There would be no legal basis whatsoever for suing them in that case. DMCA and similar access control laws are pretty clear and have been validated by decades of jurisprudence and international treaties.

You might as well be trying to sue them because your disc copy broke and you want another because you think you bought a forever license. Nope.

A regular person wouldnt be the one who would sue them, it would be Valve because to release games on Steam, I'm sure there would be contractual agreements placed upon where a company cant just randomly revoke a game from large amount of customers because they feel like it.

Companies can freely delist, not revoke.

Delist =/= Revoke

If you think Sony will go unscathed legally revoking thousands of keys for whatever random reason, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Digital licenses are different from physical licenses.

Suing for a physical licensed product wont be taken seriously in court because of multiple conditions that can lead to that product being damaged, disc rot, whether its overuse, neglect, etc

Digital licenses just cant break randomly because its not a physical product.

Digital licenses can only become inaccessible (i.e. 3DS eshop/WiiU eshop/xbox 360 marketplace keys and the platforms that run those services stop working) or if the key is fraudulent, there's no expiration date or decay like a physical product.

There has not been any case where a key was randomly revoked just because a company deemed it that they could do that. I'm pretty sure there are licensed agreements between Valve and any publisher that they just cant revoke the license like I mentioned above.

Edit: DMCA indicates the ability to send a take down for infringment/theft - if they released their games on Steam, EGS, etc to begin with, how can they use that as a argument in court, they would get torn apart by Valve, Epic Games, etc.

Anyways, we can go around in circles talking about this. Until something like this actually happens from not just Sony but any other third party (i.e. Say for an example Square Enix decides to revoke keys from Xbox store or Capcom deciding to revoke keys of their games from the Switch) , I dont see this as an issue to worry about.

Developers/publishers can remove their games from the virtual store shelves.

But I doubt that they are allowed to remove sold licenses from Steam libraries (without refunding the money to the customers).

They can be revoked at any time for any reason. Obviously, if that started to happen en masse people would lose faith in the entire system of digital videogame content distribution, hence it seldom is applied, but there are examples.

Why are you so sure about that? They have a contract with Valve for putting games on Steam, there are a lot of rules.

https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/store/retire_app

So Sony CAN'T delete their games out of the Steam libraries of customers. Only Valve can... but why should they?

Sony can do that shit on its own platform (f.e. the removal of P.T.), but not on other platforms.

Additional to that, if Sony just makes their games unplayable with a "patch", Valve has the right to fully refund the customers for that (and get the money back from Sony).

Fallout: London Patch 1.02 Released With Over 300 Fixes
https://www.dsogaming.com/patches/fallout-london-patch-1-02-released-with-over-300-fixes/
Team FOLON has released Title Update 1.02 for its DLC-sized fan expansion mod for Fallout 4, Fallout: London. According to the changelog, Patch 1.02 comes with over 300 fixes, tweaks and changes. So, let’s take a closer look at it.
Patch 1.02 removes broken LOD clip volumes across the board. This should fix save corruption/save file issues in Islington world, Dump world, IWM World and St pauls world. However, this requires a rework of the LOD in these worldspace. Moreover, it will regenerate Previs and Precombines. This should fix various random/repeatable crashes and previsibility issues.
It’s also worth noting that this update brings over one hundred mesh fixes. Players can expect various improvements to meshes to increase performance and fix precombine crashes. Additionally, they can expect fixes to various collision meshes which will improve gameplay and fix potential crashes.
As said, the amount of fixes is huge. So I won’t waste any more of your time. Fallout: London will automatically update itself to the latest version. Below you can also find its complete changelog, as well as its latest trailer.

This DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO Mod brings to the game 100 tracks from the DB, DBZ and DBGT movies
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/this-dragon-ball-sparking-zero-mod-brings-to-the-game-100-tracks-from-the-db-dbz-and-dbgt-movies/
Dragon Ball fans, here is something for you today. Modder ‘DaisukeFlo’ has released a mod for DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO that brings to it around 100 tracks from the DB, DBZ and DBGT movies.
To be more precise, this mod packs music tracks from the DB, DBZ and DBGT movies, as well as some from Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Kai. In short, this is a must-have mod for all PC players.
Now the good news here is that this mod will not affect the official anime DLC packs. Plus, it does not contain any tracks found in them. As such, by using those official packs and this mod, you’ll get the ultimate music DB treatment.
The mod replaces almost every track in the game, from battle BGM to a nice amount of ambient, mystery and comedical ones. It even replaces the music for the title cards for custom battles.
>> The article has no media, but it features not only the link to the mod, but also the links to the two tools you’ll need to install it.

New Silent Hill 2 Remake Mod removes the fake “hero” light from James & Maria
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/new-silent-hill-2-remake-mod-removes-the-fake-hero-light-from-james-maria/
Some fans were disappointed when Silent Hill 2 Remake came out as James is glowing in the game, something that makes him feel a bit out of place. Well, good news everyone as there is a mod that removes the fake “hero” light from both James and Maria.
But let me explain what’s happening here. You see, Bloober Team has used a fake “hero” light behind James for visibility purposes. From a gameplay perspective, this is a clever move. However, as I said, this fake light makes James and Maria glow in the dark. This can break the game’s overall immersion.
So, if you’re not playing the game in the dark, I suggest staying away from the mod. While it will improve game immersion, it will make it even more difficult to see what’s happening on screen. If, on the other hand, you play the game in the dark, you should use it.
You can download the mod from this link. This mod removes the “hero” light from both James and Maria. There is also another mod that can remove or reduce the “hero” light behind James. So, if you do not care about Maria, you can use that one as it comes with minimal and mid versions of the “hero light” (which look amazing IMO).
>> There’s only one screenshot, for the second mod, and I can barely see sh*t on two of the presets it brings.

The final version of Asylum Reborn, an incredible 4K Texture Pack for Batman: Arkham Asylum, has just been released
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/the-final-version-of-asylum-reborn-an-incredible-4k-texture-pack-for-batman-arkham-asylum-has-just-been-released/
In 2022, modder ‘GPUnity’ released the first version of his 4K Texture Pack for Batman: Arkham Asylum. And earlier today, the modder released the final version of it. This version updates all the game’s textures to 4K. And, as you will see, the result is truly incredible.
To showcase the new 4K textures, GPUnity shared the following video. This video compares the vanilla textures with the new ones. And, similarly to Halk Hogan’s HD Texture Pack for The Witcher 3, this pack is a must for everyone who wants to replay this Batman Arkham game.
Batman: Arkham Asylum came out in 2009. As such, it’s almost 15 years old. So, by today’s standards, its textures look blurry and kind of bad. I mean, just take a look at the video. They look really bad.
And that’s where this HD Texture Pack comes in. By using it, you will be able to enjoy, once again, this classic Batman game. Yes, the controls may feel a bit dated. However, thanks to these new 4K textures, the game can still look great.

This modder's 'final love letter to Dark Souls 2' is a massive mechanical overhaul and just the excuse I needed for a Majula homecoming
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/dark-souls-2-bearer-of-the-curse-mod/
Even before the ascent of Elden Ring, Dark Souls 2 was all too often overlooked—and unjustly maligned, according to the brave, intelligent, and very cool souls who are defending Dark Souls 2 to this day. One of those devoted few, modder AoiYozora, just released what they call "a final love letter" to FromSoft's black sheep sequel: Bearer of the Curse Edition, a "faithful DS2 conversion" mod that refreshes Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin with a suite of mechanical overhauls.
Bearer of the Curse Edition's goal isn't adding new content or entirely redesigning how it plays. Instead, the mod's main focus is on providing quality-of-life mechanical changes to bring Dark Souls 2 more in line with design conventions from later FromSoft games, add convenience, and sand down some of the friction that might've obscured its appeal.

Final Fantasy 7 retranslation mod promises English-speaking players an experience 'as close as possible to that of Japanese-speaking players'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/final-fantasy-7-retranslation-mod-promises-english-speaking-players-an-experience-as-close-as-possible-to-that-of-japanese-speaking-players/
I never finished Final Fantasy 7. I know there are plenty of people who can forgive the stilted, over-formal oddity of its English translation, but I'm not one of them. Fortunately, there are other people out there who think FF7 deserves better, including the Shinra Archaeology Team. This squad of modders has put together the Shinra Archaeology Cut of Final Fantasy 7, a retranslation mod that just hit 1.0.
This version of FF7 "fixes mistakes in the original English translation; improves tonal accuracy using idiomatic language; and conforms to the localization choices of the Compilation and Remake trilogy where applicable to ensure continuity through the Final Fantasy VII series." Which means if you move on to the excellent Final Fantasy 7 Remake afterward, you won't find it too jarring.
"The aim of this retranslation is to give English players a narrative experience and foundation of lore that is as close as possible to that of Japanese-speaking players", the Shinra Archaeology team says.
As someone trying to sell you a set of Buster Swords on the Home Shopping Network might say, "But wait, there's more!" This mod also has an optional cut-content component that "restores numerous events, maps, animations, and lines of dialogue that were cut from the final release."

Fallout 1 fan-remake taps out just 2 months after it got a meaty demo, but promises it's not because of 'infighting' or Bethesda meddling
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/fallout-1-fan-remake-taps-out-just-2-months-after-it-got-a-meaty-demo-but-promises-its-not-because-of-infighting-or-bethesda-meddling/
It was just the other day that I told PCG writer Ted Litchfield that I want a whole game—Museum of Mechanics: Lockpicking-style—that lets me walk through the ruins of all the doomed fan attempts to remake old games in a modern engine. KOTOR's Apeiron, that Resident Evil 2 redo, innumerable attempts to remake GoldenEye without attracting Nintendo's baleful gaze: They all went the way of the Dodo, lost to time.
Alas, there's one more for the pile. Fallout: Vault 13 was a fan project that sought to rebuild the original Fallout 1 in the hi-res, first-person skin of Fallout 4, but now it's pretty much dead. It actually looked like it was moving along pretty well. Just two months ago it got a demo showing off some of the game's early areas that was very well-received. Not, generally, the kind of thing you expect of a project just a month or two away from throwing in the towel.
But that's exactly what it's done. In a message on Discord, Fallout: Vault 13 co-lead culinwino posted: "We have decided to officially suspend development on Fallout: Vault 13. This was not an easy decision, but we believe it is the right step at this stage of our journey. I know this may come as unexpected news, and we sincerely apologize for any disappointment it may cause."

Pokemon Legends Arceus & Pokemon BDSP PC builds have been leaked and cracked
https://www.dsogaming.com/news/pokemon-legends-arceus-pokemon-bdsp-pc-builds-have-been-leaked-and-cracked/
Last week, Pokemon developer Game Freak was attacked by hackers. The hackers who got into Game Freak’s servers obtained unreleased PC builds of two Pokemon games. And, from the looks of it, these PC builds have already been cracked and they are playable on PCs.
Now for those who are wondering, each and every studio creates a PC dev build for their games. Devs use these PC builds to test various things. However, the existence of those PC builds does not mean that the games will come out on PC. That’s not how things work. So no. Nintendo was never planning to bring its Pokemon games on PC.

Monday news, the long part two:

PlayStation loses fight in EU courts to stop sale of 'parasite' mods because, among other reasons, a book author can't stop 'the reader from skipping to the end'
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/playstation-loses-fight-in-eu-courts-to-stop-sale-of-parasite-mods-because-among-other-reasons-a-book-author-cant-stop-the-reader-from-skipping-to-the-end/
PlayStation's just lost a landmark court case that could set some precedent for cheating software in the EU—which is probably better for the consumer than it sounds at first blush.
As reported by EuroNews, PlayStation has recently been embroiled in a legal bout with Datel, who have been selling software that allows players to cheat at videogames. The software in question gave players infinite boosts in MotorStorm, but it also—in a less cheaty fashion—allowed them to control it using motion controls, which seems pretty benign to me.
The case made it to the highest court in the EU, the Court of Justice, and has been thoroughly dismissed in Datel's favour. Despite Sony's argument that the software "latches on … like a parasite" to the console, the judges maintain that the software involved merely impacts its RAM rather than the program itself, so it's all fair play:
"The Directive on the legal protection of computer programs does not allow the holder of that protection to prohibit the marketing by a third party of software which merely changes variables transferred temporarily … The directive protects only the intellectual creation as it is reflected in the text of the computer program’s source code and object code."

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii moves its launch up by a week to avoid being hunted by a monster
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/like-a-dragon-pirate-yakuza-in-hawaii-moves-its-launch-up-by-a-week-to-avoid-being-hunted-by-a-monster/
RGG Studio and Sega dropped a new trailer for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii at yesterday's Xbox Partner Preview showcase, and also a surprise new release date: Instead of coming on February 28, 2025 as planned, it will come out one week earlier, on February 21. Now we know why, and the reason is eminently practical.

'Catch and remove cheaters within one hour': Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 anti-cheat team sets a lofty goal for the new game
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/call-of-duty/catch-and-remove-cheaters-within-one-hour-call-of-duty-black-ops-6-anti-cheat-team-sets-a-lofty-goal-for-the-new-game/
I made my peace with cheaters a long time ago. The more you play a multiplayer game, and the better you get at it, the more likely you are to run into losers who paid $30 to cheat at a videogame. Call of Duty's dedicated Ricochet anti-cheat team knows it can't stamp out cheaters entirely in an FPS that's constantly changing, but it has set an ambitious new goal for itself as Black Ops 6's release looms: "We want to catch and remove cheaters within one hour of them being in their first match."

'We will not pay for our bosses mistakes' — French union denounces Don't Nod's plan that could impact up to 69 workers
https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/we-will-not-pay-for-our-bosses-mistakes-french-union-denounces-dont-nods-plan-that-could-impact-up-to-69-workers/
French game studio Don't Nod has announced plans for a "reorganization project" that could result in the layoff of up to 69 workers. The French union that represents Don't Nod workers, STJV (Le Syndicat des Travailleurs et Travailleuses du Jeu Vidéo), called the plans "the climax of a series of catastrophic decisions," that it detailed in a statement earlier this year.

The creator of Dusk and Iron Lung is making a gruesome but surprisingly funny horror game about beating killer cultists with lead pipes and 2x4s

I'm always down for a David Szymanski joint. The Dusk and Iron Lung dev has a real way with making games that feel good, no matter the genre—really tactile weapons and interactions, great sound design, just a general attention to detail—and his games always have an anarchic sense of humor that I really dig. Szymanski's next game, Butcher's Creek, feels like another winner. It's a melee combat-focused first person horror game where you square off against torture cultists in rural Appalachia.

Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 was a pleasant surprise. While the studio had been responsible for several fairly well-received horror games since its pivot to the genre with 2016's Layers of Fear, none of them boasted the sophistication of Team Silent's GOAT. There was a gulf between Bloober Team's spooky walking sims and the 2001 twisted survival horror game, and expectations were not high.

Baldur's Gate 3 was one of last year's biggest critical and commercial successes—selling bonkers numbers and taking the crown of our annual top 100 list. We rather liked it, in case you couldn't tell.
What's more, it did so against what big-budget companies making RPGs would like you to believe is convention. (...)
Even compared to Skyrim, Starfield felt particularly thin on the RPG mechanics. I never quite felt like I was playing an archetype of a character, just a suggestion of one. That's not likely to change, though, according to a former Bethesda developer in an interview with Videogamer. Bruce Nesmith, who took lead on Skyrim, explains his reasoning:

Surgent Studios was founded by actor Abubakar Salim, best known for roles as Bayek in Assassin's Creed Origins and Alyn of Hull in House of the Dragon. It went on to make Tales of Kenzera: Zau, but times have been tough since the game's release, and now the studio is taking a temporary hiatus.

The curse of horde shooter balance: Fans take to Steam in protest as Space Marine 2 gets unpopular patch—devs promise course correction within the week

If covering Helldivers 2 this year has taught me anything, it's that balancing a horde shooter is monstrously hard—starting with an unpopular major balance patch that dented the Railgun, it wasn't until this month that, after a big overhaul, Arrowhead started hitting the mark again. So to see Space Marine 2 now running into the same problems has given me an unpleasant sense of intergalactic déjà vu.

@Bolded/italic - When did they ever see Steam as a competitor?

Basil, there are two reasons:

1- People that play on PC via Steam don't need to buy one of Sony's consoles to play games. Hence they are competitors because Valve/Steam is in the way of selling more Playstations.

2- Valve gets a cut from every sale on Steam. Sony would like to get 100% of the money. That is the source of most problems with EA, Ubisoft and the rest, and the reason they all launched their own stores, to try to get all the money from every game sold. They're competing for the money.

The main thing the publishers refuse to understand, is that yes, while they do want 100% of that money, they also have to actually co-operate in an open market.

In a closer market you can get as cutthroat as you want, because it's your box, your store, your own closed little ecosystem. Publishers seem to look at an open platform and market and assume they can walk right in and dictate how it is operated, and it almost always fails and earns ire from customers over the long-term. Like right now, I buy on Steam, I play on Steam, I love Steam's features, and yet Sony has come in, sold me a few games and now turns around and tells me I am blocked from buying their games, despite them actually existing on Steam.

To me that is Sony dictating their own rules within Steam's ecosystem, and it's not just Sony, other publishers have dictated their own crap too, and it's why we end up seeing them either leave or walk back on their crappy decisions they've made before. This is why I firmly believe that even if they just care about the money, they are so stupid/stubborn to learn the rules and nature of how open marks/open competition actually works.

To this day, there are more people who don't want to use, nor like Ubisoft's shitty client, and yet Ubisoft refuses to acknowledge this, let alone vastly improve their client. They would rather leech off Steam and still put their foot down on you having to use their crappy client, which tells me they don't even care about the customer, or Steam, it's just the money, and that comes off as childishly rude as hell.

Honestly, if you want an example of a bratty child refusing to learn what they did was wrong, look no further than at some game company CEO's and C-suits.

And yet Playstation games are coming out on Steam.

Also EA and Ubisoft are both back on releasing their games on Steam.

People who play exclusively on PC will likely continue to play exclusively on PC. They probably already realize that which is why the amount of releases increased and the amount of time it takes for a game to be released on PC is getting smaller. Sony's practically doing the same thing that MS is already doing but at a slower rate.

They dont see them as competitor but as a source of potential sales. Same with EGS and GOG where these games are being released as well - its not just Steam.

The reason why publishers sell or came back to Steam, is primarily because the main audiences on PC are on Steam or GoG. Their own clients are absolutely barebones, lack a refined customer service experience and don't even sell that many games outside of their own 1st party offerings (even then some of their prices are marked up and aren't actually good deals).

They feel they have to use Steam, but if you asked any publisher on the planet if they had an option to use their own client and be guaranteed more sales and 100% of the profits, they'd choose that over Steam, and their past experiences have proven they would rather do that, but they keep getting punished, because the majority of us on PC go where the good services/games are, and that happens to be Steam and GoG.

I can easily see Sony trying to bank on it's entire brand power, and seeing them set up their own store, while trying to push some folks away from Steam onto their own client ecosystem. They already have their overlay and trophy systems available now, all that remains is a fully functional storefront/client library systems. The reality for Sony is that their storefront will be barebones and will likely be utter garbage, because like all other publishers, you'll only end up seeing 1st party games, some 3rd party games they made exclusive deals with, and no mod support.

Sony knows they can't really sway PC folks to buy into a plastic closed box, but the plastic box wars are well and truly over now, Basil. Today's current war is that of the ecosystems. Epic came back to PC and tried to bribe it's way into a slice of the PC pie, before that there was also MS, and now we're seeing Sony doing the same.

It's all about the MAU's and how many people you have within your walled ecosystems, not who can sell the most plastic boxes, those days are over.

Monday news, the long part two:

PlayStation loses fight in EU courts to stop sale of 'parasite' mods because, among other reasons, a book author can't stop 'the reader from skipping to the end'

See this is why I don't get why anyone would root for Sony or Nintendo, as both do not like emulation, nor modding.

If Sony does eventually make their own PC storefront, you can bet your sweet bippy they won't be supporting the PC modding community (they were the ones that originally helped fund and pushed for Denuvo in the first place, and that was primarily aimed at PC gamers, not other platforms, which comes off as a hostile agressive take from Sony's end if you ask me).

Not really sure why you quoted me , all the points you made is pretty much what I believe lol

I'm not disagreeing either, just felt like adding to the convo.

I just wish the publishers were more brutally honest on what they value the most. Sure they'd lose customers, but at least it would force them to do better lol.

Sony admitting they need to leech off Steam until they can throw up their storefront would be more transparent, compared to what they are doing now, where it's obvious to some of us here, but not to normies who aren't putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
