Why Wildstar is the true heir to World of Warcraft's legacy
Comments2Five years into Wildstar’s nine (nine!) year development, the team at Carbine Studios hit a wall. “We were making a pretty average MMO. It was a boring WoW clone, effectively,” says producer Stephen Frost. We looked at it and went, ‘this is not what we want to do.’”
The team hit the reset button. Half a decade’s worth of work was thrown out. “We wanted to make something different.”
The result is the first MMO I’ve felt that can actively improve on World of Warcraft. Maybe, even in some ways surpass it.
Acquiescence: Trion Worlds' shooty MMO Defiance will go free-to-play in June
CommentDefiance arrived last year as an MMO tie-in to the SyFy drama series of the same name, and begged the question: what if one flies while the other fails? We never got to know, as both parts of the would-be multimedia extravaganza dropped limply to earth after launch, clacking together like marbles in a net.
But now Defiance will have its chance to fly again, unshackled by a TV program nobody’s watching. It’s going free-to-play.
The hunt is on: Sir, You Are Being Hunted hits v1.0
CommentSandboxy stealth game Sir, You Are Being Hunted has crossed the finish line, making its way from Early Access to v1.0. It’s an extremely British game concerned with things us Brits are usually concerned with, like being hunted down by robots and collecting dead rats.
Until May 8th it’s £12.74/$16.99, and after the promotion it will set you back £14.99/$19.99.
CCP reveals Project Legion; a "reimagining" of Dust 514 on PC
CommentCCP has just revealed Project Legion at this year’s Fanfest. It’s a free to play, first person shooter on the PC which will tie into the EVE Universe. You can compete with other players for loot, and even have opportunities to “betray your friends”. The line between friends and foe will blur as you go deeper into null-sec.
No One Lives Forever trademark filing hints at possible re-release
As we reported last year, the rights to Monolith's 2000 comedy spy shooter No One Lives Forever dropped off the radar after Activision proverbially shrugged its shoulders as to the whereabouts of the game's ownership. Now, Siliconera has exposed some new intel on the franchise's trademark from a number of recent filings by Night Dive Studios, a classic PC game republisher. This isn't direct confirmation of NOLF's return to the field, but it sparks hope for the game's licensing troubles.
BioShock Infinite's Columbia appears in the skies of Minecraft
What if Elizabeth tore open a rift, but instead of yanking out a crate of guns or a Gatling-wielding automaton, she withdraws a square-shaped chunk of grass before chucking it at your face with a "Booker, catch!"? I'd sputter in confusion, but that probably also means BioShock Infinite's heroine found her way to the Minecraft-ed version of the floating city of Columbia. Constructed by architect group TheVoxelBox of the Planet Minecraft fansite, the city boasts superb detail and personality worthy of the game's best custom creations.
MechWarrior Online gets private matchmaking, and a glitch, in latest patch
In a move that could be transformative for competitive players as well as anyone looking to settle a grudge, MechWarrior Online has added a private matchmaking system. Dubbed the "Launch Module" by developer Piranha Games, the free-to-play shooter now offers a variety of options for setting up and carrying out tournaments, leagues, and 1v1 showdowns, depending on a player's level of investment in the game.
