported platform mostly of their own with little external support.

The truth is for Sony was not important who provide the content, and so the entire industry lack of creative force lead to stagnation and then downfall.

Now they are no longer leaders but mere emulators they try to emulate western model with hardly any understanding from their own market, and this is why for example PS3 saw only two million sellers, pathetic compared to any previous generations.

lol and nintendo who is bringing out games that look and play basically the same as they did from their inception over 2 decades ago isn't experiencing in your opinion any lack of creative force or stagnation?

I think GTA 5 has taken the crown for gameplay this gen so far as it seems. Last of Us and Super Mario Galaxy are next. The GOTY is going to be tough to choose as it seems.

I still need to play Bioshock Infinite and the rest of The Last of Us, but I very much doubt GTA5 will be a candidate GOTY for me, GTA's never really worked for me.

As far as critics  awards go TLOU and GTA5 should be in close contention.

i've played Bioshock and TLOU has a much greater chance imho, even though Bioshock was quite impressive. GTA V crept up behind us with the gameplay. Never knew a open world game could be that deep in gameplay advantages. Seems like its going to be a long and deep game with a wide variety of alternatives. You have your spectrum of alternatives, your personalities, and the vast world thats multiple times the size of San Andreas. Makes me want to get Red Dead Redemption and go to work. Heh

Bioshock has great story but the actual shooting mechanics have always been a bit dull to me.  I was surprised by how uncinematic LoU was gameplay wise after playing Uncharted.  There really weren't very many set pieces and on Survivor the game was brutal and I was always running out of ammo and supplies to make health packs.  The fact that neither of them had regenerating health was so refreshing (I also loved R3 when it came out cause of this).  Health packs make everything so much more suspenseful and immersive.

What's the big deal with GTAV? I mean it looks a lot like San Andreas for PS2 with ocean exploration being added (which I bet is pretty limited) So it's beyond me what surprised Kojima so much LOL what did he expect?

Watch the video and pay close attention. His game is extremely limited compared.

Kojima's tweets are usually self-depreciating, but I do disagree with him. GTAV will be huge and score very well, but I still do not care at all about it.

Kojima is a drama queen . Needs to stop complaining and focus on making games that doesn't have long boring cutscenes.. i loved his old MGS titles but MGS4 was boring in the cutscenes areas . MGS5 looks promising and can't wait to play. In saying that i would rather play Mgs games then GTS games.

Kojima is a movie director by profession who makes videogames. What do you expect from him?
