It's not surprising you would say that, imo.

Ok I see what u mean, the huge drought/lack of sales has taken consumer/retailer trust away. ill give a little breakdown of how I see sales goin for the rest of the year. By the end of July there should be roughly 3.3 million Wii U sold. From Aug-Oct there will be a high profile exclusive releasing every 2-3 weeks along with a new marketing campaign. That will give retailers/consumers 3 months of steady flow of games which include Pikmin 3/Luigi U retail/W101/Wind Waker/Party U/possibly Sonic World. I could see sales being 70-100k per week in those 3 months. So by the end of Oct there could be about 4.5 million Wii U sold. During the holidays DKC/Wii Fit/3D Mario combo should be able to push a few systems along with retailer discounts/bundles. 3 million over the holidays doesnt seem too unrealistic, so 7-8 million by the end of the year. Next year i think we will see a price cut to $250 alongside Mario Kart in the Spring then Smash Bros in the summer and Wii Sports+Zelda for the holidays so id say 10m Wii U sold in 2014 is possible. That puts Wii U at 17-18 million by the end of 2014 and only a few million behind GC sales. Edit: As for PS4/One slumps, I dont see them being nearly as bad as Wii U post launch slump but literally every console released in the past 15 years has had a post launch slump outside of PS2 and Wii. DC launched strong then quickly faded into obscurity, GC/XB both launched strong then sales dropped pretty sharply in the beginming of 2002. GBA/DS didnt hit it big until there first redesigns. PS360 sales werent amazing in there first full year. 3DS, Vita, Wii U all had horrible post launch sales. PS4/One will sell well initially this holiday from early adopters but the masses wont flock to them next year due to a majority of 3rd party games being availabe on PS360, so many gamers wont feel the need to upgrade right away and $400-500 is alot for moat people to apend outsise of the holidays. When u factor in 1 year of online, a game, extra controller, ur looking at closer to $600-700. Thats why I think those consoles sales wont be huge in the beginning of next year. |
I would say that is a perfectly legitimate (if slightly optimistic) sales breakdown. It really does require Nintendo to be on the ball regarding advertising for 3-4 times the sales for Aug - Oct though, and given their current neglect I wonder if they are holding back for a certain game or something in particular. Are any of those Aug-Oct games strong enough to build a campaign around, or are they going to try and explain what a Wii U is in general again?
Also, are Nintendo consoles quite front loaded in terms of sales or was that just the Wii? I know they don't bother with long generations so will only be selling the Wii U for 5-6 years, meaning every bad year has more of an effect on total sales. It's just something to consider, as they have less time to catch up compared to Sony or MS.
As for the PS4/One, they probably won't have quite the tough time the Wii U has had (at least not both). I think the Wii U lost a chunk of Wii owners that switched to PS360 in 2011/12, while Sony/MS don't have the same issue as there hasn't been much incentive for PS360 owners to get a Wii U. This combined with quite a long generation are the advantages they have, as is the price compared to last gen (for Sony at least). But yes, continued PS360 support is a disadvantage so it could go either way.

I dont think theres any one huge game to center the campaign around but those 5 exclusives put together should be enough to garner a decent amount of attention. They may also benefit by showing off some of the exclusivr features in ads like off-screen play, assymetrical gameplay, Miiverse, TVii, free online. Literally anything would be better than the launch campaign where theu only showed Mario and played dubstep.
I wouldnt necessarily say Nintendo consoles are front loaded in terms of sales. Wii best year was 08, GC-03, N64-I think 98, so the 2nd full year then sales steadily decline for the next 2-3 years.
And ya ill admit im a bit optimistic but at least its not just blind faith and I have a few decent reasons why I think they will make a nice comeback, im guessing 40-50 million lifetime.

I agree with a lot of what you have said and I have changed my first post accordingly. I honestly hope that your optimism pays off and the Wii U has a good run.
