Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Blocks 3DS Flashcard With Latest Firmware Update

A short while ago a functional 3DS flashcard emerged into view that gave people the opportunity to play ROMS on their 3DS.

ROMS are a particularly touchy subject as many do in fact use them as a means of backing up legally owned content. However, the Nintendo DS suffered greatly because of them as many flashcard users downloaded tonnes of games they had not purchased, meaning they did not legally own the software.

Nintendo has said it will be utilising system updates on the 3DS to put a stop to the use of flashcards and it seems it has done just that as the company that manufactured the flashcard has confirmed the latest firmware update has stopped it from being compatible with the 3DS.

Nintendo seems to be on the ball with its defence against illegal behaviour on the 3DS. This is largely down to the fact the 3DS has a much more advanced online infrastructure than the DS did. Thanks to firmware updates such as this, the company can keep on top of restricting illegal activity.

I hope it stays this way for both handhelds, the people who sell these flashcards should be dragged to the court ! (although one has to wonder how beautiful N64 games would look on the Vita )

Hah, knew something like this would happen.

But, but... what about consumer rights and stuff?

Good. A flashcard that works is the last thing the 3ds needs. You just have to look at some of the ds games, especially in europe, such as pokemon black and white to see how much of a negative effect these things can have. I refuse to buy these things simply because i support nintendo and i am happy for them to have my money when a game comes out that interests me.

Is piracy consumer rights? I bet you want DRM on 3ds because of this.

Im assuming he was joking. If not though blocking a flashcard in no way infringes on gamers rights. The only people who buy these things are the people who will never ever pay for a game, thus hurting the very companies they "support".

I'm pretty sure he was mocking people that were pro "DRMless" XB1

I'm just not updating my 3DS firmware... it is only for DS games, not 3DS games, by the way. I'm also going to point out that I use a flashcard because I download all my 3DS games digitally, and between that and having the ability to play my DS games on the card, I don't have to ever change out games. I also physically own all the DS games on the card. Still, I understand why they are doing it.

Yup, i said this would happen when they said they had a flashcart. This is why piracy on consoles is no longer worth it.
They release a new firmware and you either keep to the piracy and lose all online play and digital shop goods including DLC (for example AA5) or you give up on it.
I dont think that are that many people willing to lose all those features.

Good beacuse lets face it maybe 5% of the people who uses these cards have actually bought the game

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)
