Itch.io latest in platforms pressured by credit card companies, as well as activist group Collective Shout—which has successfully caught an award-winning indie (and more) in the crossfire
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/itch-io-latest-in-platforms-pressured-by-credit-card-companies-as-well-as-activist-group-collective-shout-which-has-successfully-caught-an-award-winning-indie-and-more-in-the-crossfire/
Itch.io, a platform that hosts and sells videogames (particularly popular in the indie dev industry) has been the next in a line of videogame distributors to fall to a recent sweep of puritan policies by credit card companies, designed to limit the sale of NSFW content. For those not in the know, credit card processors such as Visa and Mastercard have pressured Steam into removing NSFW content from its platform.
In the interest of fairness, there are some logical reasons for this—adult content is often used for scams and chargebacks, which costs banks money, and some adult websites have been caught displaying content featuring minors, such as PornHub: Motivating processors to drop the platforms entirely.
The issue, however, comes from any company's complete disinterest in the often difficult (and expensive) work of applying nuance—it's cheaper and less time-consuming to go scorched earth, consequences be damned, as was the case with Valve and, now, Itch.io.

Palworld got a 60GB 4K Texture Pack that overhauls all textures
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/palworld-got-a-60gb-4k-texture-pack-that-overhauls-all-textures
Palworld fans, here is something for you today. Modder Canarious has just released a 60GB 4K Texture Pack that overhauls all of the game’s textures.
The modder used AI tools to improve the original game’s textures. Because of this, the new textures still look like the old ones, just in higher quality. Some players might not like that. However, this kind of HD Texture Pack is a good example of when using AI tools makes sense.
This HD Texture Pack comes in two versions. The first version will overhaul all the textures and normal maps to 4K. The second version upscales the diffusion textures to 8K and the normal maps to 4K.
>> The article has some screenshots to show the improvements of this mod.

Thursday gaming news, part two:

'There's a strong desire on our side to make sure that our games are preserved': Obsidian promises your Grounded 1 save files won't be compost after Grounded 2 comes out
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/survival-crafting/theres-a-strong-desire-on-our-side-to-make-sure-that-our-games-are-preserved-obsidian-promises-your-grounded-1-save-files-wont-be-compost-after-grounded-2-comes-out/
Grounded 2 is on its way, with early access kicking off later this month—which, if you've been slighted by sequels before, might have you wringing your keyboards over what's going to happen to Grounded 1. Well, don't tear up your mechanicals just yet. Executive producer Marcus Morgan at Obsidian wants to put your fears at ease.

Some gamers are angry that Battlefield 6 is likely going to require Secure Boot but most shouldn't have any issues at all
https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/some-gamers-are-angry-that-battlefield-6-is-likely-going-to-require-secure-boot-but-most-shouldnt-have-any-issues-at-all/
Battlefield 6 is seeming pretty close to fully brewed, judging by recent stirrings, but if you're a bit of a techy tinkerer you might be disappointed to hear that it seems the game will require you have Secure Boot enabled to play.
As brought to my attention by an X post from Pirat_Nation, an EA rep on the Battlefield Discord server responded to the question, "Will battlefield 6 have the same secure boot s***" with, "Yes, we're currently running Secure Boot for Battlefield Labs."

Julian LeFay, a programmer and engineer with a storied games industry career, has died at the age of 59 years old. The news was announced by OnceLost Games, a company LeFay co-founded, following last week's news that he would be retiring "to live his final moments surrounded by his loved ones."

23 years after launch, Final Fantasy 11 is suspending character creation on its most popular server as it buckles beneath the weight of player congestion
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/mmo/23-years-after-launch-final-fantasy-11-is-suspending-character-creation-on-its-most-popular-server-as-it-buckles-beneath-the-weight-of-player-congestion/
I played Final Fantasy 11 for the first time in 2024 after an episode of the Abnormal Mapping podcast poisoned me with brainworms hungry for an MMO that, since its launch in 2002, has been left largely untouched by the genre conventions World of Warcraft would formalize in the years that followed. It's like an interactive museum of an alternate MMO history, and there's apparently no shortage of other players drawn in by that siren call.
More than two decades after FF11's launch, Square Enix has halted new character creation on its most popular server because it's attracting more players than it can handle (via Vice). In a news post on the FF11 website, producer and director Yoji Fujito announced "measures that will be implemented to address congestion on the Asura World."

Microsoft backs away from $80 games, drops The Outer Worlds 2 price to $70 'in line with current market conditions'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/the-outer-worlds-2-will-no-longer-cost-usd80-as-microsoft-backs-away-from-plans-to-follow-nintendos-lead/
When asked how it could justify an $80 price tag for upcoming RPG The Outer Worlds 2, developer Obsidian had a sympathetic response: Ask Microsoft.
Ask we all did, and it seems the Xbox overlords eventually agreed with the public's bafflement—or at least didn't like the looks of The Outer Worlds 2's pre-order numbers—because Obsidian announced today that the price will now be $70.

Oh, hell yeah—this indie dev is making a Valkyria Chronicles-inspired mecha game
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/oh-hell-yeah-this-indie-dev-is-making-a-valkyria-chronicles-inspired-mecha-game/
Sometimes the world delivers you a bit of proof that you've done a good job cultivating your online environment. For me, that proof was seeing RPG Site post on Bluesky about Ironwing Valiant: Record of Astera—a Valkyria Chronicles-inspired mecha action game from indie studio Tiger Team—and watching as a bunch of sickos near-instantly flooded my timeline with a unified, resounding "hell yeah."

At long last and 'with gracious permission from Valve,' Garry's Mod now contains 'most of Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 Episodic content' even if you don't own those games
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/at-long-last-and-with-gracious-permission-from-valve-garrys-mod-now-contains-most-of-counter-strike-source-and-half-life-2-episodic-content-even-if-you-dont-own-those-games/
So long, pink checkerboards that represent missing textures! Adiós, pitch-black skies that signify an absent skybox! Don't let the door hit you on the way out, enormous 3D model that says ERROR where a car should be!
Those have been common sights for users of Garry's Mod for, oh, let's see… 20 years or so? And one of the biggest culprits for those missing textures and models is that players didn't own the games that those assets were pulled from: Half-Life 2's episodic entries and Counter-Strike: Source. You could join a community map that used assets from those games, but if you didn't own them, you would get an eyeful of pink and black or that big ol' ERROR sign.
Hurrah, then, because the latest update for Garry's Mod solves that problem in a way that doesn't require players buying and installing extra Valve games.

Supergiant swears Hades 2's new update is the last one before it leaves early access and releases in full
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/supergiant-swears-hades-2s-new-update-is-the-last-one-before-it-leaves-early-access-and-releases-in-full/
Someone stop Supergiant from adding more stuff into Hades 2. The sequel to one the best action RPGs of all time was already overflowing with all kinds of new characters, weapons, and bosses when it launched in early access last year. And now, several updates later, Supergiant keeps messing with it as it nears the point at which it can call it finished.
Supergiant said the update earlier this month would "likely be our final patch before our v1.0 launch," but it turns out it had a little more work to do. Today's patch 11 update will be the final one before launch—for real this time.

That seems like a... not very bright move from Intel. As much as I dislike AMD's way of handling it, launching the regular processors before the X3D parts guarantees that the regular parts will sell more units. Doing it the other way around, like Intel, will make the ones with less cache less appealing.

Huge news there. Those companies tend to move by inertia and they keep using what they know and are familiar with. That most of them now AMD insted of Intel is big, and it will have long lasting consequences.

Some games can be brutal on the CPU side. Stellaris and other strategy games with hunderds or thousands of units can bring any CPU on its knees as well.

Who knows, if rumors are true and next gen we get a 6GHz 10800X3D with 12 cores and lots more of cache, it can make the GPU the limiting factor once again. But it won't be great to use at Summer either.

You would be surprised how many games will use all 16 cores/32 threads on my CPU, but RTS (And even TBS like Civilization!) games are notoriously impactful on PC. (Except StarCraft 2)

We do need to see non-RTS developers push their games beyond 8 cores though, because hardware is so far ahead of software it's pretty ridiculous.
My 5950X is 5 years old and there isn't a single game that isn't playable, I would hang onto it for another 5 years if it wasn't for the fact other stuff I do needs more.

With that, new hardware has started rocking up at home, but I don't fly back until the 5th of August... My Intel ARC notebook is overdue for an upgrade as well, but the Geforce RTX laptops are hot garbage this year with the 5070 only having 8GB of VRAM.

Yeah, those extra calculations for each unit put CPUs to their limits. It's a shame so few sites/reviewers use those kinds of games in their reviews.

https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/this-mod-for-oblivion-remastered-overhauls-hundreds-of-dialogue-lines-to-feel-more-like-real-conversations
Modder chrisgreely1999 has released a cool new mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. This mod changes hundreds of lines of dialogue to sound more like real conversations. The original game didn’t have the best dialogue. So, if you thought it was kind of mediocre, this mod might be perfect for you.
This mod is based on the Realistic Player Dialogue Overhaul by Publick Gamer for the original Oblivion game. It makes conversations between the player and NPCs sound more natural. For example, instead of just saying “Rumors,” your character will now say, “Heard any good rumors lately?” This new version adds even more changes to hundreds of lines of dialogue. It improves the base game, the Shivering Isles expansion, Knights of the Nine, and all the official add-ons. Basically, it updates every single one-word player topic in the game to a full sentence.
You can go ahead and download the mod from this link. Do note that you’ll need the original Realistic Player Dialogue Overhaul Mods. You’ll also need NL-Tag Remover. So, make sure to read its installation guide.

As we've discussed quite a bit on this very site, Final Fantasy 14 is in a weird spot with its content—a sluggish patch cycle has paired terribly with a somewhat scattershot design philosophy that's left casual-to-midcore players feeling underwhelmed, and hardcore players with precious little to do in between raids.
(...)
In many ways, it was kinda a raid for no-one—hard enough to put your average joe off, but too difficult to join as an organised group. While director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) and co. are making changes to it, which have been further announced in today's Live Letter, there's also been another promising sign that the MMO is slowly, but surely on the mend.

The only way to defeat long queue times is spend them doing something productive with your life, like beating Minecraft.

Half-Life 2 just got a patch that fixes a progress-blocking teleporter bug and makes a train easier to race
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/half-life-2-just-got-a-patch-that-fixes-a-progress-blocking-teleporter-bug-and-makes-a-train-easier-to-race/
Last year, Valve brought the original development team back together for a 20th anniversary Half-Life 2 update. It integrated the post-launch episodes, added a new developer commentary track, brought in Steam Workshop support, and added a heap of map and gameplay updates. All of which was great—except for one progress-blocking bug it introduced to the Entanglement level.
Near the end of Entanglement there's a setpiece where you use turrets to defend Alyx while she resets a teleporter, then jump in with her to escape the waves of Combine soldiers flooding in. Which worked fine, until the anniversary edition. Possibly as a result of said update fixing an existing bug that could make the teleporter leave early, a new bug meant that sometimes you wouldn't be able to enter the teleporter after Alyx—and if you raced to get inside first, she wouldn't follow you.
Inventive solutions to this problem involved jumping onto Alyx's head, perhaps by dropping a grenade at your feet or leaping off one of the turrets. Now, you won't have to do either—or open up the console and mess around with cheats—as the latest patch should have the sequence working as intended once again. It also prevents enemies from being able to shoot through some of the level's walls.

Assassin's Creed Shadows has its summer roadmap and, with all due respect, how did it take this long to get a fast-forward time option?

I enjoyed my time with Assassin's Creed Shadows but, much like I did with Valhalla, I had my fill long before I ever reached credits. These games are too big, and their content becomes familiar too quickly, for me to get all the way through them without a break of at least a year or two between sessions.
So it's with some alarm that I report that Ubisoft says the game is due to get its New Game Plus update this July 29, for anyone who made it all the way through everything it has to offer and is still voracious for more. I am very glad you are getting what you want. Also, you scare me.

And these are the weekend deals at Steam (GOG has no new promos):

Happy 40th Anniversary, Commodore Amiga!

Speaking of Commodore, fans are reviving the brand right now, with the original right's holders greenlighting the project:

First thing they did was making this C64 an official Commodore product:

A true modern C64 with lots of RGB

Now waiting for some Amiga revivals too... just hopefully not as rainbow-spewing as that one.
