There are some reviews that state that the 9700X can't reach the claimed clocks in multithreaded operations. AMD has been quite consistent and reliable with its specs for all the Zen processors, making these claims surprising.

Because of that, some stability issues reviewers have had and the last minute problems that forced AMD to delay these processors, I wouldn't be too surprised to see updated reviews or re-reviews of these processors down the line, once AMD has launched new updated drivers and AGESA/BIOS that nail down the remaining problems.

The 65W power cap is probably too severe, even the X3Ds are capped at like 120W. But for a chip to have passed testing and now be unable to reach makes me think it must be some combination of a faulty cooling installation (which worsens leakage by itself) plus razor-thin margins in that regard.

Some outlets have compared the 9700X to the 7700 instead of the 7700X, which is also a 65W part. Then the chip has an uplift of ~12%, not great, but at least isn't quite as humiliating as just 3-6% compared to the 7700X.

Where the 9700X really shines is in everything that uses AVX, especially AVX-512, and with AI. With the former, the 9700X can actually beat the 7950X while with the latter, the 9600X is on par with the 7900X.

It looks like the Ryzen 9000 series is just a more efficient 7000 series with small IPC improvements (5-10%).

Either TSMC is not delivering in the power-performance curves with N5/N4 or AMD overreacted to power consumption concerns (which, given Intel's current woes and how they were burned by FX a decade ago, it's understandable).

Some of those IPC improvements got eroded by lower clocks as well remember... There is a bell curve of frequency and power consumption that dictates efficiency for every node, so it may be a slight reduction for the newer node due to less than ideal characteristics. I.E. More leakage.
I.E:

* 9950X 4.3Ghz to 5.7Ghz.
* 7950X 4.5Ghz to 5.7Ghz.

********

* 9900X 4.4Ghz to 5.6Ghz
* 7900X 4.7Ghz to 5.6Ghz.

********

* 9700X 3.8Ghz to 5.5Ghz.
* 7700X 4.5Ghz to 5.4Ghz.

*********

* 9600X 3.9Ghz to 5.4Ghz.
* 7600X 4.7Ghz to 5.3Ghz.

*********

In saying that... These CPU's are NOT for 7000 series of users, it's a waste of money, they are better to wait for the next lineup.
For 5000 series users, it starts to become a consideration.

But it's the 1000, 2000 and 3000 series users who would get the biggest bang for buck here.

Balatro has sold 2 million copies, free 'major gameplay update' coming next year
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/card-games/balatro-has-sold-2-million-copies-free-major-gameplay-update-coming-next-year/
There have been a few small hints that people like poker roguelike Balatro. Our Balatro review score of 91, for instance, the 40,000 Steam reviews that average out to "Overwhelmingly Positive," and the fact that I put 30 hours into it in a single week—and that was when I was playing the pre-launch demo, not even the full game.
Another tiny clue that Balatro is, y'know, pretty good surfaced this week: it's now sold over 2 million copies on all platforms. That's outstanding for a game that's been for the most part the work of a single developer, LocalThunk.
“I would never have thought that Balatro would be played by over 2 million people when I started working on it almost 3 years ago," LocalThunk said in an email sent to PC Gamer. "I’m so grateful to all the players for giving it a chance and I’m excited to show everyone the next chapter for my game.”

Warner Bros execs pine for the Hogwarts Legacy glory days as games revenue plummets 41% thanks to Suicide Squad's abysmal performance
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/action/warner-bros-execs-pine-for-the-hogwarts-legacy-glory-days-as-games-revenue-plummets-41-thanks-to-suicide-squads-abysmal-performance/
Rocksteady has made some excellent games in its time, so I honestly feel a bit bad about the lead-balloon performance of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. I probably don't feel as bad about it as Warner Bros does, though: The entertainment megacorp just released its earnings statement for Q2 2024, and the news for its games revenue isn't great.
Specifically, games revenue is down an eye-watering 41% compared to Q2 2023. The reason? Rocksteady's ill-fated baby. Downturns were "primarily driven by the weak performance of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League this year," say Warner execs, adding that the bruise is all the more tender given "the strong performance of Hogwarts Legacy in the prior year."
>> Well, that what happens when the game isn’t great and its tied to a game practice that the main audience of the game doesn’t like.

PlayStation 4 emulator, shadPS4, can now run Red Dead Redemption Remastered and Tomb Raider I-III Remastered with 30fps and 110fps, respectively

Another week, another article about the best PlayStation 4 emulator for the PC. So last month, we informed you about Red Dead Redemption Remastered running at around 25fps on a high-end PC system. And today, we are happy to report that the game can run with a locked 30fps.
YouTube’s “BrutalSam” has shared the following video, showcasing RDR Remastered with a locked 30fps. To get this kind of performance, the YouTuber used an Intel Core i5 13400 with 32GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060.
shadPS4 also offers an option to unlock the game’s framerate. However, that experimental setting is currently bugged. Instead of doubling the framerate, it doubles the game’s speed. The good news here is that the shadPS4 devs are looking into fixing this.
Now as you’ll see in the video, RDR Remastered has major visual artifacts. In short, it’s nowhere close to being described as playable. Still, the fact that the game can now run with 30fps is mind-blowing.
And that’s not all. Remember Tomb Raider I-III Remastered? Well, now this collection can run with 110fps.
>> There’s a 4 minutes video describing the improvements.

NIS America says Trails and Ys RPG fans won't have to wait so long for future English releases: 'We want to bring that timeline down'

Few game communities have had to learn patience like Japanese RPGs fans. Series like Nihon Falcom’s Ys have historically taken well over a year to see an official English translation. Yet the latest entry in the series, Ys 10: Nordics, is slated to launch worldwide three months quicker than its predecessor Ys 9: Monstrum Nox did compared to its respective Japanese release. According to publisher NIS America, it's a sign of things to come.

StarCraft 2 spiritual successor Stormgate launches to a mixed rating on Steam, but Frost Giant is undaunted: 'Mixed reviews are to be expected at this stage'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rts/starcraft-2-spiritual-successor-stormgate-launches-to-a-mixed-rating-on-steam-but-frost-giant-is-undaunted-mixed-reviews-are-to-be-expected-at-this-stage/
Stormgate was unveiled in 2022 and it's come a long way since then: It was the biggest videogame Kickstarter of 2023, earning $2 million on top of $35 million already raised through an initial funding round, and even managed to attract some celebrity voice acting from Simu Liu and Chris Metzen. It also made a big impression on online editor and PC Gamer strategysmith Fraser Brown, who declared that "for the first time in a while, I'm excited to dip my toes into the competitive side of real-time strategy again."
The early access launch for Kickstarter backers hasn't gone smoothly, however. Since its debut on July 30, Stormgate has earned a "mixed" rating on Steam across just over 2,000 user reviews: Common complaints include an incomplete story and unremarkable unit interactions, sub-par enemy AI in PvE modes, the lack of manual saving and loading, and over-aggressive monetization.

Baldur's Gate 3 released about this time last year, and even though Larian's gearing up for what's next the studio is still monitoring what people do and don't do in the hit RPG. Much like it did a couple times late last year, Larian has compiled some strange and interesting bits of data about how you all managed to get surprisingly weird in a game that's surprising and weird even when you don't go out of your way to get turned into cheese—which 1.9 million people did.

Fans of MOBAs and extraction shooters should sign up for Seekers of Skyveil's playtest on Steam and prepare for its closed beta next month

Seekers of Skyveil is like playing a MOBA with a tight time limit. You have to get in and out alive so you can come back with better stuff. It's an extraction shooter without the shooter, a genre twist that hooked me when I played it in May. Its developer Elodie Games runs regular playtests on Steam—which you can sign up for now—and next month it's going to enter closed beta.

https://www.pcgamer.com/games/life-sim/previously-unreleased-life-by-you-screenshots-are-making-life-sim-fans-even-sadder-that-it-got-cancelled/
Life By You looked set to be the game that finally gave The Sims a run for its money, until it was beset by delays and then, in June, a surprise cancellation followed almost immediately by an unsurprising closure of developer Paradox Tectonic. Now, as so often happens in cases like this, previously unreleased images from the game are starting to come to light, giving us a look at what might have been—and it looks like it might have been really good.

Bungie can't catch a W: Rather than buffing the drop rate of Destiny 2's most-wanted exotic items, the latest patch nerfed it into dust
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fps/bungie-cant-catch-a-w-rather-than-buffing-the-drop-rate-of-destiny-2s-most-wanted-exotic-items-the-latest-patch-has-nerfed-it-into-the-ground/
It turns out that if you fire a bunch of your QA staff, the game you're making will tend to run into quality issues. I'm not saying the problems with Destiny 2's latest patch are a direct result of last week's drastic headcount reduction at Bungie, but it can hardly help.
Yesterday's weekly reset also saw the rollout of update 8.0.5, which included a swath of fixes and balance changes. The most anticipated of these was a buff to the drop rate of Prismatic exotic class items.
>> And Sony has used usual BS business terms to explain the layoff of those 220 Bungie employees.

A mischevious dagger slid Diablo 4 players free XP boosts under the table before Blizzard caught it
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/a-mischevious-dagger-slid-diablo-4-players-free-xp-boosts-under-the-table-before-blizzard-caught-it/
Several Diablo 4 players have reported that they randomly received the biggest XP boost of their life in the latest season. One player went from level 60 to 100 instantly, a process that usually takes several hours grinding dungeons. After some investigating, Blizzard found the culprit: a mischevious new unique dagger for rogues.

World of Warcraft: The War Within gets a new 2D cinematic, reminds us that Xal'atath is an ancient knife piloting a corpse puppet for kicks
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/world-of-warcraft/world-of-warcraft-the-war-within-gets-a-new-2d-cinematic-reminds-us-that-xal-atath-is-an-ancient-knife-piloting-a-corpse-puppet-for-kicks/
World of Warcraft: The War Within's story is shaping up to be, against all odds, actually kinda neat. (...)
Further spinning up my 'hey this might be decent, actually' engine is Threads of Destiny, the 2D cinematic seen above. It's gorgeous, owing to Blizzard's impossibly big budget for this kind of thing—but it also gives us a look into the central antagonists of the expansion's first leg, the Nerubian Empire.

The next game from Dishonored co-creator Raphael Colantonio is a first-person immersive sim with a structure between Prey and Fallout: New Vegas—'We favour density over size'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/the-next-game-from-dishonored-co-creator-raphael-colantonio-is-a-first-person-immersive-sim-with-a-structure-between-prey-and-fallout-new-vegaswere-going-for-density-over-size/
Raphael Colantonio wants you to imagine a spectrum. On its left you have Dishonored, the series he co-created with fellow immersive sim veteran Harvey Smith. It's relatively linear and tightly mission-based; once you've finished with a level there's no going back. On the right there's Fallout: New Vegas—a rambling open world. 2017's Prey is in the dead centre, open but dense, with some areas gated off until you have the equipment (or creativity) to get in.
Colantonio says the new immersive sim from his team at WolfEye Studios sits between Prey and New Vegas on that spectrum—"We favour density over size." That's all you need to say to rocket to the top of my wishlist. Billed as a "First-person action RPG," Colantonio and WolfEye CEO Julien Roby make the game sound like a return to their roots at Arkane: "We are even closer to that Fallout thing, [but] still with the values of previous games we've worked on like Prey and Dishonored. It's mobility and that kind of physicality, the level design, the worldbuilding of those games, but served in a structure that is more open than ever."

A few weeks back on PC Gamer, Crytek debuted Hunt: Showdown's first new map in three years, Mammon's Gulch. We all had a good time taking in the sights of Hunt's vision of Colorado, a sun-baked mountain range with oil fields and an extensive mining operation, but Crytek was holding something back: There's a new wild target on the loose in Mammon's Gulch, and it's arriving alongside a new event called Scorched Earth.

Yeah seeing der8auer's results when he upped the power was eye opening. It reminded me of the old days of when you could over clock your PC and see massive gains. That said the power didn't do much for games, it seemed only make a significant difference in non gaming applications. AMD should have called the 9700X the 9700 and had another sku with a higher power limit called the 9700X. Sure knowledgeable enthusiasts would just tweak the 9700 anyway, but most people just rock "out of the box" performance.

Friday news, the second part:

Dragon Age director says BioWare learned an important lesson from the disaster that was Anthem: 'Know what you're good at and then double down on it'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/rpg/dragon-age-director-says-bioware-learned-an-important-lesson-from-the-disaster-that-was-anthem-know-what-youre-good-at-and-then-double-down-on-it/
Anthem was kind of baffling right from the start. Why would BioWare, a studio built almost exclusively on popular singleplayer RPGs—Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, let us not forget Jade Empire—suddenly dive into a multiplayer-focused looter shooter? It was weird, and the outcome, if not inevitable, was at least not entirely surprising: We called it "deeply flawed and frequently frustrating" in our 55% review, and just two years after it launched in 2019, BioWare pulled the plug, officially halting future development.
There's an old adage that says you learn more from failure than success, and that may be the one upside to Anthem's big bomb. In a new Edge magazine feature on BioWare's upcoming Dragon Age: The Veilguard, creative director John Epler said the studio's experience with Anthem taught it a tough but important lesson: Stick to what you know.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard's combat is 'more technically demanding on the player' BioWare says, which is why we'll only be controlling one character
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/dragon-age/dragon-age-the-veilguard-s-combat-is-more-technically-demanding-on-the-player-bioware-says-which-is-why-we-ll-only-be-controlling-one-character/
Leading up to the launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard this autumn, BioWare continues to share details about all the things that are changing in the fourth game of the series. One very obvious departure is its extremely action-forward combat, subject of plenty of debate among fans (including my own group chats). In particular, Veilguard will narrow the focus of combat so that we'll only have direct control of our player character Rook—a change that was made, BioWare says, because the faster pace of combat made it difficult for players to manage the full party.

Arkane founder was saddened by the closure of Arkane Austin, but says immersive sims aren't going anywhere: The studio is gone, but 'the people survive'
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/arkane-founder-was-saddened-by-the-closure-of-arkane-austin-but-says-immersive-sims-arent-going-anywhere-the-studio-is-gone-but-the-people-survive/
The closure of Arkane Austin earlier this year came as a very unhappy surprise, felt keenly by fans of the immersive sim genre. But in a new interview with PC Gamer, Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio, who left the company in 2017, said that while the shutdown is sad, it also represents an opportunity for a renewal of the genre.

As a lifelong Warhammer 40,000 fan, I have to confess to being a little underwhelmed by the playable Space Marine 2 demo that dropped this time last year. Saber Interactive's game looked the part—more so than any other 40k spinoff—but the combat felt too clunky, even bearing in mind the fact that I was playing a huge transhuman lad in power armor. So I was glad when a yearlong delay was announced last November in order to "properly polish the game".
Since then, the devs have had to deal with the fallout from a full build of the game leaking online, (at least it was long out of date), and more recently abandoned a planned public beta test in order to further focus on polish. Which brings us to this week, and a fresh round of playable impressions, the verdict from which is: Actually, this rips.

Riding the wave of those good vibes, this morning publisher Focus Entertainment dropped seven minutes of official multiplayer footage. The video includes action from the co-operative PvE Operations mode, as well as some marine-on-marine action from the capture and control PvP modes (embedded above). Playing against real people isn't really what I'm personally looking for from Space Marine 2, but I did love seeing how faithfully Saber has modelled the heretics of the Death Guard, World Eater and Alpha Legion chapters.
