Forums - Gaming - WRPG VS JRPG BATTLE ROYAL!!!

Which type of RPGs you think is the best/more fun to play?

JRPG 237 69.91%

WRPG 100 29.50%

Total:337

years ago i would have said JRPGs no question, but now i dont know, JRPGS have gone down in quality alot in the past few years imho. and they just dont make that much of them. Yes i know we have portables but half of those are just ports of older good JRPGS. and they are not really pushing that genre forward. I always avoided WRPGs but Fallout 3 changed that, i think i spent more hours playing that than most JRPGs this gen. Hell im playing Mass Effect right now

Subjective question and depending on the RPG, a JRPG might be stylized like old school JRPGs (Etrian Odyssey and Class of Heroes) and some WRPGs might play like JRPGs.

Really it is stupid to trash one over another, since they all originate from the same tree.

JRPG

1) More Interesting Plots, as much as I love FallOut, I didn't care for the plot, but Mass Effect is exceptionally good.

2) More tasteful and unique characters (WRPG's have more generic aliens, kings, or zombies. In JRPG's, characters are rarely definable, except for the 1 whore mini skirt wearing girl)

3) Character Development (People change)

4) Prettier (compare XenoBlade to Elder Scrolls, much more imaginative)

5) I just do, suites my tastes in themes and gameplay better. I especially love simple JRPG's like Lost Odyssey and anything on the SNES, which still have rich plots and interesting settings and plot twists.

there should be an I love both option :(

I don't like these categories. They are not at all reflecting what they intend to.

I prefer turn-based rpg's which for the most part seem to be made in japan.

When I was younger I liked JRPGs more. I was always a console gamer so they were the default RPG for years. Once I started playing WRPGs and understanding them with the immense amount of freedom it made JRPGs seem like they were stuck in an era technically. It seems WRPGs try to push the limits technically whereas JRPGs don't. I mean originally turn-based combat was due to technical limitations on consoles, which is probably why Pokemon seems fine being that it's on a handheld.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

JRPGs from 9-17 years ago. WRPGs now.

RPGs made in Japan have lost their way for me and there isn't a single one I've really enjoyed this generation. Yet I recently bought Front Mission 3 and am playing it for the first time and it's great, limitations on 'super graphics' and simple play style besides. A good story and quirky Japanese characters is a great combination.

I can only hope that FFXVI is a simple turned based game with interesting characters and an exquisite story.

Hmm, pie.

JRPG, no contest... lazy to write why... most reasons have been posted already anyway..

I prefer JRPGs. For me WRPGs with a self-created character lack the RPG-Element since they simply lack deep characters with their own personality and their own motivation. The main quest is often only shallow and the greatest part of the game consists of repetitive sidequests (go there, kill x enemies and come back with item y). For me games like Oblivion play more like a big action/adventure.

For me a RPG is a game with a deep storyline where one or more moral dilemmas are explained in a game with the focus of seeing the dilemma trough the eyes of various characters. You get to know the motivations of the characters and the main focus is set on the narrative...
