Great thread!
Oh, bugger. Just as I was counting my pennies, content in the knowledge that every family member I tolerate is getting a half-decent Christmas present this year, Steam goes chucks petrol on my plans and lights a match. Yes, a Steam Sale is upon us, and it's autumnal one, despite winter knocking at the door. November 27 to December 3, that's how long you have to hold out for if you don't want to throw all of your money at Valve.
I have no idea how I'm going to manage it.
Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, Final Fantasy 11 and Dragon Quest 10 will engage in a season of big cross-over events from December, right through to March Square-Enix has detailed the events and released a new batch of screens.
Marvel Heroes developer Gazillion Entertainment has added X-Men mainstay Gambit to the character roster, and has published a new trailer to mark the occasion.
World of Warcraft’s Pilgrim’s Bounty event is back. Full of virtual food and rewards, the festival contains tables filled with Thanksgiving fare outside the major cities where players can sit and gobble down the vittles. Daily cooking quests will be doled out, trainers, vendors, and more will be around and you will earn cosmetic rewards and the Plump Turkey pet for completing quests and participating in the festivities. The event is live and ends on December 2. Hit up Battle.net for more information.
Lineage has made $1.8 billion in the 15 years since launch in 1998, NCsoft has announced. The medieval fantasy MMORPG has become more popular in South Korea over the year, and has millions of subscribers. The game is also available in Chinese, English and Japanese markets. Lineage 2, set 150 years before its predecessor, was released in 2003 and has been played by more than 14 million users, with the majority in Asia. The game went free-to-play in 2011. Lineage 3, known as Lineage Eternal, has been in development since 2011, and a beta schedule will be released around the end of the year. Thanks, Kotaku.
A new video for Total War: Rome 2 has been released, and features commentary from historians Bettany Hughes, Mike Loades, Lynette Nusbacher and Dr. Adrian Goldsworthy along with footage from the game. The documentary short takes a look at The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, which saw three full legions of Rome destroyed. Watch below.
Saints Row 4 has a new DLC pack available today which gives the player some batshit crazy superpowers, allowing you to dispatch your enemies in every fashion imaginable. The Element of Destruction pack even lets you turn your intended victim into a time bomb. When the time is up they explode. Then, there’s the Airstrike Stomp where you like Stomp on the ground, sending all enemies in your vicinity flying up into the air like a rocket – and then they explode. Like I said. It’s crazy sounding. Check out the video for it below. The pack will run you $2.99 and if you are in the mood from some Zin outfits, the Zinyak Attack Pack is also out today for $1.99 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
The Debut 7 Bundle from Indie Royale is now available. It features six titles: Mitsurugi Kamui Hikae, Metal Planet, Pulse Shift, Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman’s Mine, Millennium 2 – Take Me Higher and Fleet Buster. All the games are available for Windows via Desura and are in Greenlight on Steam. The current minimum is $2.99 and if you pay $7 or more, you will also net the Chiptune Hero EP album by Dj Cutman. Hit up the link for more information.
Star Citizen has hit $33 million, after just this morning the total sat at $31,137,083.
Centuries ago, some not-yet-American folk ate a meal with a bunch of people they met and would later treat rather poorly. I'm sure there's an analogue in the Star Wars universe, somewhere. Jabba probably shared a turkey with Luke before attempting to feed him to the Rancor.
To celebrate Thanksgiving, Star Wars: The Old Republic is putting on a double XP weekend, getting characters up to snuff for the approaching Galactic Starfighter expansion. The event ends on Sunday, December 1st 11PM PST or December 2nd at 7AM GMT. It started an hour ago, so get cracking.
The new Need for Speed makes a technically bold promise - co-operative, high speed driving across 100 miles of vaguely American tarmac. That’s probably why it arrived last week on PlayStation, Xbox and PC with a framerate locked to 30, much to the chagrin of a subset of players.
For some, a framerate below 50 is unthinkable - like shoes without socks. If that’s you, well - there is a way. But it's a payoff.
In a victory for justice and, more specifically, Perihelion Interactive, six-player sandbox sci-fi RPG The Mandate has been funded. They’re a week early, which you’d presume would mean a little time to turn all the lights off on the shuttle and just drift through the vacuum, minds pleasantly empty, until required to write a celebratory Kickstarter update.
But shockingly, no: they’ve already prepared a new developer log for the occasion, and announced three new feature-carrots to tempt those last few budding backers.
Football Manager 14 offers the most comprehensive simulation of the if-not-beautiful-then-quite-pretty game we’re ever likely to know. Even EA have been forced to admit defeat, retiring the FIFA Manager series earlier this week.
But it’s not quite a true simulation. It turns out there are elements of real football that Miles Jacobson and his team at Sports Interactive would rather forget.
Source Filmmaker remains an incredible resource for budding animators, sound directors and sadist comics, and that’s been proven all over again in this year’s Saxxy Awards.
ArenaNet are looking for able gamers to pledge allegiance to Guild Wars 2. In return for their oath the developer is offering the chance to win one of 5,000 free copies of the game.
It’s one of the more extreme promotions we’ve come across. However, if you’ve been wanting a copy of Guild Wars 2, this is one of the better ways to acquire the game. It’s certainly better than selling organs, robbing an HMV, or pretending you’re writing a feature on the game and requesting a press copy.
Totem Arts has announced that its freeware MP remake of Command & Conquer: Renegade will be released this coming February (on February 26th to be more precise). This makes almost too much sense. Yet I almost don’t want it to happen. Mysterious, infamous survival game Pathologic’s power stems more from its legend (a game of existential brutality that reached for the very stars) than its reality (broken, arduous, appallingly translated); to bring it onto a more conventional plane of reality by remaking it, and in turn by having lots of people play it, could upset its mythology.
On the other hand, Pathologic. It matters.

THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION POST.
Oh, how simple things were for PC gaming back in 2008. With the indie invasion yet to begin in earnest, a videogame with a funny name and a techno soundtrack grabbed our attention wholesale, rather than made us roll our eyes or utter an ‘oh, you guys.’ Russian-made comedy RTS Stalin vs Martians! It was the best of jokes, it was the worst of jokes. However you might feel about the depiction of the General secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union as a figure of cartoonish fun, it was certainly the worst of games. And now, like warts or that stray cat with bowel troubles that you once took pity on, it’s come back unbidden.

Wonderful news from the tweet-o-dodecagon today: Wasteland 2‘s beta finally has a release date. After it slipped from October into daaaaaaaates unknown (woooooooooo), inXile CEO Brian Fargo has claimed the Kickstarter darling is only two-and-a-half weeks out. That in mind, I got in touch with Fargo to find out what took so long, how much of the game will be available in the beta, whether it’ll expand over time, and what all of this means for the final game. Read on for the full thing.

Here are my thoughts during the first 55 seconds of the Catacomb Kids video:
“Looks nice, but sure looks like yet another pixel roguelike.”
“He’s got a really decent jump. That’s neat.”
“Wait, distractions? There’s more happening here.”
“Oh. Oooohhhh. Oh, okay, yeah, I’m posting about this.

This 2 news regarding monitors give me ... something:
OLED TVs will soon get cheaper
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1385446730
Samsung and LG are producing their own OLED panels, and we hear that they are steadily improving production yields and reducing costs. It is also reported that Samsung and LG are setting up new, larger OLED plants in Korea.
The Chinese display manufacturers will also be joining soon. TCL – the third largest TV maker during some months – has received board approval to build an 8.5G plant to produce LCD and OLED panels. TCL aims to produce 55-inch OLED panels. Construction of the plant will commence in late 2013. Another Chinese display manufacturer, BOE, also has plans to set up an 8G plant to produce OLED panels for TVs, but no date has been announced.
Another interesting announcement came from Kateeva, a US-based company. They have finished work on and announced a new OLED production machine that “prints” OLED panels. It is suitable for mass production and is said to lower production costs significantly.
The CEO says that it has the potential to make OLED panels 30% cheaper than comparable LCD panels – but not from the beginning. The machine can produce OLED panels with 4K resolution in 31” sizes and up. Six 55” OLED panels can be produced in 90 to 120 seconds. The machine will be available to buy for display manufacturers around the world. It is called YIELDJet and is said to be the first of its kind.
Affordable 27 & 32" 4K PC monitors coming soon
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1385551858
4K PC monitors are still very expensive. Today, almost every 4K monitor is based on Sharp’s 31.5” 4K panel, but starting in Q1 or Q2 of 2014 AU Optronics will start producing 4K LCD panels in 27 and 32 inch sizes. AUO’s panels are usually affordable.
AUO’s panels are often found inside affordable BenQ, Philips, Asus, and even some Samsung monitors. That is why it is exciting to see AUO initiate production of 4K PC panels.
AUO will start producing four panels in 27 and 32 inch sizes. All four panels will feature a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels. Two of each will be available, one with sRGB gamut and one with AdobeRGB gamut coverage. Both can reproduce 10-bit by using dithering.
The 4K LCD panels are based on AHVA technology with edge LED. AHVA is a type of IPS panel with wide viewing angles, accurate color reproduction, but relatively weak contrast. AUO says that the contrast ratio of all four panels is 1000:1.
AUO expects to start mass production during Q1 or Q2 2014, so expect to see cheaper 4K PC monitors around that time.
And from [H]ardforum, the panel details

Hm, a "cheap" 24" 1080p OLED monitor or an AHVA 4K 27" one? Not sure...
But I'm sure Permalite would go for the later. Or 3 of the later to be more precise . (j/k)

Ah, the love song. Long has it taught many a youngster how to woo the person of their desire. Most successful of them all was that West Country classic that divulged the secret to a long and happy relationship: the joining of land. Of course to achieve the meld of estates, one must know how to use professional agricultural methods in order to produce the most profitable results from said land. In days gone by this would require knowledge passed on from generation to generation. Today though, all you (probably) need is Professional Farmer 2014, available now on Steam.
What happens when a couple of bored New Zealanders jack in their jobs to go an make an indie game? They become wildly ambitious and come up with the idea to create a sci-fi MMO that’s equal parts real-time strategy, online battle arena, and role-playing game. The result is the acroynm-packed headline you see above, but also a Kickstarter campaign that will help this teeny tiny Kiwi studio fund their dream.
OuterWorlds Online takes the conventions of its influencial game genres and smashes them together at high speed, then blends them with a healthy dose of sci-fi staples: mechs, folding guns, and power armour. Oh, it then generates entire universes through the use of algorithms. Shiny.
Former DICE chief and EA Studios president Patrick Söderlund knows that Battlefield 4’s release didn’t go as well as it might. “There have been some issues,” he said. “I think we've done a good job rectifying some of them and we'll work around the clock do do the rest.”
He agreed that players should expect “base functionality” from a game at launch - but suggested that nothing could be done before release to simulate the effects of a ton of players descending on its systems all at once.
Wolfire Games has released a new video for its rabbit bunny action brawler, Overgrowth, in which the company’s programmer, David Rosen, demonstrates some of the new features he added to it. Well, when I first dabbled in Eyefinity I wen't with triple 24" 1920x1080 Twisted Nematic panels and I thought that was big enough.
Over time though I got used to the extra screen real estate, so I got something bigger (Triple 1440P 27" panels) and over time I got used to it.
The great thing is when a game supports eyefinity well it can be incredible as the entire game takes up all your vision and peripheral vision.
The downside usually is that in a game... Developers will see fit to lock part of the User interface to the top left and something like the mini-map in the bottom right when generally you're fixated in the middle, so sometimes you don't see something you should be keeping an eye on.
Granted I enjoyed the heck out of Dragon Age 1+2 and Mass Effect 3 in Eyefinity, something like Company of Heroes or Civilization was a complete and utter headache across three screens.
But you do have the choice to play on your primary screen for games that suit it best.
Still even with some of the downsides, I would more than happily drop 10 grand on three 32" 4k panels if I had the cash and the panels available, might happen around tax time next year if all the planets align correctly.

My biggest problem is height. 23" (what I have now) or 24" is the sweet spot for me. More than that and the screen starts to be too high for me. It's uncomfortable. But I'm not against Eyefinity/Surround, and I wouldn't mind to try it.
I tried with 2 monitors (my 23" monitor and an LG 3D monitor/TV also in 23") during 2012's E3, with the video stream in one screen and the forums in the other. I liked it but and even with something that simple, the bezels pissed me off. So for gaming I'd really, really hate it... also I'm sure that with my luck, when playing shooters I'd get killed by someone hiding behind the bezels.
I'll stay single screen until they release monitor with very little bezel.
Please excuse my bad English.

I see.
Well, something like a 2560x1080 panel might be better suited. :P Or three. Bahaha!
Also, you can't really hide behind the bezel if you don't use bezel compensation, basically when something hits the edge of the screen it appears on the next.
If you do use Bezel compensation then some of the game is hidden behind the bezels.
Personally, Bezels don't bother me, they did when I first tried Eyefinity, but it's second nature now, but everyone is different. :)

With bezels I know I have to choose between seeing the mouse "jump" and the image fracturated or loosing what hides behind them. But I don't want to choose, damn it!
And yeah, I've looked reviews of those 21:9 monitors. "Bad" for office productivity but very good for watching videos and gaming.
