Monday news, the very long part two:
Upcoming indie RPG says forget about looting treasure chests—now you are one

Just a Chest, from a small Chinese dev called 42TeaParty, stars a protagonist named Issac—standard stuff so far—but Isaac isn't a valiant knight or devious demon lord. Isaac is a humble treasure chest. Joined by some wacky companions, he sets out on a journey to… well, I'm not exactly sure. Probably to find some gold to put in his belly or something.
Deep Rock Galactic is going rogue with an all-new spinoff game coming next year
https://www.pcgamer.com/deep-rock-galactic-is-going-rogue-with-an-all-new-spinoff-game-coming-next-year/
To be blunt, the success of Deep Rock Galactic was a surprise to me. A game about "space dwarves" mining for resources while fighting off hostile aliens in the deepest reaches of space sounds a little niche, doesn't it? Especially without a Warhammer 40,000 license attached to it. And yet, it's a hit: An "overwhelmingly positive" rating across nearly 200,000 user reviews on Steam, and more than three years after its 2020 launch—which came after two years of early access—it still regularly draws thousands of concurrent players.
Now developer Ghost Ship Games has announced that a new game set in the same universe, called Deep Rock Galactic: Rogue Core, is coming in 2024.
The most bizarre Final Fantasy 14 bug to date is giving everyone random buffs and making them go Super Saiyan
https://www.pcgamer.com/the-most-bizarre-final-fantasy-14-bug-to-date-is-giving-everyone-random-buffs-and-making-them-go-super-saiyan/
There must be something in the water over in Eorzea—or a few backend bugs chewing their way through some Final Fantasy 14 code—because players have found themselves getting some unexpected power ups from totally random, persistent buffs.
Cozy fishing horror Dredge gets some chilling DLC next month
https://www.pcgamer.com/cozy-fishing-horror-dredge-gets-some-chilling-dlc-next-month/
Dredge is easily one of my favourite games of 2023—and considering how many bangers have released this year, that's a pretty big deal. Its sinister blend of fishing and Eldritch horror had me hooked, and next month I'll be able to experience even more thanks to its Pale Reach DLC.
Stardew Valley creator reveals a new and very important addition coming in the 1.6 update: 'Hats on cats (and dogs)'
https://www.pcgamer.com/stardew-valley-creator-reveals-a-new-and-very-important-addition-coming-in-the-16-update-hats-on-cats-and-dogs/
Stardew Valley's 1.6 update was supposed to be a relatively small thing, intended primarily to make life easier for modders rather than approaching the size of the feature-packed 1.5 update that once seemed like it would be Stardew Valley's send-off. 1.6 has grown significantly in scope since then, to include things like "a major new festival," new late-game content, new items and crafting recipes, and support for eight-person multiplayer on Steam. But now creator Eric Barone has teased what is undoubtedly the most important part of the update, and it can be summed up in five words: "Hats on cats."
"(And dogs.)"
Save a busy village from the apocalypse in this 'merciless' survival city builder
https://www.pcgamer.com/youre-doomed-from-the-start-in-merciless-survival-city-builder-dotage-but-trying-to-survive-the-apocalypse-is-all-part-of-the-fun/
As a city builder enthusiast and horrible mayor I've paved the way for plenty of disasters in my cities, like neglectfully letting peasants freeze by the dozens, losing my honey fortune to a heist, and chopping down a friendly enchanted talking tree just to get an amulet.
But in new turn-based roguelike city builder Dotage, your game ending in ruin is all but assured before you've even placed your first foraging hut. The elder of your village has delivered a prophecy of doom—and predicted a bunch of smaller catastrophes that are headed your way, too. Worse still, the old coot won't shut his damn mouth about it so your industrious little peasants have to live and work in constant fear of the approaching End Times.
It sure looks like edgy Pinocchio retelling Lies of P is getting some kind of DLC
https://www.pcgamer.com/it-sure-looks-like-edgy-pinocchio-retelling-lies-of-p-is-getting-some-kind-of-dlc/
It seems Lies of P's chilling take on the tale of Pinocchio isn't finished yet. A Neowiz job listing discovered by Okami Games has revealed that DLC "is planned for production."
It turns out good guys can rescue Baldur's Gate 3's evil playthrough companion mod-free by turning her into a sheep and making the sheep stand trial
https://www.pcgamer.com/it-turns-out-good-guys-can-rescue-baldurs-gate-3s-evil-playthrough-companion-mod-free-by-turning-her-into-a-sheep-and-making-the-sheep-stand-trial/
Drow Paladin Minthara seems like a cool character, even if she placed dead last in PC Gamer's Baldur's gate 3 companion ranking. To recruit her, you have to betray most of act one's questgivers and friendly NPCs to help a bunch of stinky goblins instead, and this route also sees you waving goodbye to companions Karlach, Wyll, Halsin, and possibly Gale.
There's already mods for recruiting Minthara without being heinous, but a Taiwanese gamer with the handle pao870111 figured out a way to do so in vanilla Baldur's Gate 3, subsequently shared in English to Reddit by ZookeepergameDeep360. Fair warning: it's a jank juggling act of epic proportions, and very much not what Larian intended.
>> Larian went above and beyond with this game, as proven by what they did to get the armor clanking noises right.
Warfare MMO Foxhole is adding naval combat complete with huge multi-person ships
https://www.pcgamer.com/warfare-mmo-foxhole-is-adding-naval-combat-complete-with-multi-person-ships/
Massive multiplayer warfighting game Foxhole is expanding big time, taking its huge wars to the high seas for the first time by adding major naval vessels like submarines, battleships, destroyers, and more that will take dozens of players to crew and operate across duty stations like command, piloting, engineering, guns, sonar, depth charges, and sea mines. It'll also bring a huge overhaul to the mechanics of naval invasions, introducing sea-based headquarters vessels where players can spawn. Foxhole's Naval Warfare update will launch on October 26, 2023.
Dave the Diver gets crabs and lobsters this month, among other new stuff, in its first content update
https://www.pcgamer.com/dave-the-diver-gets-crabs-and-lobsters-this-month-among-other-new-stuff-in-its-first-content-update/
Spearfishing and sushi restaurant managing indie RPG Dave the Diver was my surprise delight from last year, and proper release saw everyone else at PC Gamer agreeing with me. It's also poised to get its first real content update since release this month, October, bringing greater diversity to some dives, a fresh new quality of life update, and some straight-up crustaceans.
Following layoffs at CD Projekt Red, staff have formed a union for Polish game developers
https://www.pcgamer.com/following-layoffs-at-cd-projekt-red-staff-have-formed-a-union-for-polish-game-developers/
Developers at CD Projekt Red—the Polish studio responsible for a trilogy of videogames about a worker who believes in negotiating a fair price for his labor and one game set in a dystopian future where corporate exploitation is the rule—have formed a union. The Polish Gamedev Workers Union (PGWU) is part of the national union OZZ Inicjatywa Pracownicza, and is open to developers who work for other studios in Poland.
Weirdo indie RPG Knuckle Sandwich will finally release in November
https://www.pcgamer.com/weirdo-indie-rpg-knuckle-sandwich-will-finally-release-in-november/
Quite a few years after we first got a look at its early development and it won a bunch of indie show awards, surreal RPG Knuckle Sandwich will release next month: November 23, 2023. The game got a lot of attention back in the era when Undertale was still fresh because it offered something similar, and yet, very distinctly different.
Upcoming RTS-RPG fusion dares to ask big questions like 'What if the Vikings were riding dinosaurs?'
https://www.pcgamer.com/upcoming-rts-rpg-fusion-dares-to-ask-big-questions-like-what-if-the-vikings-were-riding-dinosaurs/
Personally I quite like Age of Empires, Warcraft, and Stronghold games. I also like dinosaurs. So, naturally, I like the concept behind Dinolords, a recently announced fusion of medieval city-builder and action RPG with RTS combat and also, you know, dinosaurs. Set to release into Early Access in the first few months of 2025, Dinolords is developed by new studio Northplay and published by the publishing arm of Ghost Ship Games, the developer behind Deep Rock Galactic.
Your whole life is secretly a deadly reality show in American Arcadia
https://www.pcgamer.com/your-whole-life-is-secretly-a-deadly-reality-show-in-american-arcadia/
We know the setup: A whole group of people life in an elaborately fake place that's actually the set of a sprawling reality show where they—and their lives—are the entertainment. Upcoming "cinematic puzzle game" American Arcadia is just that, a retro futuristic 1970s world constructed for entertainment purposes. Except for one thing: If you're not popular, if your ratings with the audience at home drop too far, you're killed.
American Arcadia just got a proper release date, too: November 15, 2023 will debut the hybrid of puzzle, platforming, cinematic story, and first-person mystery as protagonist Trevor and stage tech Angela Solano attempt to keep Trevor alive. There's a demo out now, for the curious. The voice cast will definitely be a draw for people, featuring Yuri Lowenthal (Spider-Man 1 & 2), Cissy Jones (Firewatch), and Krizia Bajos (Cyberpunk 2077).
This Pathfinder RPG's weakest class is a poisoner in a game where nearly everyone is immune to poison, but after two years it's about get a lifesaving overhaul
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-pathfinder-rpgs-weakest-class-is-a-poisoner-in-a-game-where-nearly-everyone-is-immune-to-poison-but-after-two-years-its-about-get-a-lifesaving-overhaul/
If you wanted to play a sneaky assassin guy (like I often do) in the excellent CRPG, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, you paradoxically never, ever wanted to pick the Assassin prestige class—it was that bad. In the game's 2.2 update accompanying the release of its Lord of Nothing DLC on November 21, though, Assassins might just get their ticket to the major leagues.
WoW Classic hardcore duel goes horribly wrong when player is ganked by a Horde guard in the ultimate act of betrayal
https://www.pcgamer.com/wow-classic-hardcore-duel-goes-horribly-wrong-when-player-is-ganked-by-a-horde-guard-in-the-ultimate-act-of-betrayal/
Leveling in WoW Classic hardcore might be exhilarating, but when any enemy has the potential to end your life prematurely and send you crying back to character creation, it makes sense to be cautious. A friendly duel seems like a safe way to let off some steam without worrying about your character's mortality, but sadly, the encounter ended the promising life of a poor undead mage called Thegreek.
If you're not familiar, regular duels aren't "to the death" in World of Warcraft, instead, the fight is automatically stopped just short of the losing player falling over. In an unfortunate turn of events, the Horde NPC that happened to be patrolling the area—and would usually be unfazed by a duel going on in his vicinity—rushed over and delivered the fatal blow to the mage before running back to his patrol route and continuing on his way. The mage in question, Reddit user QuadsiusPrime, captured the incident, which you can check out below.
This crab soulslike allows you to whip out a pistol and one shot the boss once you've had enough
https://www.pcgamer.com/this-crab-soulslike-allows-you-to-whip-out-a-pistol-and-one-shot-the-boss-once-youve-had-enough/
The appeal of soulslike games is one I'd somehow avoided. Then the other morning I was mindlessly scrolling TikTok instead of falling asleep and came across a short video. I watched a small crab get fed up with dodging, blocking, and occasionally getting a hit in against a big boss crab, give up, and pop a cap in his face. It just pulled out a gun and blew him away. That game was Another Crab's Treasure by Aggro Crab which currently has a limited time demo up on Steam as part of this year's Next Fest.
