Just started survival too. I love it :p
And I didn't know you could shoot extinguishers ;0
Survivor doesn't seem all that bad, just you don't have listen mode and you have to be more intelligent getting around infected or other enemies.
for my play on survival it was about avoid, stealth and on a few occasions smoke bomb and run like hell to the next autosave point.
Near the end of the game in the firefly hospital I stealth killed 10 guys or so then when 4 more guys came in I just said f this used a smoke bomb and ran through. The area where you usually hide as several run by before the guy pops out of the door I through a brick at one guy meeled another two and just managed to get to the door to trigger the cutscene. With a quarter of a bar of health left.
This then forced me to go all stealth for the final section since even after my health went back up to a bar and a fraction when I died. First time I got to a counter before the final door. The coast was clear no fireflies there and none looking that way then two fireflies spawned right there. That wasn't being flanked and not paying attention to my surroundings that was just mean. Next time I smoke bombed before jumping over the counter, the two fireflies spawned choking and I was through the door and done with combat for that playthrough.

Survival in this game means STEALTH ONLY. I finished it in survival in my second playthrough, after playing it in hard.
I have I tip for anyone struggling in this mode. Play from chapter select from the last chapters to the first ones; as those checkpoint have saved the weapons, ammo and items you had the last time you reached the chapter. That way you can have more bullets and other items; if you did not used them before reaching that checkpoint.
I played in hard the first time, mostly in stealth so I had lots of things for my survival chapter select playthrough. And that made it easier and faster; since I had lots of bullets sometimes I just went guns blazing and throwing granades since I did not had to worry for the next chapter because I have already done it XD.
Once you finish all the chapters with that method; you will require to do the last chapter again and see the whole credits so that the trophy pops.
Hope it helps.
PS: That scene is very easy to do in stealth. You suck ;)
Really? I'm finding it pretty much the same as hard difficulty (my first playthrough was on hard), and I have the masochistic habit of refusing to heal myself so I've pretty much completed half of the game on survival without using a single health kit (I used 7 for the whole game in hard). Must be because I didn't use Listen Mode my first time.
I think the most difficult part of survivor is when enemies are alerted to your presence. Since you have to beat the game at least once to unlock survivor, most of us have the encounters relatively fresh in our heads, so while having to play the game without listen mode was an adjustment, it was offset by my prior knowledge of areas.
However, when you've been spotted by the enemy, that is when I have noticed the difference in difficulty between hard and survivor. In my opinion, you get the most out of the game if you play a mixture of stealth (take out one or two enemies) and "guns blazing" (shoot the rest), because while stealth killing makes the game easier to progress through content, you're missing out on much of the spontaneity of the combat (e.g., shooting a fire extinguisher, holding someone at gunpoint, Ellie stabbing someone to get them off of you, etc.).

Dude I first played the game on Normal, then Hard. Never ever in my life used Listen Mode and I stealthed the game because its the obvious way to do it. Save ammo and take out guys without losing health? Sure!
But now, I want a challenge. I want to have those 10 guys come at me and fight me on survival difficulty where I die fast. You ought to know that the video I posted was a demonstration of the AI, I actually went guns blazing through it without it being too hard :D. But I really wanted to show that it really is quite challenging to do so and that is why I do it! It's fun!
Going around choking people is too easy and I want a challenge :)

It is easy if you stealth. All the difficulty does is add so you take more damage and get less items. But you can pretty much go through the whole game and just stealth thus not requiring any kind of health at all or any items seriously. But whats the fun in that? :D
