Here's what's coming in EVE Online's Phoebe expansion, and beyond

Comments3

CCP have just dumped a megaton of information about the new features in the upcoming EVE Online "Phoebe" expansion, as well as what’s to come as we head into 2015. Phoebe will introduce the long awaited “unlimited skill queue”, allowing players to queue up year’s worth of skill training at a time. There’s also new exploration content aimed at rewarding skilled probers, and new tech II weapons - dubbed “glass cannon weapons” - that offer considerable firepower, but at a cost.

Meanwhile, CCP have big plans for December’s “Rhea” patch. A lot of it is top secret stuff, but CCP teased two new ships - the “TUG” freighter-sized ship hauler and Tech III Tactical Destroyers - with a slew of major model reworks.

Londinium's burning in this new Total War: Attila siege battle trailer

Comments5

The next Total War game, Attila, is going to be exceedingly good at burning things if this new trailer is anything to go by. Creative Assembly more aptly call it “Dynamic Fire Simulation”: fires can break out from burning projectiles, and spread from building to building according to the weather conditions.

Sieges themselves now possess multiple “escalation states” too. Conduct your attack early, and you’ll face the full might of the defenders; with robust walls and high morale. If you prolong your siege however, the environment and defenders will slowly start to wilt; things may be already burning before you fire a single arrow.

Killing Floor celebrates Halloween with evil, demented killer toys and new maps

Comment

Tripwire are up to their old tricks again by releasing two new maps and an official mod pack to celebrate that scary time of year, Halloween. Club Cladestine is a nightclub themed map, but you won’t find people dancing. Instead it’s filled with torture devices that have been put to good use by its new zombie denizens.

There’s also Devil’s Dollhouse, which when combined with the new Toy Master Mod creates a meddlesome concoction. Zeds are replaced by bloodlusted toys of twisted porcelain varieties. If you want to check it out for yourself, we’ve got the trailer below.

How Battlefield Hardline has got better since beta

Comments1

We’d originally expected to be holding down left-click to read a perp’s rights to them before Christmas - but early beta feedback was so sharp-tongued that Battlefield Hardline was delayed into 2015.

There’ll be another Battlefield Hardline beta before launch, in which we’ll get to test everything Visceral have changed about the shooter since June. Executive producer Steve Papoutsis says we can expect new approaches to all sorts: especially heavy weapons, faction distinction and recoil.

Minecraft has now sold 17 million copies on PC

Comment

The newly Microsoft-owned Minecraft passed 17 million sales over the weekend, Mojang announced in characteristically casual fashion this morning.

“Not sure if this continues to be noteworthy,” tweeted Minecraft Realms developer Marc Watson.

Of course, Minecraft sales are noteworthy as long as we can drudge up the figures of famous games it's outsold. Let's get to it.

XCOM: Enemy Within Long War mod ramps up the difficulty till you cry

Comments1

The developers of Long War, a mod for XCOM: Enemy Within, aren’t messing around. They’ve “removed every bit of code [they] can find that cheats for the player on the lower difficulties.” They’re looking to make XCOM more difficult and the alien invasion more realistic.

Some of the changes they’ve managed to make are incredible, especially considering Firaxis haven’t released any mod tools.

Clockwork Empire update means stew no longer requires eyes to boil

Comment

You’ve probably heard the saying that a watched pot never boils. Not in Clockwork Empires, at least, not initially. Workers had to stare at pots, for them to cook, presumably radiating some kind of dark, Lovecraftian energy. However, irradiated stew is no longer! The latest Clockwork Empires patch means cooks don’t have to intently watch the pot.

Other changes mean that colonists will no longer have conversations with cultist murderers and the enemy AI's been overhauled, too.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - Catching up with Cassandra

You’ll probably remember Dragon Age: Inquisition’s Cassandra as Varric’s irritable interrogator from Dragon Age II. While she missed all the action in that game, instead playing catch up, in Inquisition she’ll be one of your party members.

BlizzCon 2014 is close, kicking off on November 7th, and to celebrate the big fan event, Blizzard and ESL have teamed up to create the BlizzCon ESL Fantasy League for StarCraft II and Hearthstone.

While Hearthstone and StarCraft pros will be duking it out at BlizzCon, you can relax at home, on the sofa, and set up your own fantasy team. If you make the right picks, you might end up winning some prizes, too. You won’t be showered in gold, but you will be able to win a plushie. The latter hurts less when it lands on you.

Well, it’s absent unless you fork over £23.99 for the season pass, which will also net you some bonus missions and a PvP mode.

In The Evil Within, even gods can be decapitated

Comment

The Evil Within’s PC port might have been a bit guff, but the debug wizardry ensures that it is at least a bit better than the console versions.

It’s rubbish that you need to use it to change the aspect ratio (by zooming in, of all things) or unlock the framerate, but you can also cheat, and that’s nice. One cheat transforms Detective Castellanos into an immortal, which has an unexpected side effect.

Uber cancels its Human Resources Kickstarter: "We simply don’t have the human resources"

Comment

Uber Entertainment has been unable to replicate Planetary Annihilation’s Kickstarter success with the studio’s new RTS project, Human Resources. As of today, the Kickstarter has been cancelled.

Human Resources would have seen giant robots and elder gods fighting over Earth in a bid for domination. While the promise of two ridiculous, asymmetrical factions; destructible cities, where buildings can be ripped out of the ground and used as weapons; and battles featuring hundreds of units intrigued backers enough to net the campaign almost $400k in pledges, it looked like the project wasn’t going to come close to its $1.4 million goal.

Jetcar Combat-o-racing: Quantum Rush Champions

By Alice O'Connor on October 20th, 2014 at 4:00 pm.

While futuristic racing is defined by Wipeout for many, for me it’ll always be dear old MegaRace. My futuristic racing comes as a dystopian TV show starring campy presenter Lance Boyle in reels of reels of full-motion video. Pre-rendered 3D! FMV! Prizes! Even the name is exciting: MegaRace! It’s a bit pants, of course. I recognise I have a problem, and that jetcars are probably my salvation.

Quantum Rush first caught our compound eye last year with its pretty jetcars and wacky idea of Kickstarting a free-to-play multiplayer game (which, obviously, failed). Developers GameArt Studio persevered and in July released Quantum Rush Online, and now have followed up with singleplayer-only jetcar combat-o-racer Quantum Rush Champions. It’s on Steam Early Access for £3.99, which is more appealing to my hovercar hankerings than a F2P oddity.

Spelunky’s Creator Is Writing A Book About Spelunky

By Graham Smith on October 20th, 2014 at 6:00 pm.

I’ve had a copy of ZZT by Anna Anthropy – a book about the game of the same name – kicking around for six months, but I haven’t yet had the time to read it. That prompted me to almost instantly scroll by news that the same publisher was Kickstarting a second series of books in the same vein: small, independently published, and each focused on a different game.

Then I saw that one of the books in the second series is about Spelunky. And it’s written by Derek Yu, the creator of Spelunky. And the project is already funded anyway.

Fighting the inevitable in Stardock's Sorcerer King

Comments1

Brad Wardell describes Sorcerer King simply: “You’re Gondor, and Sauron has the Ring. He got Frodo.”

It’s an interesting place to start a fantasy 4X: you’ve already lost the familiar contest for supremacy. Another faction triggered the endgame and relegated everyone else to an historical footnote. That ruler has become the Sorcerer King.

Meanwhile, you’re the last holdout, trying to mount a resistance with just one city against an empire. To borrow another phrase from Wardell, it’s The Alamo as a 4X strategy game.

It will never end: Assassin's Creed Chronicles will be a series

Comments2

If there’s one rule that Ubisoft has, it’s that everything needs to be a series. This rule has been taken to new extremes with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China. The side-scrolling spin off is a piece of standalone DLC, and Alex Amancio, Unity’s creative director, has confirmed that it’s just the first of a series.

That’s right - even DLC spin-offs have to become franchises. Thankfully, it does actually look rather interesting. That might not be the case five or ten games later, though.

Paranautical Activity developer steps down after threatening Gabe Newell

Comments7

Death threats are a pretty terrible way to blow off some steam, especially during a time when people are being chased out of the industry by them. But with Code Avarice’s Mike Maulbeck, who threatened Gabe Newell after his game, Paranautical Activity, was mislabeled as Early Access on Steam, the inverse has happened.

Maulbeck’s outburst led to Paranautical Activity being removed from Steam, and in an apology written on the Code Avarice blog, the developer explains that he’s stepped down and will no longer have anything to do with either the game or the company.

Rodina is No Man's Sky on a budget

Comments2

Rodina has been around for quite a while, squirreled away in Steam's Early Access folder, hoovering up incremental updates like a hungry piglet.

It's an open-world space explorer in which you fly around a procedurally generated solar system collecting gadgets that allow you to visit and explore planets with ever more hostile environments, seamlessly ascending from surface to orbit and beyond.

You can walk around inside your ship too, pressing buttons, using computers and putting out fires, and all without loading screens. It's like an extremely pared down No Man's Sky, except better, because you can play it right now.

Putting on the deerstalker and becoming Sherlock Holmes in Crimes and Punishments

Comment

When I admit my love for Frogwares’ Sherlock Holmes adventure games, I make it sound like I’m confessing a secret vice. It’s a little silly. Yes, they’re a bit stiff, often obtuse, and occasionally quite odd, but they offer refreshing traditional consulting detective adventures in the face of the character’s constant reinvention.

There’s Sherlock reimagined as, well, Robert Downey Jr., as a recovering heroin addict in modern New York, and as a tall man-child, but I’ll take Jeremy Brett’s portrayal over those any day of the week, and that’s what the adventure games are like. But occasionally there’s Elder God cults and Jack the Ripper.

Holmes’ latest escapade, Crimes and Punishments, is probably the best of the lost. It’s trite marketing, but when Frogwares said that it would let you become Sherlock Holmes, it was a statement of intent that the developer has really tried to follow through on. And I blooming love it.

Though you can get seedless jam. Okay, let’s call it a tie and get move on to more important and relevant things: an Unreal Engine 4 jam is kicking off this weekend, and the top three entries will get a free one month subscription. Since $20 isn’t a lot, it’s mostly for fun.
