So Intels B580 just might have free reign but lets see if Radeon has something different up their sleeve. GeForce RTX 5070 Ti reportedly features 16GB GDDR7 memory and GB203-300 GPU While good for the 5070 Ti as 4070 Ti originally launched with 12GB which was terrible for it's price, this likely means the 5070 will continue to have 12GB which is really lame. Ideally 5070 Ti and 5070 should have 16GB while 5060 Ti and 5060 should have 12GB. But alas, Nvidia likes their upsell. |
So in short, apart from the 5090 going to 32GB, all the card retain the same memory config as their current-gen (Super) predecessors. 5060 with 8GB is basically Waste Of Sand™, the 5050 not much better and the 5070 with it's higher performance will soon run into the same problem. The two best products apart from the hideously expensive 5090 seem to be both Ti cards to me.

I see. Your 4060's seem notably lower than what I'm able to find them for here. |
The 4060 and 4060Ti dropped 30-40€ over the last couple weeks. Probably NVidia still has too many in stock and needs to get rid of them to make space for their new 50 series cards.

I haven't decided fully yet, I was think of going with a newer AMD CPU, possibly the 9800x3d, though as I game in 4k something like a 7700x would suffice.
As for the GPU, I'm waiting for more info on the upcoming models before deciding. A 4080super or similar is probably the minimum I go for considering I already have a 3070. I'm not too enthusiastic about the Nvidia 5000s, the price will likely be madness, and the VRAM on anything other than 5090 is worrying if spec rumors are to be believed. I suppose budget isn't a limitation for me, but just because I can spend a bunch of cash on a GPU, doesn't mean I will.
AMD GPUs could be an interesting option if they're close to a 4080 in performance for a significantly reduced price. Alternatively, I could always stick with my 3070 for a bit.
Either way, it will be nice modernising my PC, as most of the components are at least 10 years old.

That sounds weird then, with the power draw. Starts at 29:52 I'll look into how difficult it is to replace a fan myself in case I get that issue again. |
It's strange, yes. ASRock uses a custom board the layout of the parts may make it a bit more efficient. Or maybe it's just the silicon lottery as they say, and the GPU chip in the ASRock card is of better quality and needs less power to get the same results. Who knows.
Replacing the fan won't be easy, but it won't hurt looking for ways to do it.

I really hope this isn't the start of a new spam trend.
It's already one thing that there's plenty of souls-likes in the RPG/actions/Indie spaces, it's another to see them spreading into the FPS genre. I say this because each time I see this pattern emerge, my target type of game gets ignored, Souls-like fans flock to said game, game gets popular and then we start to see a spam of games within that genre happening, while I continue to be ignored.
It's like when Souls fans were originally ignored (before it become popular and a phenomenon, but with me it feels like a constant record on repeat, where what I like doesn't get made or gets made less, while Souls-like fans become the normies of every given genre and get fed well. I was already enjoying Doom coming back, but no one's really giving that a shot in the competitive arm elsewhere (Doom is Doom, but the days of making Doom clones seems over?)

If the rumors are true, then the 8800 should be in that ballpark. The price is a big unknown so far, but like I said above, it looks like both the 7900XT and the 7800XT are dropping in price, probably to make space for the new 8800 in the line-up. As for the price, I'm expecting something like $599, but so far there hasn't been any official prices for AMD's next-gen cards.

The problem is that while Nvidia doesn't wait for it's competition to catch up, they also do not leave space for their existing customers whenever they start releasing new tech.
By that I mean their level of support for previous cards. This new "neural rendering" tech is likely going to see support for the 4000 series at best, everyone else before that is going to get dropped like a rock, and Nvidia so far seems totally fine with that, even encourages that mentality (because so far they've shown little regard to their previous gens, while AMD at least came to support us with FSR being universally usable on even GTX 1000 series, which is a nice gesture nonetheless).
Also I feel like they have these advancements stored for rainy days, because we all know how tech booms happen and Nvidia now seemingly has one for each gen now, making them appear like they are lightyears ahead, when really they would have had these already down and crafted for when new gens come out (because it's also super convenient how these new techs mean little support for previous gens).
I still don't like this whole "AI will run everything on our cards" mantra of theirs though. AI is a tool, not an outright replacement pipeline. One day mankind's gonna realise that and they'll be left mortified, but hey, I'm more than happy to stand there and watch ppl with those kinds of facing to tell them "you did this, just remember that" (because let's face it, ppl badly want a version of Skynet, but when faced with reality they will be horrified in being told by an AI that they are now obsolete and factually no longer needed).

Tuesday news, part two:
Fallout co-creator Tim Cain hasn't made sequels to his other cult classic RPGs because they didn't sell well: 'You should have bought it'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/fallout-co-creator-tim-cain-hasnt-made-sequels-to-his-other-cult-classic-rpgs-because-they-didnt-sell-well-you-should-have-bought-it/
Tim Cain's storied career includes a bunch of what are likely some of your favourite RPGs, including the first two Fallouts and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. Some of the games he worked on became huge mainstream successes, while others—particularly the games developed by his RPG studio, Troika—became cult classics. And people are always asking him why he never made follow-ups to the latter.
"People regularly tell me, 'Why don't you make another game like Bloodlines,' or, 'Why don't you make a sequel to Arcanum?'" he says. "They're like, 'You made a cult classic.' And I'm like, 'The problem is the cult part.' They didn't sell well enough for a publisher to go, 'Oh yeah, we definitely gotta jump on a sequel to that.' So it's weird to hear people say to me, in some cases decades later, 'You should have done another one.' It's like, 'You should have bought it.'"

Black Myth: Wukong won a couple trophies at The Game Awards last week, including Best Action Game and the fan-voted Players Voice. But it did not win the big prize—Game of the Year—and Feng Ji, the CEO of developer Game Science, seems more bummed about the whole thing that you might expect.

'The guns weren't doing what it says on the box': Johan Pilestedt reflects on Helldivers 2 balance changes that disrupted the positive vibes

When I think about the first year of Helldivers 2, I think about the 150+ hours of fun I had closing bug holes and scrapping Automatons with friends, and how Arrowhead put the "live" back in live service by never telling us what was coming next. But if you stuck with Helldivers 2 throughout 2024, you'll also remember a rough patch: Arrowhead implemented a streak of controversial balancing changes that ruffled the feathers of the game's loudest fans.
(...)
Calm feedback was eventually outpaced by frustration, review bombing, and outright toxicity toward Arrowhead developers for not tweaking the numbers the way some players would prefer. In a recent interview with PC Gamer before the surprise Omens of Tyranny update, chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt reflected on this turbulent chapter of Helldivers' debut year.

Borderlands 4 will cut back on 'toilet humor,' says Gearbox: 'If the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch I'm gonna cry real tears'

Everything we've seen about Borderlands 4 so far, which to be fair isn't much, very strongly suggests that yes, it will be a Borderlands game. But some things are changing. As we said when the first Borderlands 4 trailer dropped at The Game Awards last week, the art style that made the previous games so visually distinctive appears to be fading into the background. And earlier today, narrative director Sam Winkler said on X that the "toilet humor" so prevalent in Borderlands 3 is going to be dialed back too—pretty dramatically, from the sounds of it.
Marvel Rivals is 'not considering' a role queue, no matter how annoying it is to get rinsed on a team of 6 duelists
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/marvel-rivals-is-not-considering-a-role-queue-no-matter-how-annoying-it-is-to-get-rinsed-on-a-team-of-6-duelists/
Marvel Rivals has a problem, one that every hero shooter since the invention of the concept—and every MOBA before it—has suffered from: People keep picking DPS. You rock into a game, expecting a balanced team makeup, but alas. Your crew is composed of Hawkeye, Black Widow, Magik, Psylocke, Spider-Man, and a Punisher. You proceed to die violently.
This has, predictably, led to cries for a role-based queue, where players have to commit to playing one of the three roles—Vanguard, Strategist, or Duelist—before entering a game. In theory, this karmically balances things. Sure, you can play your favourite DPS hero, but to do so you'll need to endure long queue times. Meanwhile, your tanks and healers get the VIP treatment and, crucially, all games are balanced as a result.
Unfortunately for these people, Marvel Rivals isn't getting a role queue any time soon, according to the developers in an interview with Dot Esports. Guangyun Chen, the game's creative director, says that "right now, we’re not considering a role queue. The team’s goal is to offer a wider variety of team composition through team-up skills and their own designs, to let people play their Marvel superheroes rather than limiting players to choosing a role."
Tiny Glade's winter update finally lets me turn my castles into that scene from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/city-builder/tiny-glades-winter-update-finally-lets-me-turn-my-castles-into-that-scene-from-national-lampoons-christmas-vacation/
Even though castle doodling simulator Tiny Glade has a lot of flexibility in letting your imagination run wild, the game still features a few restrictions that can affect your builds. A prime example of this is the limitation on how many lights you can adorn your buildings with. Usually, you're stuck with a measly 32, but thanks to a new winter update, now you can add enough lights to make your builds visible from space.
Path of Exile 2 passive skill respecs will no longer cost Scrooge McDuck levels of gold
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/path-of-exile-2-passive-skill-respecs-will-no-longer-cost-scrooge-mcduck-levels-of-gold/
Grinding Gear Games continues to tinker away on Path of Exile 2, fixing some of the "key pain points" of the otherwise superb early access ARPG. Full patch notes for the latest set of upcoming changes are on their way, but in the meantime the developer has revealed some of the major improvements heading to Wraeclast—not least of which is a change to passive skill respecs.
Marvel Rivals is getting its first seasonal event soon, which'll let you run around as everyone's favourite land shark to play some legally-distinct Splatoon
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/third-person-shooter/marvel-rivals-is-getting-its-first-seasonal-event-soon-whichll-let-you-run-around-as-everyones-favourite-land-shark-to-play-some-legally-distinct-splatoon/
Marvel Rivals is off to a solid start, considering how many live service shooters have failed to hit the mark this year—and it's aimed to keep that momentum with its first seasonal event starting December 20, dubbed the "Marvel Rivals Winter Celebration", for which Netease released a trailer earlier today and, hold on, wait a minute, is that baby shark Splatoon?
