EA: Next Tablets Will Have Nearly PS3-Quality Graphics

EA is taking mobile development seriously. In May, EA revealed that developers are working on Frostbite games for iOS and Android, aiming to “bring true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms."

In an interview at E3, we spoke with EA Labels president Frank Gibeau about how EA is approaching mobile development, plus how he feels tablet games will evolve.

“In the near future, the next wave of tablets and phones will have nearly Xbox 360 or PS3 capabilities in terms of graphics,” Gibeau told IGN. “Some of our engine technology that used to be console-specific now can, with modifications, be able to power games on tablets and on phones in the near future. We’re just getting ready for that.”

According to Gibeau, that transition won’t be as simple as a straight port, though.

“You have to redesign the game,” he explained. “You can’t just bring it over and have a virtual D-pad on the tablet. It doesn’t work. You have to re-architect it around touch, voice, camera. Our teams are having a lot of fun with that, reimagining an experience on a tablet using the same graphics and assets in some ways, but completely remixing the meal. Same ingredients, completely different meal. That’s kind of the way we think about it.”

Well let's hope that the WiiU gets some mobile ports from EA then...

so, next next tablets will have ps360 graphics? considering a price of 500 bucks and that they will release 10 years later it doesn't sound super impressive.

Good graphics don't make up for the simplistic or straight away crappy controls. That is why dedicated gaming handhelds are still not replaceble by tablets.

Game of the year 2017 so far:

5. Resident Evil VII
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
3. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
2. Horizon Zero Dawn
1. Super Mario Odyssey

The controls will still be awful though.

I have no doubt that with the universal controller support with ios7 smartphones and tablets are going to crush handhelds into oblivion.. people can choose their preffered controller and lets face it.. handheld can't keep up with mobile phones...

some will like slip cases like this

others will like a controller

or docks:

This is one (of many) reasons why I'm baffled with Nintendo's direction with WiiU. It was obvious that tablets (and most likely Android home gaming systems) would outstrip WiiU on power before the end of this coming generation. Fact is, they will be comparible when this gen is basically still starting, which puts Nintendo in direct competition with them and at a hugely disadvantaged price points ($300 home game system & $60 games vs Free (Gamepop Mini) - $100+ home game systems or $500 tablets (which do all sorts of other things and are fully portable) and free - $15 games.

As others have posted there are all sorts of ways to play without touch controls now (if you want) and more and more phones/tablets will play off TV too.

EA and other 3rd parties will be porting all their old and some upcoming games direct to these systems (and still not to WiiU). This will also undermine PS4/XB1 (which is why MS is so focused on multimedia) but at least they still won't be outdated powerwise until closer to the end of the gen.

Nintendo's best defense would have been active, family-based gaming like Wii specialized in which tablets/Android systems could never touch. But instead they make a system that specializes in touch-based single play. D'oh!

what if you can use your Xbox one controller on the tablet?

most handheld gaming actually takes place in the home.

I think something like this (borrowing NiKKoM's images) would be terrible because you can't hold both the tablet and the controller in your hands at the same time, leaving you with either laying the tablet flat on a table or placing it on a stand.

These options looks is more viable to me.

Every year they says that... every year I get a game on tablet and it is way behind PS360 in graphics.

i wonder what nintendo was thinking.. i mean surely they saw the images like these:

I mean their games will get them though the rough ride but still.. they could have predicted that this was were tablets are also going..
