Hello all! My friend and I are currently conducting a study about cross-cultural communication. We thought it would be a good idea to test people from different cultures on various facets of culture. I figured one avenue could be here since we have a diversity of gamers on VGC. Below is a video that is extracted from a Jamaican comedy and imposed on a skit from Crank Yankers (for added humor, I suppose). Basically what I want to know is:

1 Did you comprehend it?

2 Did you find it funny?

3 Why or why not?

4 What cultural background do you come from? (you can also elaborate on your exposure ...  for instance you may be Chinese but made Jamaican friends in college so you understand their parlance).

Now I'm from Latin America, but I must admit, I LOVE British humor. A lot of that has to do with the exposure though. I made a lot of British friends growing up so what the Brits say is easily understood for me.

I am going to put up a poll but I will not make it exhaustive. I will limit the options for the purpose for the study. Thank you all in advance.

1. I understand, overall, what was happening just based off of what the character in the car was saying. But if every character spoke like the one using the right mic in the recording studio, I could probably not understand it at all.
2. No.
3. There was nothing in there that seemed to point towards humor, in my opinion. First off, I could barely understand the one character (mentioned above) and the one I could understand didn't really say anything funny. The only thing somewhat funny was the movements of the character in the car. The way she "overreacted" I guess....!
4. My background is mostly composed of British decent with a small amount of German. My exposure to this type of Jamaican comedy (1-10) would probably be 4/5.

Thank you! Very good details there, NP.

Yea, that makes it even harder. I'm originally from Colombia, so learning the Queen's English wasn't bad, but Jamaican Creole (English) is a totally different kettle of fish. It is its own language and knowing the Queen's English or what is practiced in America would not suffice. Gracias por ayudarme con esto.

Maybe being so close to the united states is not so good after all...

De nada

I understood about half of what the radio host said. But I got the point of the skit.
Didn't find it all that funny.
I like witty humour. Think something like Lesbian vampire killers or Waiting.
I have grown up in Australia but am of 100% Serbian descent.

That is the best kind, in my opinion. Generally speaking,  I abhor the simple variety, especially fart jokes and the like. When I was a child I often chuckled at Adam Sandler’s movies. Now I hold them with disgust and can’t go beyond 10 minutes of watching them.

1. I nearly understand everything what the female character in the car was saying but the characters in the radio
station were talking gibberish.
2. It wasn't boring to watch, but I didn't find it funny.
3. Perhaps it would be funny if you can comprehend what the guys were saying.
4. I'm from Puerto Rico.
