Forums - Nintendo - ZombiU Was "Not Even Close" to Profitable, No Plans for a Sequel

It's easy to say in hindsight that the game wouldn't become a success.

But at the time everybody thought it would sell fairly well. 1-1.5 million was probably a reasonable target lifetime (some copies at discount) and upside was +2 million.

Probably it cost $20 million. All AAA games cost at least $20 million. That requires 1 million copies at full price to break even.

Agree with you but ZombiU is an AAA game? right...

and i don't think $20m comes close, any AAA costs at least three times that

A $20 million budget is still considered AAA. It's in range of "low budget AAA game" category, but it's still AAA.

Well of course it wasn't! WHY DON'T PEOPLE GET IT! MATURE GAMES DON'T SELL ON NINTENDO! LEAVE THAT TO SONY AND MS! NINTENDO DON'T CARE ABOUT THOSE KINDS OF GAMES! Why don't they understand? Games like this sell well on Playstation or Xbox. Nintendo's kiddy outlook isn't an insult but this is!

So, Resident Evil on the Wii?

Totally different story. Should have exempted RE and MG. I'm talking about those really gritty FPS like CoD or GOW.

The game has a metacritic average of 77. Not exactly AAA.

Metacritic has nothing to do with AAA status.

It sounds like Ubisoft was thinking the Wii U would be much more of a hit than it turned out to be.  Even if the attach rate for Zombi U went down with more console sales, which is what usually happens, a larger installed base could have easily turned the game into a success.  I also get the impression that Ubisoft drank Nintendo's Koolaid about the Wii U being a popular console for core gamers.

I'm really not sure why a lot of people here are criticizing Ubisoft and saying that their goals were unreasonable when many of the same people were expecting the Wii U to be a LOT more successful.  If Nintendo's target numbers had been even close to correct, we'd be reading a different story right now.

strange, I thought I read somewhere that a zombi u 2 prototype was in developement?

Wasn't this a port? resident evil wii U edition?

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

'fraid not. Plus, RE hasn't been like this in a while.

Well it depends on how you define AAA of course.

Pesrsonally I agree that AAA should only be the real big games.

But I think it's assumed in the industry, at least at the beginning of current gen, that an AAA game is a typical high production game that takes a 100 member team 2 years to develop. And that means $20 million budget and up.

Nowaydays those $20 mill games are dime a dozen so perhaps we should call them just AA games, while the truly big guys are AAA (BF, Halo, COD, Grand Turismo, GTA, Assassin's Creed, Metal Gear Solid etc).

I think that was a rumor, not an actual confirmation from Ubisoft.
