From the Wolfenstein requirements news:

  • 64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8
  • Intel Core i7 or equivalent AMD
  • 4 GB System RAM
  • 50 GB free HDD space
  • GeForce 460, ATI Radeon HD 6850
  • High Speed Internet Connection
  • Steam account and activation required

Bethesda says that these are the requirements "necessary" to run Wolfenstein, suggesting that they are the minimum requirements. The 4GB of RAM and a GeForce 460 or Radeon HD 6850 recommendation reinforces this.

I guess I can't play it, my 5850 is starting to limit me... although I know it basically performs the same as the 6850. But that CPU ... like an i7 4770 is the same as an i7 920, right?

Well, there really isn't an "AMD Equivalent" to a Haswell/Sandy Bridge-E/Ivy-Bridge-E i7 processor, so one can assume they're talking about a nahelem (I.E. Core i7 920/860) derivative as a baseline.
For AMD that would mean a Phenom 2 x4/x6 or newer and any quad-core Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell or newer/better would be more than enough.

You *could* get away with a heavily overclocked Core 2 Quad or Athlon 2/Phenom 1 though as a Core 2 Quad @ 3.6-4ghz is going to be faster than an i7 860.

As for the GPU, overclock! :P
Things are cooling down in Australia as we are about to enter Winter, so my clocks can go a little bit higher. :D

ZeniMax claims Carmack took VR technology with him when he left id Software for Oculus

Comments9

Update: John Carmack responded to the allegations on Twitter, saying ZeniMax doesn't "own VR".

Just when it looks like people are calming down about Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus VR, the Oculus Rift developer hits another bump in the road. A fairly substantial one involving lots of lawyers.

ZeniMax Media has sent claims to Oculus VR accusing John Carmack of taking intellectual property from id Software, which ZeniMax is the parent company of, when he left the developer for Oculus VR.

Katee "Starbuck" Sackhoff to play EVE Valkyrie lead

Comments3

Hello! I’m in Iceland for EVE Fanfest 2014. I’m eating a croissant and looking at a mountain. I’m listening to Sigur Ros and crying. I have eaten a puffin and a whale. The hot topic of the day however is very much spaceships, and to that end CCP have just dropped a steaming load of EVE Valkyrie news.

Here’s what they’ve said. The first-person, virtual reality cockpit space shooter has been migrated from the relatively ramshackle environment of the Unity engine to the even glossier Unreal Engine 4. The latest build boosts the choice of ships from “one” to “more than one”. And the game’s main character, the leader of the Valkyries herself, will be voiced by none other than Katee “Starbuck” Sackhoff. Her out of Battlestar Galactica.

Why Wildstar is the true heir to World of Warcraft's legacy

Comments2

Five years into Wildstar’s nine (nine!) year development, the team at Carbine Studios hit a wall. “We were making a pretty average MMO. It was a boring WoW clone, effectively,” says producer Stephen Frost. We looked at it and went, ‘this is not what we want to do.’”

The team hit the reset button. Half a decade’s worth of work was thrown out. “We wanted to make something different.”

The result is the first MMO I’ve felt that can actively improve on World of Warcraft. Maybe, even in some ways surpass it.

Acquiescence: Trion Worlds' shooty MMO Defiance will go free-to-play in June

Comment

Defiance arrived last year as an MMO tie-in to the SyFy drama series of the same name, and begged the question: what if one flies while the other fails? We never got to know, as both parts of the would-be multimedia extravaganza dropped limply to earth after launch, clacking together like marbles in a net.

But now Defiance will have its chance to fly again, unshackled by a TV program nobody’s watching. It’s going free-to-play.

No One Lives Forever trademark filing hints at possible re-release

Omri Petitte at 12:41 on 02 May 2014

As we reported last year, the rights to Monolith's 2000 comedy spy shooter No One Lives Forever dropped off the radar after Activision proverbially shrugged its shoulders as to the whereabouts of the game's ownership. Now, Siliconera has exposed some new intel on the franchise's trademark from a number of recent filings by Night Dive Studios, a classic PC game republisher. This isn't direct confirmation of NOLF's return to the field, but it sparks hope for the game's licensing troubles.

BioShock Infinite's Columbia appears in the skies of Minecraft

What if Elizabeth tore open a rift, but instead of yanking out a crate of guns or a Gatling-wielding automaton, she withdraws a square-shaped chunk of grass before chucking it at your face with a "Booker, catch!"? I'd sputter in confusion, but that probably also means BioShock Infinite's heroine found her way to the Minecraft-ed version of the floating city of Columbia. Constructed by architect group TheVoxelBox of the Planet Minecraft fansite, the city boasts superb detail and personality worthy of the game's best custom creations.

Also, we may not get 20nm GPU's late this year/early next year, TSMC is having issues, so probably end up with a 3rd Generation GPU on the old 28nm. :(

Gun Monkey developer's advice to indies: "don’t make multiplayer games"

Comments2

Gun Monkeys is a barrel of laughs. Something to play for an hour every now and again with a mate.  It sold enough to cover costs and got good reviews, but Size Five Games’ Dan Marshall’s advice to indie devs contemplating a multiplayer game is simple: don’t do it.

f you’re an indie developer, don’t make multiplayer games,” Marshall says in a blog post. “There are exceptions, naturally, but by-and-large the number of customers you’re ever likely to get simply isn’t there to support it.”

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare micro-transactions are cheap but pointless

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is due out on June 24th. It’s also grown micro-transactions, likely thanks to a change in water and plant food. EA announced the addition to the not free-to-play game last month, and it’s already come into effect.

The cost of in-game currency is not astronomical, nor is buying this stuff necessary to progress. But it’s worth remembering that Garden Warfare already costs money to buy.

Both can be downloaded from the Battle.net account page or here if you don’t have an account. If you do grab them from your account page, switch the region to Americas, no matter what region you’re actually in.

Former Civilization IV Lead On Mars Game, Revitalizing RTS

By Nathan Grayson on May 2nd, 2014 at 9:00 pm.

Mohawk Games is an excellent name for a company. And so it is that former Civilization IV lead designer and Spore man Soren Johnson approaches me sporting the company haircut. It’s a recent trim job for the old headshrub, he tells me, but he wears it well. However, the brain beneath the mohawk – the mind behind some of strategy gaming’s greatest greats – is the real main attraction here. Johnson’s goal is to design “core strategy games” in conjunction with Civ V art director Dorian Newcomb and in partnership with Galactic Civilizations (no relation) developer Stardock.

First on the docket? A still unnamed Mars economy RTS with no units and 13 different resource types. Is it madness? Probably, but it’s the good kind, the kind that drives a man to shave off most of his hair before a business conference, the kind that sounds wicked fun when people exchange fireside tales of their favorite matches.

Go below for a discussion with both men about how the game works, boardgame influences, how videogames might be able to replicate boardgaming’s face-to-face appeal, designing strategy that’s extremely complex but also accessible, release plans, and heaps more.

Terry Defence: Freaking Meatbags Makes Humans Useful

By Alice O'Connor on May 2nd, 2014 at 6:00 pm.

Anyone who’s been given professional authority over a human being can tell you they’re awful. Humans are lazy, stupid, and biologically inferior. Freaking Meatbags knows how to whip them into shape. With so much mining to do, it’s only sensible to forcefully improve the feckless meatbags with science, and it’ll probably make them more useful in fending off all these robot attacks too. Freaking Meatbags is a RTS-tower defence-arena shooter-hybrid sort of a game, see.

Come see in a new trailer developers Wild Factor have dropped ahead of the game’s Steam Early Access release later this month.

Call me crazy but I really hope that Unreal Tournament game thats being announced is F2P, with a Team Fortress or Dota business model. Micro transactions honestly don't bother me at all when done right, and often times I'll buy a few things just to throw a bone to the developers.
