Yea I think they need to take a step back and have an evolution of the switch than another complete redesign. Don't pull a Switch U so to speak. If they can keep the switch formula, improve up on a few things (especially the joy cons) and have that Nvidia hardware that we are all hoping for, the next Switch can be incredible.

It's also pretty clear that third parties want the hardware so they can port games to it otherwise Capcom wouldn't have made Nintendo to have 4GB of Vram instead of just 2GB. Imagine the insanity if the Switch had only 2GB to work with when it launched but it's also why it's hard to trust them. Hopefully they learned their lesson because man... If Nintendo goofs up the type of opportunity they have with Nvidia. Like I'd face plant so hard.

I just hope that their next system puts more focus on AAA support, because even some indie titles (3D based) are picking up the requirements and at times looking blurry on the Switch compared to the PC/other consoles.

If they mess up and try to keep their next system cheaper, then they'll end up facing another Wii U scenario, where 3rd parties go back to abandoning them again. Switch already feels like it's more dated and it only released back in 2017, not even a full 5 years and I already wish they had new hw (which tells me personally that they chose poorly for Switch in the first place, as no console should age that fast).

Doesn't help that the Switch didn't leverage the latest and greatest nVidia Tegra SoC on it's release... So it was already outdated. Pascal could have offered 50% more performance at the same powerlevel and not added much to the cost.

But that 4GB of LPDDR4 1600Mhz memory is NOT doing the switch any favors in 2021, that bandwidth is limiting fillrate and keeping resolutions low and developers are struggling to work with 3GB of work-space. (As the OS gobbles a chunk.)

The Switch is a fantastic device, it's just not aging well visually, especially as we venture forth into the Global Illumination/Ray Tracing era.

This is why the only shooters I still play are either pre-halo (Unreal Tournament most prominently) or Serious Sam, who stayed largely the same since it's inception.

And while I like Doom 2016, having to essentially finish off the ennemies in melee in the end is to me like needing to switch to resort to the shield gun in UT for the final kill, which is absolutely against my very concept of shooters. Without that feature, Doom 2016 would be much more enjoyable to me than it is in it's current form.

Ah yeah Serious Sam brilliant game. I go back to Half Life series every once in a while. And have CS Go in my play rotation. I think it boils down to feel mostly. No crappy mouse acceleration, ADS or other gimmicks.

That the original or 2004? Loved 2004 back when it was fresh. The guns were great as were the the DM and the survival modes. Tried the newer UT and Quake Live but couldn't get them - the hero classes type of Live was really off-putting. All that said, am cautiously looking forward to seeing the new Quake, hopefully that brings back some of the arena shooters of old (a little skeptical as I'm not a fan of Machine Games, games).

Idd glory kill ruined the flow for me. Watching the same pre-canned animation for the umpteenth time gets old, fast. And I hate the way it encourages you to do it to regain health and preserve ammo. That's the reason why I'm reluctant to play Eternal where its essential to do and forces you to play in a particular way due to lack of ammo - the whole point of having fun in playing an FPS for me is shooting and not having to worry about ammo every 5 secs.

Not sure if using the X2 would have resulted in that much more performance, (pure GPU performance was ~50% higher, but when both CPU and GPU were used, the margin tended to be much lower between the two chips iirc) but it would have been the better choice for sure, especially with it's larger memory bandwidth.

I expect NVidia to create a new Tegra chip soon. Not just for the Switch, but also for the Jetson Nano and NVidia Shield devices, which use the same chips as the Switch does. In fact, I believe that without the chip crunch NVidia would already have done it and it would have been the basis of the new OLED model.

It won't be much more than a die-shrinked X2 probably (to 12nm out for originally 16nm), but that alone could result in up to 50% more performance compared to the current model. Most interesting would be that the memory could be increased to 8GB on the next model, which could definitely help some games.

Both of them. In fact, I sometimes even prefer UT2003 because I have difficulties differencing the Link Gun with the ASMD Shock Rifle in UT 2004 while in 2003 they had very different designs.

Oh nice. Ngl been a while since I played those games and can't remember much on 2003 so I can't comment the differences between guns. Was there a big change? On another note the Flak Cannon remains one my GOT (and memorable) guns ever, nothing more satisfying than blasting someone into giblets at CQ and carefully predicting and shooting and well placed explosive rounds.

You kinda peaked my interest into getting 2004 lol. I read that the there's still an active community for the game.

Ah, somebody who want to get the "Flak Monkey" moniker at the match results table ;)

Yes, it's still very active. I've grown pretty slow with time, so I can't keep up with those players. I still try sometimes, but I mostly play with bots these days ^^

The Tuesday news, all in one post:

SALES /PLAYER COUNT & DEALS

As New World goes live in North America, it already has half a million players
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/as-new-world-goes-live-in-north-america-it-already-has-450000-players/
New World is out now, and it seems players are ready for a new MMO: the game is currently sitting pretty with 520,000 concurrent players, according to SteamDB's numbers. That's a hell of a result for a game that isn't free-to-play, and is basically a big grind. People do love a good grind.

GOG sees the release of two old Microids games, "Agatha Christie - Hercule Poirot: The First Cases" and "Murder Mystery Machine" and, to celebrate it, they've come up with the Microids Adventure Week Sale that will last until October 4th: https://www.gog.com/partner/microids_adventure

Steam has several new deals, including the new weeklong deals:

The Humble Store has two new sales:

And Fanatical has a new Star Deal: Planet Zoo is going to be 67% off during the next 48 hours: https://www.fanatical.com/en/game/planet-zoo.

SOFTWARE & DRIVERS

Steam will still let you revert to old game builds, despite beta concerns
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/steam-beta-suggests-you-wont-be-able-to-revert-to-old-game-builds-much-longer/
The option to revert to an older build of a game has been an undocumented feature of Steam for a while now, but as SteamDB notes, the latest beta changes how the client connects to its content delivery network, removing the access customers had to previous versions of their games. Update: Valve has responded to claims that Steam will soon disable the option to download previous versions of games. In a statement provided to PC Gamer, a spokesperson clarifies the company is not planning to disable access to older versions of software.

MODS, EMULATORS & FAN PROJECTS

This 2.8GB Dark Souls 3 Mod lets you become some of the game’s bosses
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/this-2-8gb-dark-souls-3-mod-lets-you-become-some-of-the-games-bosses/
Modder ‘thefirsthunterapprendice’ is currently working on a pretty cool mod for Dark Souls 3 that lets you become some of the game’s bosses. Now do note that this isn’t a skin mod. Instead, players can now control the bosses themselves and use their weapons.
Unfortunately, we don’t have enough information about this mod. From what I could find, Elite Knight’s Original Weapons currently features the Farron Undead Legion, Lorian, Slave Knight Gael, and Nameless King. It also features some weapons from other bosses.
>> You can download it from here /Google Drive).

This 6.7GB Mod overhauls all landscape textures in Fallout 3 & Fallout New Vegas
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/this-6-7gb-mod-overhauls-all-landscapes-textures-in-fallout-3-fallout-new-vegas/
Modder ‘Spiffyskytrooper’ has released a new HD Texture Pack that aims to overhaul all of the landscape textures in both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas.
(...)
This pack comes with three quality presets, “High”, “Medium”, and “Low”. High is almost entirely 2K, whereas Low is almost entirely 1K. Lastly, Medium is a mix of 2K and 1K.
Now what’s cool here is that you can use it in either Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas. Or in both of them. Thus, this will be ideal for those that want better textures, but cannot bother downloading individual packs for these two games. Furthermore, this pack supports all DLCs for both of these games.
>> Available from Nexus Mods.

The Witcher 3 Mod adds two Dark Souls-inspired combat mechanics
https://www.dsogaming.com/mods/the-witcher-3-mod-adds-two-dark-souls-inspired-combat-mechanics/
Modder ‘Mugi-Defalt’ has released a pretty cool mod for The Witcher 3 that brings to it two Dark Souls-inspired combat mechanics.
Going into more details, this mod allows you to backstab and kill stronger enemies than you. Moreover, it adds a counter-attack that can instantly kill weaker enemies.
Surprisingly enough, these two combat tweaks work wonderfully in The Witcher 3. In order to showcase them, the modder released the following video.
>> You can get it from Nexus Mods.

Activision sued by another federal agency, settles lawsuit for $18 million
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/activision-sued-by-another-federal-agency-immediately-settles-lawsuit-for-dollar18-million/
Earlier today the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard after a three year investigation into alleged workplace discrimination. The EEOC's lawsuit says the agency issued Activision a letter on June 15—nearly a full month before California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing lawsuit was issued—and according to the Wall Street Journal, the parties have been in talks since.
After the EEOC's lawsuit emerged, Activision issued a press release announcing an agreement with the federal agency. The agreement involves the creation of an "$18 million fund to compensate and make amends to eligible claimants," while any remaining cash will be given to relevant charities.

You call it gimmicks, they call it new forms of gameplay .

All in honesty, I think that this is some kind of vicious circle (or chicken and egg) situation. Nintendo went with the wiimotes, the first "gimmick", because they couldn't compete in the hardware depantment and had to try something different with a weaker machine. The problem is that nowadays we don't know if they keep doing that because they think that they need that differential to offset their hardware limitations, or the hardware limitations come because they focus too much on the incorporation of some gimmick.

In any case, I'd like to think that Nintendo is smart enough to realize that with some DLSS capable hardware, they would no longer need to develop their games with two resolutions and setting in mind. Just one set for the handheld mode and then turn the DLSS on when hooked to a TV. That is an improvement that even them would appreciatte.

In any case, Nintendo's decision still depends on what Nvidia offers them because, right now, the only SoC from Nvidia that's already in production and that could be a somewhat viable option for a console, without counting on the Tegra X2, is the Tegra Xavier. The good news is that Xavier uses the Volta architecture that was the first to include Tensor Cores, but the bad news is only has 48 1st gen Tensor Cores, which would be hardly enough to do the task, let alone think about ray tracing.

So well, we're in a situation where, as far as we know, Nvidia doesn't have a SoC for Nintendo with the features we would like to see and, even if they did, we don't know if Nintendo would choose it over a cheaper, but with limited capabilities, chip.

Yea that's true. Alex from DF did do some interesting theorizing to see whether or not a "Switch Pro" would be able to do DLSS. The video overall is interesting if you have some time to kill:

The results are quite insane!

Thanks for the video with very interesting results. The bigest problem in this whole theory, tho, is Nintendo actually going with an SoC that's so new that it hasn't even launched yet (only been announced as far as I know).

That said, I've been looking at Orin and found the article that WCCFTech did about it and found this excerpt:

"In a slide shared by Dylan522P over at his Twitter feed, various DRIVE configurations for the Orin SOC are listed. It seems like Orin will have a few TDP / workload-optimized variants with the base 1-Camera variant offering 36 TOPs at 15W, the 4-Camera variant offering 100 TOPs at 40W, a 2 chip variant offering 400 TOPs at 130W and the top-end 2 Orin + 2 discrete GPU variant offering up to 2000 TOPs at 750W. It looks like the TDP of the 200 TOPs, single-SOC lies somewhere around 60-70 Watts."

With the 1-Camera variant as the base of the console, Nvidia will work to do to turn those 36 TOPs at 15W to 20 TOPs for 5W, and using a more advanced process node isn't feasable as Orin is supposed to use Samsung's 8nm.

Also, back in June when everybody assumed Nintendo would reveal the Switch Pro, Kopite posted this:

If we trust him when it comes to Nvidia GPU, we should also give him the same level of trust when it comes to this, right?
