Forums - Nintendo - ZombiU Was "Not Even Close" to Profitable, No Plans for a Sequel

Well of course it wasn't! WHY DON'T PEOPLE GET IT! MATURE GAMES DON'T SELL ON NINTENDO! LEAVE THAT TO SONY AND MS! NINTENDO DON'T CARE ABOUT THOSE KINDS OF GAMES! Why don't they understand? Games like this sell well on Playstation or Xbox. Nintendo's kiddy outlook isn't an insult but this is!

So, Resident Evil on the Wii?

Totally different story. Should have exempted RE and MG. I'm talking about those really gritty FPS like CoD or GOW.

Repeating a cliché doesn't make it true. Look at actual facts. Zombi U sold 460K out of 3.19 million = 14.4 percent of Wii U owners bought it. What's a comparable PS3 title, Dead Space 3? 520K out of 78 million = 0.7 percent of PS3 owners bought it. Any other mature games you'd like to consider? Resident Evil 6 - 2.48M out of 78M = 3.2 percent. The difference is those games were released on multiple platforms and could combine sales to reach a profitable number.

Nope, the problem is it's early in the system's life and there aren't enough Wii U owners to support whatever sales target Ubisoft set for it. The problem empirically is not that mature games don't sell on Nintendo. They do.

Was about to post this.I saw it on GI (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-07-08-does-nintendo-stand-a-chance-this-holiday)

There´s also an interview with Peter Moore: "The lack of online engagement that we see on Wii U [is troubling]," says Moore. "It's so integral to what we do. They're so small it's hardly worth running the servers. It seems like a box that's out of sync with the future of EA - which is one that gives a real social feel to our games. The Wii U feels like an offline experience right now."

This statement is to be expected, since EA's major beef with Nintendo is that Nintendo rejected EA taking over their entire online infrustructure.  I find it annoying when people say WiiU lacks online.  It's got eShop, free online matchmaking, netflix, browsing and Miiverse.  What more is needed?

no you misunderstand, what EA was referring to is internet traffic, which they would be right in this instance. COD for WIi U has less than 1000 players weekly, 1000 that is pitiful for the most popular online game outside of WoW. YOu cant even find matches sometimes and that is not a EA game

No, you misunderstand.  He spoke about traffic but then for personal reasons seque'd into saying it's a box that's out of sync and not social.  That's not ture.  Also, COD has way over 1000 players online all the time, let alone in the run of a week.  You are quite simply wrong with that stat.

I don't think there expectations with zombie U was all that high especially on a new console. It must have truly been a massive fail in terms of sales then lol.

OT: This is a problem with both Ubisoft and the Wii U sales. Giving that this is a new IP for a new console there was no way they thought this would have sold that well (especially giving the reviews). Heck even with the massive launch the Wii had, Red Steel has only managed to sold 650k units (according to VGC), so it's was huge mistake from Ubisoft to actually have faith in this game.

That number is way too low. Back in 2007 Ubisoft said it had sold 950,000 copies of Red Steel (http://uk.ign.com/articles/2007/04/26/ubis-big-wii-hits). It should have easily broken 1 million by now.

OT: Prior to the WiiU launch ZombiU was probably the most hyped exclusive on the system. I don't think Ubisoft were expecting system sales to be so slugish after the holiday season. It's sold well considering the install base but I'm sure they were expecting more consoles out in the wild to help maintain sales momentum for the game.

How many do you think are online now, or recently on average?

I'll boot the game up when I get home from work and let you know.  I haven't played it as much lately, but when I was playing it regularily in Jan-March it was usually about 3000+ online at once.  I played it last week and matchmaking was instant.  I think stats show that over 75% of Wii U's are online.  Miiverse is a very busy message board.  I think the owners of the system are into online, there just aren't many owners.

Since when is almost half a million sales bad? Too high demandings from third party's for Nintendo.

Correct on all points. There are 2,856 online on Black Ops II right now, at 3:30 p.m. EDT on a weekday. Can get a match in every core mode, 4/6 objective, hardcore TDM (most times KC as well), even 4/4 party modes. I don't play many evenings but I've seen it over 5,000. You can jump in tonight if he needs an actual number then.

PS4/Xbox1 better sell very quickly. Companies don't seem to understand that people actually have to own 200+ million systems like last generation in order for their sales targets to be possible.

So, does that mean only New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand were profitable on the Wii U?

Wow looks like 3rd party support really pays out on the Wii U. Ok to be fair the game was kinda shitty so I guess thats their own fault. I wonder how Watch_Dogs will do on Wii U compared to other current gen systems. And how long Ubisoft is going to support it, and with what kind of games?

The Divison and The Crew aren´t comming to the Wii U I wonder how long they will bother to port Assassins Creed over

hows it going to do? is this a serious inquiry? its gonna get blown away. just most of the multiplats so far. THe real question is how it will do compared to the other next gen consoles, especially since the game will be bundled with some PS4s

I don´t think it is fair to compare it to the next gen games. The PS4 and Xbone versions will be far superior. Plus Watch_Dogs is the launch game to get for most people who are going to purchase any of those systems. I think the Wii U version will sell the least by far.
