Forums - Gaming - “Certain” AAA IP Needs 10 Million Copies to Break Even says

anthony64641 said:

Former Epic lead game designer Cliff Bleszinski, has stated on Twitter that a new IP introduced at E3 this year need 10 million to break even. Get the full quote below.

Here is what Cliffy B had to say on Twitter:

At e3 I overheard that a certain AAA new IP needs to sell 10 million copies…to break even. No I’m not saying which one. You can guess. ”

Meanwhile, Nintendo says Fire Emblem on Wii U would need 700K to be worthwhile. And people say Nintendo is ‘out of touch’ with the gaming industry?

Any guesses on new IP guys?

Oh, he OVERHEARD that a new IP needs to sell that many. That's 100% reliable, no way anyone can assume he's full of shit! (again)

it's obviously The Wonderful 101

Cliff B just underlined the biggest problem in the industry.

"Unrealistic expectations"

10M just to break even, is overkill.

I agree especially if it became the norm or was a unknown first party game , but if it Is a unique multiplatform game like Destiny with Activision paying out for a 10 year deal and Destiny being treated as a ongoing game with development to continue for many years after the game goes retail it can be understod because of all those factors.

Still you touched on a sore point , like tomb raider where you have a series that historicaly sells around 2-3 mill  per game and they expect a game that is a second time reboot  to sell 5 miilll at launch it's just silly and makes it seem like they didn't have great sales and profit when they did  , just greedy.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

According to...? This isn't a regular new IP...What did Halo sell, on a single...badly performing platform?

Halo is an established franchise...Destiny...well we have yet to find out that games destiny!!!

He's talking about the original Halo, which was not an established franchise back in 2001.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

You guys actually think Destiny will sell 10 million? Do you know how hard it is for a game to sell 10 million copies? It is not like it happens on a monthly basis.

It will easily sell 10m. It will be on at least 4 platforms and it's made by Bungie and advertised by Activision (CoD says hello )

Wishful thinking...but miracles do happen!!!

2.5m per platform is really not wishful thinking. A Naughty Dog new IP can match their best selling titles, why can't Bungie's new IP match their best selling titles? It will, I'm sure of it. As long as there are no unexpected problems.

Destiny will probably do 10 million on ps360 alone I don't know what this guy is talking about maybe he thinks the ps360 are like the wii and will suddenly die when their successors arrive on the market, it's a bungie/activision game and they have huge plans for it according to their wiki page

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

That is way too much, they need to be smarter and not spend so much money.

They do realize that this is like having a budget of around 600 million. Just to break even. So they would need a lot more to make it worthwhile. 60 times 10 million.

wrong, the budget would be 100 million. the devs don't sell the games to stores for $60. even if they sell for $30, only part of that (10 to 15) is actual profit.

Watchdogs? The Division?

Destiny seems like perfect candidate...tbh, I don't see it having too much trouble selling that much. Still crazy though.
