Forums - Nintendo - Iwata Admits the Obvious, Nintendo Land is not Wii Sports

Was not having Wii Sports 3 at launch Nintendos largest Wii U mistake?

Both Wii Sports and Nintendo Land were meant to be technical showcases for Wii U and not much more. It just so happens that Wii Sports was appealing and original enough to become a killer app.

The system should of had
1) a different name to make it obvious it was a new console.. wii 2 would have been soooo much better than wiiu.
2) better initial commercials as the ones they ran were confusing and didn't seem fun
3) focus big time on off screen play .. not asymmetric play. That is the bigger selling point.

The balance board sold very well for a $90 accessory all due to wii fit. People will jump on if the right content is shown with it.

I really don't see the big deal with off-TV play either. I mean it's tethered to the console, meaning in most homes you'd can't go into a different room to use it. So if you're using it, why play on a low-res, blurry 5-inch screen when you have a nice high resolution big TV to play on in the same room.

And as much as Nintendo tries to sell the whole "you can play on the controller while the family watches TV!", it's kinda rude to be in a room of people totally disconnected from what they're watching/doing while your face is buried in a game handheld, lol. I just find it to be pretty impractical.

And most US households have multiple TVs, so having to "share" one TV isn't really some big dilemma. I think the whole console concept was made more for Japan, but it's actually probably selling worse in Japan than anywhere else, Japan is all about true handhelds now.

Offscreen is amazing... for me atleast.  It might seem like a small thing, but playing a game on my big screen downstairs for a while, then going to my bed to play for a little longer before I go to sleep is the reason I will buy a lot of multiplats for the system.

Nintendo Land was basically the equivalent of launching the console with "Zelda Four Swords" instead of Wii Sports, and the fact that they didn't include the game with every bundle and charged a full $60 for it separately, not to mention the fact that if you want to play multiplayer you still need all your Wiimotes and Nunchuks (and if you don't, boy do you have some buying to do!), and that all combined for making Nintendo Land a tough sell for many people.

With Wii Sports on the other hand you had everything you needed to fully enjoy it right out of the box for one (relatively) low price, hence the reason why the Wii sold like hotcakes for the first few years of its life.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

The problem with Nintendo Land is not the quality....
It's just not as relatable as Wii Sports...
You don't need a tutorial for tennis or bowling...
Everyone gets how these sports work...
That makes Wii Sports the ultimate pick up and play experience...
Nintendo Land doesn't have that...

Have a nice day...

Nintendo really overestimated the power of their ips with Nintendo Land. Sure, throw all of our biggest franchises in a single game, and it will sell like gangbusters! What they didn't realize is that it is the gameplay that sells games, not simply characters. And while Nintendo Land does have moments of fun gameplay, it is nowhere near as fun and interesting as Wii Sports was.

Yes i think they should have gone with wii u sports 3. The could have still used allot of the ideas from nintendo land while giveing a deeper expanded hd version of wii sports. The would have got allot of peoples attention by giveing them something they were familiar with plus introduceing the gamepad to a much larger audience at the same time. I still think its gonna take another wii sports if they hope to achieve anything close to the success of the wii. After the last six months im sure they are working on it.
