Nintendo's been decling for about 4 years now from the peak days of the Wii/DS and he's botched both the 3DS and Wii U launches despite having ample time to learn from his mistakes. Ken Kutaragi was given the axe after a few months of the PS3, even though he basically built the entire Playstation division and the PS1 + PS2 sold 250+ million consoles worldwide.

I agree he should be given some slack, but I think he should also acknowledge he needs some help as he's obviously made several poor decisions in guiding the company since the Wii peaked in 2009 or so and consequently put the company in bad positions with both the 3DS and again with the Wii U.

There should not be such wild highs and lows, of the Wii being the fastest selling console ever for its first few years, to then rapidly declining, and then the successor to Wii being basically the slowest selling console out of the gate since the Dreamcast or Saturn. Unacceptable, especially when they had years to prep for this launch.

Iwata didn't have ample time between the botched 3DS launch and the Wii U launch. Games take about two years to develop and if you realize that you have a problem in summer 2011 and need to shift parts of your workforce to speed up development of key titles for the 3DS, then there's really no time to change anything significant about your home console strategy.

Kutaragi was given the axe after burning through the PS2 profits with the PSP and PS3 in a short matter of time, as well as shifting additional R&D costs of the PS3 into other divisions. Iwata's decisions haven't come close to wiping out all the profits of the previous generation. His decisions have been really bad though and he should have seen it coming before greenlighting the entire Wii U concept.

Wii U (Project Cafe) dev kits were sent out over 2 years ago now, that was when it started leaking all over the internet.

Iwata really didn't realize the system may need a "big" title on the scale of Metroid Prime/Mario Galaxy/Halo/Uncharted then? Really, the guy is out of touch software wise IMO. Such a game would be ready by now, but no forsight on his part.

They bet the entire farm on Nintendo Land being a blockbuster hit that would carry the system for months. It's not even like they supported the Wii much for 2011 or 2012 either.

Nintendo Land & New Super Mario Bros U was enough for the launch IMO. Wii U was pretty successful at the beginning. The problem was they sucked at following it up. No new 1st party game until June? Unexceptable. Iwata should stay though, he is still good at his job and I think he can turn it around.

HA @ the bolded!

Essentially, all of Nintendo's mistakes come down to the point of view that the Wii was wrong, so they did pretty much everything the other way around.

Hey now: the Wii U still uses the Wiimote.*

* Likely because the system can't support multiple Gamepads.

honestly, if they made an advanced wiimote or something new to motion controls called it wii 2, priced it at 199 or 249(which they could have without the gamepad), it would have sold extremely well. The concept of the wii in my opinion never died, it was nintendos faith in it died in 2010

If that's what they wanted to do, they should've just honestly launched the "Wiii U" in fall 2011 with Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and all the third party PS3/360 ports. At least they'd have had a 2 year headstart in that case.

Nintendo Land + tablet controller could've been like a seperate game ala Wii Fit + Balance Board still I think.

I think the wii u gamepad is actually a good idea, but not necessarily the best for console to be revolved around because of how expensive it is. think about it, miyamoto said it would add 100 dollars to the ps4 and xboxone if it was added, like holy crap. Iwata should of thought this through before going through with it. I think its going to sell 40 to 50 million eventually, which isnt bad, but they could have sold a lot more. Thats the price you pay i guess when you innovate, but you gotta know when to do it

He's done some good but he seriously needs to fix certain traits that he has shown such as not trying very hard to diversifying their software output to reach the traditional western gamer and sticking with the portable mindset when it comes to hardware with minor incremental improvements rather then attempting to push the edge more when it comes to power because the gamble worked for the Wii.

I think Iwata has some great ideas but the way things have gone for the company, has suffered in recent years and I can't help but think his (or maybe those below him) particular stubbornness in what will work and slow adoption of industry trends or growth avenues that they don't start.

Looks like we didn't please understand enough.

Why didn't he say he was misinterpreted when the comments were first published then?  Why wait until now, when he's failed to meet his stated target?

I call BS.  Whether he should actually resign is another argument, but I believe he made the pledge to do so.

The only reason he mentioned it now is because he was asked about it.

Also someone posted the direct quote a few pages back, he never said he would resign
