Krafton CEO allegedly asked ChatGPT to help him find a way out of paying Subnautica 2 devs their bonuses because he wanted to avoid the 'professional embarrassment' of being seen as a 'pushover'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/krafton-ceo-allegedly-asked-chatgpt-to-help-him-find-a-way-out-of-paying-subnautica-2-devs-their-bonuses-because-he-wanted-to-avoid-the-professional-embarrassment-of-being-seen-as-a-pushover/
A pre-trial brief filed by lawyers representing the ousted former heads of Subnautica 2 studio Unknown Worlds alleges that Krafton CEO Changham Kim was "desperate" to avoid paying them the bonuses required by their acquisition contract because of the "professional embarrassment" that would result from the perception that he overpaid for the studio. The filing claims Kim went so far as to consult with AI to figure a way out of paying, but even ChatGPT told him he was probably stuck.

You can't be serious. What in the actual...

Yeah. It would be laughable if it wasn't about a CEO trying to find ways to not pay the money he owes.

7 years after launch and 18 years after Steam, the Epic Games Store will now let you gift games directly to your friends
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/seven-years-after-launch-and-eighteen-years-after-steam-the-epic-games-store-will-now-let-you-gift-games-directly-to-your-friends/
Good news, everyone! A mere seven years since it launched, the Epic Games Store has gifting now! The Fortnite developer announced the new feature in a post on the store, stating that "players can now purchase and send games directly to friends on their Epic friends list."
Users who purchase gifts through Epic's payment system will earn Epic Rewards—which gives customers between 5% and 20% back on Epic purchases. The post also says that "recipients can use their Epic Rewards balance to redeem gifts"—an odd phrasing that makes it sound like you'll need to use Reward points to redeem a gift you've been given. However, in the longer Gift FAQ, Epic clarifies that "you can use your Epic Rewards balance toward a gift purchase" which makes a lot more sense.
As for what you can gift friends on Epic, the answer is most items on the store, but not everything. The exceptions are free games (for obvious reasons) pre-purchase offers, subscriptions, and in-game currency or other consumable items. Anyone who receives a gift on Epic has 14 days to claim it, somewhat shorter than the 30 days allowed by Steam.

I'm not going to complain about improvements, but rather the lack of them: I don't hear very much about improvements to Epic's service, but this one I time do, it's a feature that's only meant to increase sales. It's hard to avoid the impression that Epic doesn't really make any improvements unless they directly contribute to increased sales. Steam, on the other hand, still keeps finding ways to improve the user experience, even if it has no direct benefit to Valve. When I recently played the only game I've ever played on Epic, Alan Wake II, it was hard to not be amazed at how poorly Epic has treated the service and especially the client. It was by far the worst client I've used.

As far as I can see, Epic doesn't even pretend that it cares about its customers at all. It's impossible to ignore the free games, but with the service being this bad, in most cases I'd honestly rather pay for them elsewhere if I was interested in playing them.

Indeed. They've said many times that the store is bad and needs to improve, but they do it so slowly that it's hard to take it seriously.

At this rate, we'll have Half Life 4 before the Epic Store achieves parity with Steam, feature wise.

And the client is even worse. Anyway, I think you're being generous: at this rate, we'll have Half-Life 4 before Epic achieves an actually good user experience. I don't think it's ever going to achieve parity with the current Steam or anything that even resembles it.

ComputerBase's testing doesn't jive with the side by side testing Daniel Owen did with Ray Reconstruction and Ray Regeneration. He gave the edge to Ray Reconstrution but Ray Regenration held up well. It actually provided a more stable image in one particular aspect. For what ever reason the edge of the pool was unstable with Ray Reconstruction but not was fine with Ray Regenaration.

Hopefully df will be the tie breaker but it is nice to see Radeon being competitive in Ray Tracing

Hopefully more games implement Ray Regeneration so there would be a higher sample size to compare from.

I'm hoping for Star Wars Outlaws to get Ray Regeneration, as light splotching in that game is really handled well with nVidia's Ray Reconstruction, and that would be good test.

This RR vs RR will quickly become annoying, since abbreviations are the same.

RRn vs RRa? RRDLSS vs RRFSR?

Despite 'Mixed' Steam reviews and a touch of AI slop, strategy city builder Anno 117: Pax Romana has the best launch in series history
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/city-builder/despite-mixed-steam-reviews-and-a-touch-of-ai-slop-strategy-city-builder-anno-117-pax-romana-has-the-best-launch-in-series-history/
The latest game in the long-running Anno strategy city builder series has had a great launch week—depending on where you're standing, at least. Anno 117: Pax Romana, which released on November 12, has been met with "Mixed" reviews on Steam and has been the target of complaints about the use of AI to create in-game assets.
But, according to Ubisoft, that hasn't stopped the city builder from breaking a few records.
Anno 117: Pax Romana is "the fastest-selling title in the franchise’s 25-year history," Ubisoft said in an email to PC Gamer. Ubisoft also said that with an average of 85 on Metacritic (PC Gamer's Anno 117: Pax Romana review scores it an 80) and a 94% "Recommended" on OpenCritic (with an average score of 84), Anno 117 has become "the highest-rated Anno in the franchise's history."

I credit/blame the 2010s rise of the pay-what-you-want videogame bundle for the fact my Steam library has over a thousand games in it. How many of those have I actually played? Please mind your own business.
These days, videogame bundles and the sites you get them from are just part of the furniture: barely worth noticing unless they happen to cobble together a real collection of bangers. But now things are happening. A new site, bearing the perhaps unfortunate name Digiphile, has been established by ex-Humble Bundle vets. And yes, its first bundle is a real collection of bangers.
The Return of the Immersive Sim bundle features, ah, a bunch of immersive sims. Good ones, too! And possibly even ones you don't already own, which feels like a rarity in the bundleverse.

Fallout 4 Receives Huge Fan Expansion Adding 20+ Locations, New Radio Station, and Classic Fallout Mechanics
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/fallout-4-receives-huge-fan-expansion-adding-20-locations-new-radio-station-and-classic-fallout-mechanics

Half-Life Black Mesa: Blue Shift Remake Gets Caretaking Update
https://www.dsogaming.com/pc-performance-analyses/half-life-black-mesa-blue-shift-remake-gets-caretaking-update
HECU Collective has released the Caretaking Update for its remake of Half-Life: Blue Shift in the Black Mesa Engine, Black Mesa: Blue Shift. This update brings important fixes, tweaks, and changes to this fan remake. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
Half-Life: Blue Shift was an expansion of Half-Life that came out in 2001. Developed by Gearbox, this expansion allowed you to experience the events of Half-Life from the perspective of Barney Calhoun.
In Black Mesa: Blue Shift, players will relive the Black Mesa Incident as Gordon Freeman’s best friend, Barney Calhoun. This fan remake currently has the first five chapters of Blue Shift. These chapters are Living Quarters Outbound, Insecurity, Duty Calls, Captive Freight, and Focal Point.
It’s been almost a year since the release of Chapter 5. During this time, the modding team has been working on completing the next chapter, Power Struggle. Still, they felt the need to also release an update so that they could further enhance Chapter 5.
So, Focal Point will now be filled with various audio recordings left behind by the pioneers of the Borderworld. This will expand the story behind the early Xen expeditions. It will also reveal how everything went terribly wrong.
The team has also added a new scene at the end of Focal Point to smoothly transition into Power Struggle. There are new voice lines, animations, and small details throughout every chapter. HECU Collective has improved the lighting, performance, combat, and overall atmosphere in Focal Point. They also added new background animals, interactive objects, and other small details to make the world feel more alive. On top of that, they made several optimizations to physics, lighting, and general map performance.

Mass Effect 3 redeemed to glory as modder puts its ME1-style elevator back in
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/mass-effect/mass-effect-3-redeemed-to-glory-as-modder-puts-its-me1-style-elevator-back-in/
Nightmarishly, it's possible there are people reading this who were either unborn or incapable of forming long-term memories when Mass Effect 3 released in 2012. If that's you: consider it a blessing, because my chief recollection of that era is everyone being very upset about it on the internet.
What were they upset about? Well, they said it was a lot of stuff to do with the endings and your choices across the series not mattering that much. I know better, though. In their heart of hearts, in the deep, festering reaches of their collective subconscious, the gamers yearned for the lifts. The first Mass Effect was beloved. It was also a game about standing in a lot of lifts. These things are not unconnected.
Now, a doughty modder has restored the third Mass Effect (in its Legendary Edition form) to the pristine condition of its predecessor. Glorious Elevators (LE3) comes from Linkenski, who also put in the work to restore the original setup for ME1's Saren fights to the Legendary Edition and created, ah, Miranda Buttfarts Restored.
"Glorious Elevators return to Mass Effect beyond the first game," declares our modder. "Originally Mass Effect 3 actually had a working elevator right up until its finaling phases. Because the game was stuck on PS3/Xbox 360 as the lowest common denominator at the time, they couldn't optimize the game any further and ended up with load times just as notorious as Mass Effect 1 was originally known for."
But in 2025 my PC vibrates with parts potent enough to wound god, and there's no need to cut out these little additions. So Glorious Elevators sticks them back in. Using the lift in the Normandy? Rather than a humdrum load screen, you will whirr your way up or down in (something resembling) real time. I know. I'm excited too.
It is, I admit, a pretty minor thing, but I find this kind of obsessive, detail-oriented modding rather admirable and more than a little fascinating. Plus, I hear tell it's a banger. "It's better than the elevators in ME1, and adds to ME3's signature seamlessness and slickness," boasts Linkenski. "That's why this is a must-have!"
>> While the article has a couple screenshots, none of them are from the mod.

The second part of the Wednesday gaming news:

When Assassin's Creed's infamously dull main character was finally killed off, voice actor Nolan North didn't find out until a fan told him about it on Twitter
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/assassins-creed/when-assassins-creeds-infamously-dull-main-character-was-finally-killed-off-voice-actor-nolan-north-didnt-find-out-until-a-fan-told-him-about-it-on-twitter/
Desmond Miles? Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Assassin's Creed's original protagonist stood at the centre of the series' story from the 2007 original to Assassin's Creed 3. I remember him being pretty roundly mocked at the time, and wasn't much of a fan myself. This was partly because players only controlled him during the series' divisive Animus sections, where the games would yank you of their gripping historical settings to wander around sterile laboratories while NPCs yammered exposition at you.
But it was also because poor Desmond had all the charisma of a boiled cauliflower. This despite being voiced by Nolan North, best known for playing Uncharted's effortlessly charming thief Nathan Drake. Ubisoft tried to spice up Desmond's adventures in later games, but never really achieved this, ultimately opting to bump off Desmond in Assassin's Creed 3. Apparently, this came as a surprise to North, who didn't find out that Desmond was dead until a fan told him on Twitter.

Overwatch 2's newest hero has roots in one of the best PvE missions I played 7 years ago
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/overwatch-2s-newest-hero-has-roots-in-one-of-the-best-pve-missions-i-played-7-years-ago/
Overwatch 2 has finally confirmed who Hero 45 is going to be, and the statue in Stadium's Colosseo map was right: the next hero will be a female gladiator called Vendetta who goes by the name of La Lupa, The Wolf.
(...)
But the most interesting aspect of this hero was her brief flashback midway through the reveal trailer. Reflecting on all that her deceased father taught her, she ends with how it's important not to underestimate an opponent, as we see her dad, Antonio, fall out of a window, after being shot in the head.
This isn't just a tragic backstory wedged in to add some weight to the new hero, but a callback to one of my favourite PvE missions from seven years ago. Way back when in 2018 (I can't believe this is seven years ago now), Overwatch launched the second Overwatch Archives event, Overwatch Retribution, which saw Genji, Moira, Cassidy, and Reaper fight through omnic grunts to find a gangster—Antonio.

Over a decade ago, when Minecraft studio Mojang was still a plucky independent outfit enjoying the fruits of developing one of the most successful games of all time, it unsurprisingly had a bunch of suitors. And one of them was Bobby Kotick.

The developer of 80 Days was once invited to pitch a Doctor Who game, but never heard back from the BBC afterward: 'Technically, we're still waiting for a reply'

80 Days may still be the best-known game from narrative maestros Inkle Studios. But the developer's most ambitious game is probably Heaven's Vault, a sci-fi archaeological adventure about piecing together an ancient alien language.
Phillippa Warr gave it an impressive score of 88 in PC Gamer's Heaven's Vault Review, stating it "does a beautiful job of letting you unlock a language, and thus a dialogue of sorts, with the past, via a wonderfully engaging protagonist."
Yet had Inkle's original plans come to fruition, Heaven's Vault would have been quite a different experience. This was revealed in a Bluesky post by Inkle's narrative director and writer Jon Ingold, where he stated that "Heaven's Vault started out as a Doctor Who game".

Valve accidentally steps on the make-up deal it offered to the indie game whose 2024 release was ruined by a Steam bug: 'I really get the feeling that Planet Centauri is cursed'

You may recall the sad case of Planet Centauri, an indie 2D sandbox game that spent more than a decade in development, amassed well over 130,000 wishlists, and then struggled to gain traction when the 1.0 release happened earlier this year because a bug in Steam prevented the it's out announcement email from being sent to people who'd added it to their wishlists. Ouch.
Honest mistake, though, and to Valve's credit it offered developer Permadeath a small makeup: an opportunity to spotlight Planet Centauri as one of Steam's Daily Deals, "as a way to help make up for lost visibility."
The studio has since moved on to other things, because there really wasn't any choice in the matter, but despite some misgivings it did eventually decide to take Valve up on the offer. So, as reported by Polygon, a little over a month ago Permadeath signed up for the Daily Deal spotlight on one of the dates offered by Valve: November 12.

In the most recent update, which brings it to version 1.4, the sun vacuum from the console versions finally arrives on PC—as do more hotkeys, bug fixes, and Remote Play Together.

Megabonk developer withdraws from 'Best Debut Indie Game' nomination at The Game Awards for a pretty good reason: 'It's not my debut game'

The Vampire Survivors-like Megabonk is one of the big indie hits of the year, selling a million copies in just two weeks and earning a nomination for best debut indie game in The Game Awards 2025. That sort of exposure is a big deal, especially for a small indie release, but developer vedinad said they're withdrawing from the show for one simple and very understandable reason: Megabonk isn't actually their first game.
>> An honest person? In 2025? Inconceivable!

Right after 'saving' Hytale from 7 years of development limbo, its new owner releases 16 minutes of 'raw and broken' gameplay footage to 'break the curse once and for all'

Hytale, up until this point, has been one of gaming's biggest messes. Announced back in 2018, Hytale looked like it was about to waltz in and start tidily eating Mojang's lunch. Riot even saw promise in the studio, acquiring it in 2020. Seven years later, scope creep and an apparently ill-advised engine rewrite caused Riot to call curtains on the whole thing.
(...)
What looked like the executioner's axe for ol' Hytale, though, might well have been its salvation. Riot sold the game's rights back to Simon Collins-Laflamme, the studio's original co-founder, passing the torch from Noxy back to Laflamme to go "back to the original vision for Hytale."
You might think that "original vision" would take some considerable time to cobble together, but it turns out, er, no. There's enough meat on this bone for a 16-minute gameplay video to just… be released. As the description states, "No bells or whistles. Just the game as it is. Raw and broken, but still beautiful."
>> Smart, but it also kind of feels a bit like a desperate move to gain awareness and, maybe, an investor.

Borderlands 4 has a 'very stupid' glitch that lets you unlock a character's most powerful abilities before refunding all your skill points, but don't expect it to be around long as Gearbox says 'we're on it'

Borderlands 4 players have already discovered some ridiculous glitches and exploits, like its overpowered crit knives that were subsequently nerfed, and a bugged interaction that caused "total existence failure" for endgame bosses. But the latest glitch discovered in Gearbox's looter shooter might just take the cake, allowing players to unlock a character's most powerful abilities and then refund nearly all of their skill points.

The best way to level your horse in Disney Dreamlight Valley isn't through daily gifts, it's by creating a shoddy obstacle course
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/life-sim/the-best-way-to-level-your-horse-in-disney-dreamlight-valley-isnt-through-daily-gifts-its-by-creating-a-shoddy-obstacle-course/
Levelling your horse in Disney Dreamlight Valley's Wishblossom Ranch DLC is essential when it comes to progressing through the story, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Much like levelling your friendship with the villagers, you can do this by giving up to three gifts per day, spending quality time with them, or brushing and petting them. Even then, you'll only get an XP boost once a day from these actions, and waiting until the next day when you want to head to the next area can feel like waiting a lifetime.
When you hit level 2 with your horses, you can also assign skills to each pony like mining rocks, digging holes, and harvesting or watering crops which does give you another avenue for XP farming. But, as much as I love how efficient it is to mine resources and farm now you don't have to deplete your own stamina, it's by no means a fast process. Luckily, outside of gift giving and quality time, you can also work on your bond by riding them around and jumping over obstacles, but this process is still pretty arduous. Fortunately, I've found a hidden spot that, with a bit of decorating, can be a vital tool in levelling your horses, and make things feel much more efficient.

WoW's proposed transmog overhaul is 1 step forward, 2 steps back, and has Azeroth's fashionistas rioting: 'Blizzard truly are the masters at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory'

World of Warcraft: Midnight has a huge task ahead of it—fixing the arms race of AddOns by nixing combat-related mods (and thus having to provide its own offerings), installing Player Housing for the first time and, relevant to the problems I'm about to get into, overhauling the transmog system.

Guild Wars celebrates 20 years with a 'Reforged' overhaul that's free for existing players, and offers the whole shebang to newbies for $20: 'It was a good time to give it a refresh'

Guild Wars released in 2005 and, even in the wake of the all-conquering World of Warcraft, offered an MMO experience that was distinct and freeform enough that, 20 years later, you'll still find people saying it's the best MMO around. OK, these days they're probably more likely to be on-board with the superb sequel, but still.
With that 20th anniversary in mind, developer ArenaNet has announced the most substantial overhaul in the game's history: December 3 will see the launch of Guild Wars Reforged, a visual and gameplay overhaul for the venerable monster-bothering quest-em-up.
