I honestly don't care about scores, I lost faith in them a long time ago. When I want to know about a game I look for user's opinions and some gameplay videos to see if I'll like it or not.

What I'm just saying is that if there's a score, it should reflect what the review says. That's why I said that I didn't understand negative reviews that end with very good scores and viceversa.

Also, PC games reviews should be the same as console games reviews, just with the added tech info to know if it runs well or not and if there's much difference between the different settings. There are a lot of games where there's almost no difference between high and very high/ultra settings, albeit a huge drop in performance.

Well first of all that review wasn't negative, so why would there be a negative score? You just think it was negative because your own standards tell you that the negative points mentioned matter more. Also scores don't mean the same thing for the same reviewer. One reviewer might give a 5 to game that was ok while others call it trash. Some reviewers will give an 8 to an ok game while for others an 8 is a really really good game.

For some people performance makes or breaks a purchase so it should be an integral part of the review. A part that can also influence the score if the reviewer values it. See, you're now treating your own standards as if they're universal again. You just decided that 30fps isn't worth influencing a score while for a lot of people it completely devalues a game. That's why we need different reviewers with different standards. So not all reviews are generic bullshit that only helps one portion of consumers with one specific set of standards.

There is absolutely no point for every reviewer to adhere to the same standards because reviews from different reviewers have absolutely nothing to do with each other and are not meant to be compared. So why do you want a set standard for something that is not supposed to be compared?

Well, for starters, I haven't read the review and the omly info I got from it is what you just said:

According to the German Gamestar review of Elex it seems to be exactly Gothic. Horrible battle mechanics, janky animations, loads of bugs and the best RPG world anyone has ever seen. They gave it an 85.

Reading that first part, one would think that the game isn't exactly good, right? Now, if the problem here is that you have exaggerated the negatives, how could I know it?

The problem of using the whole scale of scores or not is another matter, a problem known for all of us that has been discussed a lot of times and that won't go away anytime soon, sadly. Also, given that I already said that I don't trust aggregate score sites and that I read reviews, trying to use that against me is a weak argument.

Lastly, and to make my point clear about PC games reviews, when I said that a PC game should be reviewed like a console one, I was tlaking about the game mechanics and such, not the technical aspects of it, which I also said that should also be tested and reviewed to inform us how stable, buggy or good/bad optimized is, something of interest for us. We are on the same page here.

I honestly don't know what else we can discuss about it anymore since we've already said it all:

  • Reviews are meant to be read. Scores aren't the most important part of it
  • Even then, review sites and reviewers should use the full scale, 0-10/100, and not use 5 or 6 as the base number
  • Sites like Metacritic and such do more harm than good as they focus only on the scores
  • PC games reviews should talk about both aspects of a game: the game itself and the tech side of it. And then judge it with both sides in mind (aka "good game burdened by tech problems that make it unplayable")

This whole discussion seems to be about my comment about your description of the review which, as I explained at the beginning of this post, I took it as negative. If that wasn't the case and it was simply another case of you using your sarcasm, then sorry but it didn't look that way.

To prove your competence and innocence, you have to make it through parenting trials with your kids intact, which is to say not on fire, poisoned, ravaged by seagulls, bludgeoned by kangaroos, electrocuted, run over or otherwise maimed.

What I said wasn't sarcasm in the slightest. All those issues are present in the game and are bad. What you were missing was the context.

I mean I have been raving about Gothic and ELEX enough in this thread and how much I love the series despite its flaws. I have said over and over again how world building and freedom are the most important aspect to me in open world games and that nobody does it better than Piranha Bytes. So when I say that ELEX has the exact same flaws as Gothic and the exact same strengths as Gothic of course that is a very positive assessment. You just took it as negative because you didn't think about the context.

Anyway, my original comment wasn't directed to this review in particular, but to what you put on your post and what happens every now and then with reviewers. So let me ask this: does the review say, in your exact words, "Horrible battle mechanics, janky animations, loads of bugs and the best RPG world anyone has ever seen"?

Because if they haven't, and that is simply your conclusions (exaggerated or not) on to what that review says about ELEX, then we're wasting our time.

By the way, I already knew that you were looking forward to this game, just like you're also looking forward to Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Of course a professional review doesn't say it that way. Because in a way, a reviewer who enjoyed a game will make sure to recommend it as best as possible while still mentioning the flaws, because that is his job. I don't need it to recommend to anyone so I can be more frank.

Maybe the bug part was abit overexaggerated. After playing for 5h I found nothing game breaking and just one bug during combat in a specific circumstance. Though there are also a lot of small issues I didn't mention.

A new Overwatch patch went live today that restores Lucio's Wall Ride speed, gives a minor buff to Mercy's Valkyrie ability, and adds new voicelines for Cultist Zenyatta. Bug fixes have been made, and PC players can now take advantage of some new social tools as well, by setting their status to Online, Away, Busy, or Appear Offline—although that last one won't fool anyone in your friends list if you end up in the same match.

http://www.pcgamer.com/activision-wins-patent-that-uses-matchmaking-to-make-you-want-to-buy-stuff/
Activision has successfully filed a patent designed for use in multiplayer matchmaking systems. In short, it's an idea to engender envy at teammates' or opponents' gear through the matchmaking algorithm itself.

Huge Battle Chasers: Nightwar patch makes it less grindy and more difficult
http://www.pcgamer.com/huge-battle-chasers-nightwar-patch-makes-it-less-grindy-and-more-difficult/
Battle Chasers: Nightwar has been a long time coming. We got our first proper look at the turn-based RPG earlier this year, but it's been in the oven ever since its developers, Airship Syndicate, grouped up following the closure of Darksiders developer Vigil Games. Now it's finally out, and it's had a rough time of it, with many players criticizing how grindy the later stages of the game can be. In a recent, massive patch, Airship Syndicate addressed several of these complaints.

Sony Music Entertainment has opened its own game publishing label
http://www.pcgamer.com/sony-music-entertainment-has-opened-its-own-game-publishing-label/
It looks like Sony has grown tired of just having one video game company, after selling Sony Online Entertainment (now Daybreak Studios) a couple of years ago. Sony Music Entertainment is now throwing its hat in the ring, announcing the launch of its own publishing label, Unties.

>>I'm posting this because three of the four announced games will also come to PC.

There's some new info regarding new panels for future monitors that could be worth keeping in mind for those that plan to buy a new monitor in the next 12-18 months:

LG.Display Panel Updates for 34" 1440p at 144Hz
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/news_archive/38.htm#lg.display_144hz_update
LG.Display are planning to develop their very popular and widely used 34" Ultrawide panels over the next year.(...)The overall plans involve developments to push refresh rate to 144Hz, extend the colour space to around 98% DCI-P3 coverage (equating to 135% sRGB) and offer HDR support at vary levels.

We've talked in the past about the new 34" ultrawide IPS panel from LG.Display which will offer a high refresh rate of 144Hz while maintaining the high 3440 x 1440 resolution. This has apparently now gone in to mass production as of September (...)This module supports G-sync incidentally according to the LG.Display specs. Later next year there are plans to develop this panel category to also support G-sync HDR which is likely to involve a multi-zone (probably 512) full-array local dimming backlight along with the necessary specs to offer optimal HDR performance, including that boosted DCI-P3 colour space. That isn't planned for production until Q2 2018 though.

AU Optronics Panel Production Plans inc. 4K at 144Hz Update
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/news_archive/38.htm#auo_roadmap_oct17
We have an update on some of the panel production plans from AU Optronics which includes some interesting new options, as well as updates to some of the eagerly anticipated panels already announced and expected this year - but delayed in some cases now.

4K @ 144Hz Panels and their Future

  • 27" 3840 x 2160 resolution @ 144Hz panels already planned for several monitors (Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ, Acer Predator X27, AOC AGON AG273UG)
  • Production delayed until Nov 2017, release of displays expected Q1 2018
  • 32" version planned but not for panel production until Q3 2018 - displays not likely until Q4 2018 (at best)

General Gaming Panels

  • 240Hz refresh rate for TN Film panels including new 2560 x 1440 resolution offerings (27") in Q2 2018, and 1920 x 1080 curved HD panels in Q3 2018
  • Colour space improvements from 100% sRGB to 90-95% DCI-P3 coverage
  • Peak brightness pushed to 600 cd/m2 to offer some improved HDR support
  • Pushing response times further

Curved Gaming Panels

  • 35" VA with 3440 x 1440, 120Hz and moderate HDR support planned for production January 2018
  • 35" VA with 3440 x 1440, 200Hz and full HDR support (with a 512-zone full-array local dimming backlight, 90% DCI-P3 coverage and 1000 cd/m2 peak brightness) now delayed until Q2 2018 production - displays likely to be Q2 at best like the already announced Asus ROG Swift PG35VQ and Acer Predator X35
