Forums - Sony - Sony's PlayStation 4 Is Running Modified FreeBSD 9

Why don't they just develop their own OS based around the hardware? They started the PS4 in 2007 wasn't it?

Because they already had a years stable developed core... I mean it's a good option.

In any case only the core (kernel) is used... the UI, drivers, etc are all developed by Sony.

Sony sucks at software if that wasn't apparant. XMB is a great simple OS for TV's, but once on PSP and PS3, it got too crowded, slow, and irrititating.

XMD is BSD based.

I guess it is a similar case to the smartphones right now.  They use android because it is free and good; and there are already plenty of tools for it.  So this OS is free; for what they are doing is good; and as it has more time in the developer space, it has more tools for it.

I really dont know if the OS is good or not, since I have only used in my life Windows, MacOS, and tried android in some phone.

MacOSX is based on freeBSD, if recall correctly.

Just to add Mac OS X, iOS, XMB, etc are all BDS based OS systems.

It is

Based in BSD... freeBSD is a distribution.

And AMD have drives to Mac OS X... I don't why people thinks there are no driver for freeBSD... BTW the driver for a console is way different with direct access to GPU without concurrence with OS.

The drivers in consoles are not developed over the OS because there are no concurrence between OS and Games for the GPU... the driver have direct access to GPU to avoid overhead present in PC drivers.

How much do consoles gain in performance thanks to no overhead?

It's way relation to make this comparison... Camark said one time that with consoles without all PC overhead runs games in the same hardware with twice performance.

But here we are talking only about driver overhead that I guess it's the small overhead to be compared.

Wow! O_O

Will that be true even for next gen?

But if the BSD is free, shouldnt MacOS be free too (similar to android and linux)?  The last time I checked apple website; you needed to pay for the OS update.
