The cash-guzzling black hole known as the Steam Autumn Sale has arrived
Oh, bugger. Just as I was counting my pennies, content in the knowledge that every family member I tolerate is getting a half-decent Christmas present this year, Steam goes chucks petrol on my plans and lights a match. Yes, a Steam Sale is upon us, and it's autumnal one, despite winter knocking at the door. November 27 to December 3, that's how long you have to hold out for if you don't want to throw all of your money at Valve.
I have no idea how I'm going to manage it.

Saints Row 4 has a new DLC pack available today which gives the player some batshit crazy superpowers, allowing you to dispatch your enemies in every fashion imaginable. The Old Republic celebrates the consumption of turkey meat with a double XP weekend
Comments1Centuries ago, some not-yet-American folk ate a meal with a bunch of people they met and would later treat rather poorly. I'm sure there's an analogue in the Star Wars universe, somewhere. Jabba probably shared a turkey with Luke before attempting to feed him to the Rancor.
To celebrate Thanksgiving, Star Wars: The Old Republic is putting on a double XP weekend, getting characters up to snuff for the approaching Galactic Starfighter expansion. The event ends on Sunday, December 1st 11PM PST or December 2nd at 7AM GMT. It started an hour ago, so get cracking.
Need for Speed Rivals can run at 60 FPS after all - but at a cost
CommentThe new Need for Speed makes a technically bold promise - co-operative, high speed driving across 100 miles of vaguely American tarmac. That’s probably why it arrived last week on PlayStation, Xbox and PC with a framerate locked to 30, much to the chagrin of a subset of players.
For some, a framerate below 50 is unthinkable - like shoes without socks. If that’s you, well - there is a way. But it's a payoff.
Extremely co-op interplanetary RPG The Mandate will land safely atop its Kickstarter target
Comments1In a victory for justice and, more specifically, Perihelion Interactive, six-player sandbox sci-fi RPG The Mandate has been funded. They’re a week early, which you’d presume would mean a little time to turn all the lights off on the shuttle and just drift through the vacuum, minds pleasantly empty, until required to write a celebratory Kickstarter update.
But shockingly, no: they’ve already prepared a new developer log for the occasion, and announced three new feature-carrots to tempt those last few budding backers.
Football hooliganism doesn’t belong in the "more utopian world" of Football Manager
CommentFootball Manager 14 offers the most comprehensive simulation of the if-not-beautiful-then-quite-pretty game we’re ever likely to know. Even EA have been forced to admit defeat, retiring the FIFA Manager series earlier this week.
But it’s not quite a true simulation. It turns out there are elements of real football that Miles Jacobson and his team at Sports Interactive would rather forget.
Saxxiest 2013 Team Fortress 2 Source Filmmakers announced: watch their work here
Comments1Source Filmmaker remains an incredible resource for budding animators, sound directors and sadist comics, and that’s been proven all over again in this year’s Saxxy Awards.
Guild Wars 2 launches Great MMO Migration contest. Free copy to those willing to pledge allegiance
CommentArenaNet are looking for able gamers to pledge allegiance to Guild Wars 2. In return for their oath the developer is offering the chance to win one of 5,000 free copies of the game.
It’s one of the more extreme promotions we’ve come across. However, if you’ve been wanting a copy of Guild Wars 2, this is one of the better ways to acquire the game. It’s certainly better than selling organs, robbing an HMV, or pretending you’re writing a feature on the game and requesting a press copy.

Most Logical: Kickstarted Pathologic Remake On The Cards
By Alec Meer on November 27th, 2013 at 7:00 pm.
This makes almost too much sense. Yet I almost don’t want it to happen. Mysterious, infamous survival game Pathologic’s power stems more from its legend (a game of existential brutality that reached for the very stars) than its reality (broken, arduous, appallingly translated); to bring it onto a more conventional plane of reality by remaking it, and in turn by having lots of people play it, could upset its mythology.
On the other hand, Pathologic. It matters.

Stalin vs Martians vs Common Sense
By Alec Meer on November 27th, 2013 at 2:00 pm.
THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION POST.
Oh, how simple things were for PC gaming back in 2008. With the indie invasion yet to begin in earnest, a videogame with a funny name and a techno soundtrack grabbed our attention wholesale, rather than made us roll our eyes or utter an ‘oh, you guys.’ Russian-made comedy RTS Stalin vs Martians! It was the best of jokes, it was the worst of jokes. However you might feel about the depiction of the General secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union as a figure of cartoonish fun, it was certainly the worst of games. And now, like warts or that stray cat with bowel troubles that you once took pity on, it’s come back unbidden.

Wonderful news from the tweet-o-dodecagon today: Wasteland 2‘s beta finally has a release date. After it slipped from October into daaaaaaaates unknown (woooooooooo), inXile CEO Brian Fargo has claimed the Kickstarter darling is only two-and-a-half weeks out. That in mind, I got in touch with Fargo to find out what took so long, how much of the game will be available in the beta, whether it’ll expand over time, and what all of this means for the final game. Read on for the full thing.
Catacomb Kids Will Win You Over Within 55 Seconds
By John Walker on November 27th, 2013 at 12:00 pm.
Here are my thoughts during the first 55 seconds of the Catacomb Kids video:
“Looks nice, but sure looks like yet another pixel roguelike.”
“He’s got a really decent jump. That’s neat.”
“Wait, distractions? There’s more happening here.”
“Oh. Oooohhhh. Oh, okay, yeah, I’m posting about this.
