From what I gather from discussions with some people who know more about chip design, is that Ryzen 9000 is probably very hampered by it's memory, as in:

  1. the IO die being the same as for Zen 4
  2. The infinity fabric being at it's limit
  3. the internal memory buses for the caches, while having more throughput, also need longer to be filled because they are wider, causing some delays in operation.

As such, an X3D chip might be interesting, as it could alleviate those problems quite a bit

Looking at non-Windows focused reviews for Zen 5 makes me think the problem runs deeper that. It's like something is being lose in translation.

I read some Linux reviews and there's an uplift of roughly 5% over Windows when the same programs are used, so Windows is certainly not helping, but also not the root cause.

Sins of a Solar Empire 2 just launched on steam and one of the first reviews let me know that it has no graphics options. What? I mean recommended is a GTX 1060 so I guess performance isn't an issue but.... why? "No graphic settings, only bloom, fullscreen-no fullscreen, etc."

What? That's the dumbest sh*t I've heard in quite some time, more so now that console games are starting to add them.

Please excuse my bad English.

So, apparently Valve has fixed Steam's user reviews, as in the memes, ASCII art, and other unhelpful stuff will (by default) not be visible first: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/593110/view/4326355263805583415 Judging by a quick look, it's actually working! Well, at least until users find new ways to make reviews unhelpful again, but it seems much better for now.

Well, the "new helpfulness system" is quite "publisher friendly"... it hides complaints about additional launchers and DRM-systems.

Here is a comparison of "Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition", which uses both the Ubisoft Connect launcher and Denuvo:

But Valve is smart enough to offer an easy opt-out of the "new helpfulness system", so they can shrug off complaints about censorship.

I'm still unsure, if I will activate the new system or not. Probably I'll switch it on and off to see "both sides of the story".

By the way, "Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition" runs great on my Steam Deck! But you need an internet connection to start the game (f.e. via hotspot of your phone, if you are on the go). After starting it, you can go into airplane mode... you don't need a continuous connection the whole playtime.

Well that's obviously bad and beyond the scope of what was promised in my opinion. I still think it's a net win, because seeing informative reviews about most games seems more useful than seeing DRM complaints about few. I wish Valve didn't exclude DRM complaints and such though, since it means that I should still check the typically poor reviews as well to see if there are e.g. DRM woes involved.

Probably has more to do with the fact that it needs a potato to run on and that's at it's best graphics.

Also it probably just looks at what it has and allocates ressources accordingly. Few games do so (most did early on when windows95 and 3D graphics cards were all new as programmers weren't sure if the customers would really know what he has as hardware and the software within windows), but with a 2024 game that needs a quadcore CPU and an RX 450 (aka Radeon HD 7750, a lower midrange GPU from 12 years ago with 8CU and 1Ghz clock speed) as minimum, pretty much anything that can game will run the game. Really, only entry-level laptops and NUCs will have problems running that game these days, and even then it might work.

Still, you can add some options to allow further customization from the end user.

I want to upgrade my old Ryzen 5950X+128GB DDR3600.
But AMD underwhelmed.

And it's not just the performance either... The 7950X3D is almost $200 AUD cheaper than the 9950X and it's also faster.
And the regular 7950X is almost $300 cheaper.

Price is a big factor... And I understand that launch MSRP is lower for the 9000 series, but the 7000 series is below launch MSRP, so it's irrelevant, we compare prices as they are currently, not historically unless we can start traveling through time.

I think once supply and pricing of the 9000 series settles a bit it will be a good recommendation, especially when X3D parts drop, but right now it's not a smart purchase.

I guess I will wait it out for a bit longer, AM5 should get at-least one more CPU release before a new socket rolls out.

I've been replaying Alien: Isolation and I forgot how much that shit can be stressful. Still one of the GOATs of survival horror games, though.

Highly recommend it to anyone interested in the genre, looks great even 10 years later.
