When HDMI 2.1 Isn’t HDMI 2.1 – The Confusing World of the Standard, “Fake HDMI 2.1” and Likely Future Abuse

https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/when-hdmi-2-1-isnt-hdmi-2-1

There are new HDMI "2.1" TVs/Monitors that are coming out which claim it's HDMI 2.1 but in reality, it doesn't have all of the functions and may as well be HDMI 2.0.

HDMI 2.1 standardization is a mess.  I been in a market for a new receiver lately and it even worse then figuring out what on a monitor

Let take something like the Onkyo tx-rz50

It have 3 40gbs HDMI 2.1 ports and 3 24gbs HDMI 2.1 ports.  48gbs at the moment do not exist in the receiver world.  If you look at the product listing, websites etc there is no indication that all 6 HDMI ports are not identical.  The only place you can tell is on a single page a couple hundred pages into the manual where it list what supported on each HDMI port.  It still don't list speed but you can guess by what feature set they allow.

Then you got Yamaha who low ends have 24gbs that originally did not even work right and required a board swap but there high end receivers A4A and higher have all 40gbs HDMI ports in theory but not enabled at moment because they not release a firmware update to enable hdmi 2.1 features that require that much bandwidth.  The date on that firmware update been delayed multiple times so who knows when it come out.

It not even completely the manufactures fault because 4 years after the spec release the HDMI Forum still not release Compliance Test specifications for all the features....

I ended up giving up and bought something that can take earc from tv and convert it to hdmi audio so I can run audio through my old receiver that don't have earc only regular arc which not good enough for my sound setup and run video directly into the TV 4 hdmi 2.1 ports that actually support everything including earc to send to converter.  I revisit receivers again in 2023.  That converter was also not cheap at $188 but rather spend that then deal with a 2k receiver that I don't even know will do everything I need.

Yea pretty much. When I saw the new line up of 4k monitors having HDMI 2.1, I was pretty excited until some of the monitor sites mentioned the 24gbs bandwidth of some of the monitors. The logic from the manufacturer was that users can use DSC with HDMI to get over the limitation but the problem is not every device supports that and if you are charging nearly $1000 for an IPS 4k monitor, they really should have included full bandwidth HDMI. Luckily the monitor I ended up going with does have full bandwidth HDMI 2.1 with all of it's goodies but still quite shameful that this standard is pretty meaningless and you gotta really dig into it to make sure you are getting all the perks.

A remastered version of Scrapland was released on Steam. I have fond memories of this game.

Fanatical's winter sale has started. Wasteland 3 is the current Star Deal at 70% off.

Toyota thinks THEY own your car.

Not related to PC per say but it's quite insane none the less. The summary is that Toyota cars have this feature where you can remote start the car however it requires you to pay a subscription in order to use it. Now there are other car brands that require a subscription to use a remote start function but the key difference is that with other brands, you generally have to install an app onto your phone and it talks to their servers which then talks to your car and starts it up. With Toyota, the remote start only talks to your car. So the subscription service for this function makes no sense because companies like Honda have the very same function that is included with the purchase.

Next thing we know, Toyota's gonna be pulling this shit off when your sub expires mid-trip:

I had a feeling this was going to happen though. For some years now we've had subscription movie streaming, and for years we've had subscription MMO's and other services (like Gamepass and console online services) for some time, so I guess the other industries of the world are like "why don't we do that for all our shit?".

World is gonna get bleak if everyone in every other industry decides they want to turn everything into a sub service model, where we don't own everything and constantly have to pay a fee, or it gets taken away from us/become utterly useless.

Mankind, in its arrogance and self-delusion, must believe they are the mirrors to God in both their image and their power. If something shatters that mirror, then it must be totally destroyed.

Yea exactly. It's quite the shame cause not only are the car subscriptions BS cause the base price is the same, you are just adding a subscription on top but also that cars are a necessity these days and you can't live without one. Who knows what's next.

I mean, we're already paying a premium for water from select brands, which I've always thought of as complete bs, then you've got US hospitals paying more than the EU (healthcare for certain injuries/treatment is free in some parts of the world, as it should be), top it off with the increase os snack foods in the UK, despite said snack foods containing less than their OG product value from the 80's.

My folks thought I was cray for noticing these sorts of changes over time, but we really do be heading toward that dystopian future of mega corps just charging more for less, and turning what was once expected into a sub fee.

Not much we can do about it until the masses really wake up to it though, but I guess since we've gotten this far, the corps will continue getting away with most of it, because they love playing cat & mouse with consumer tolerance (Activision's favourite pastime, and now SE's).

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't wait for HDMI2.1 receivers but just went with one supporting eARC when I bought my LG C9 two years ago.

I did consider just buying a receiver with earc as my current receiver 10 years old now and I been wanting to upgrade to ATMOS setup.  I already got the ceiling speakers installed for it.  I decided against it because my current receiver from a audio stand point works great and support all formats needed for 5.1 setup.  A equivalent receiver that does 5.1.4 going to cost me around 2k.

If I going to spend that kind of money I rather wait for something that I can also run video through so for now my ceiling speakers will remain unused and I bought one of these https://www.thenaudio.com/product/sharc-earc-audio-converter/ so I can get audio to my current receiver.

I dunno, anyone could just nab it on GoG/Steam or even the Switch, and not have to register to Uplay.
