Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Fez’s Phil Fish: “Microsoft Won’t let me Develop for Their Console. But Sony Will”

"I can't do things for free so I hate you"

I don't think it's that he couldn't introduce the patch for free, but the ridiculous amount that Microsoft wants to patch games.  $40,000 for each patch.  More than likely the reason a lot of games don't get patched for the 360 but do for the PS3.  Minecraft developer made a deal with Microsoft since the game would be getting constant patches that if they wanted the game on their system, the patches would need to be free.  You can ask for a source if you want, but you won't get one as I've already tried finding it.

Requiring a publisher in the current digital environment is ridiculous and archaic. All it does is to eat away money that should go to the developer. I have no idea why anyone would defend this, yet I've already seen people try.

I expect another reversal by Microsoft. I know they're trying very hard to please publishers but a publisher is nothing without developers. They'll have to allow self-publishing eventually and on that day I expect a lot of the same people defending their current policy to tell us how great it is that they're changing.

I don't need every single indie game ever to be on the XBOX One. Like someone said earlier, this whole idea that somehow XBLA has a shortage of great indie games is ridiculous to begin with. There are plenty of great indie games there and have been for years. I don't ever even really remember anyone talking about smaller games on PS3 until Flower/Journey (which Sony published) so Microsoft has been doing something right. This quite simply boils down to quantity vs quality.

Also, anyone who has seen Indie Game; The Movie knows this guy is insane. I literally thought the twist at the end of the movie was going to be him killing himself and Fez never actually coming out. The game is also not that great.

Indie developers have never moved consoles or mattered in the long run...why would microsoft care about all of them?

Microsoft has their indie picks, those companies will be well taken care of. Look at State of Decay. 500K sales in a week...10 million dollars.

If you don't make their cut, Microsoft doesn't care about you. Is this wrong? I don't think so...its business.

Phil Fish is an ass, and I know most people would agree with me. I barely care what he thinks on this situation.

Seriously, that documentary with him in it, he looked like a really squirrelly pathetic man with a big ego.

I don't get the hate but I also don't get the props to Sony for once again following Nintendo. Sorry but all the things people are bragging about on PS4 for indies that makes it must own, isn't new. Nintendo has the same policies in place since Wii U launched. One of the reason I bought it is because they give indie devs more control over what they release and they set their own prices and decide when they have sales.
Pokoko, yeah only MS people change their mind. That's why Sony fans made fun of Wii remotes before Move? Live before PS+ which is going to be awesome paying for online. I can tell from your posts here that you support Sony but you cant seriously be pretending that Sony fans are not known for their double standards. It completely sucks til Sony does it, then its going to save gaming, etc. It's happened too often for anyone to deny it

Lol this article only shows his loyalty to Microsoft

“Microsoft Won’t let me Develop for Their Console. But Sony Will”

...And that doesn't really change anything, people still won't be playing this game on Xbox One or PS4.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Greatness Awaits!

can't be bothered with a new thread so on the topic

Skulls of the Shogun dev details unpleasant experience working with Microsoft Studios

Borut Pfeifer of Plush Apocalypse Productions, an indie studio which collaborated on Skulls of the Shogun, has likened the firm’s exclusivity deal for Xbox 360 and Windows 8 phones and tablets as “making a deal with the devil.”

Speaking with RPS, Pfeifer said his studio had it worse than others, stating it “ran into problems that nobody else had got or talked about it.”

“We were launching on three new pieces of the Microsoft ecosystem – their new Async and sort of social multiplayer services, we were launching on Windows 8 and we were launching on the ARM tablets [Surface], ‘ he explained. “Those were new, and we didn’t get them until very late. So all the certification and process issues, we didn’t just have them, or even maybe three times the amount, it was an exponential kind of thing.

“You would have issues on one platform which would actually contradict processes or requirements on another platform. We tried to get the different groups on the same page, to tell them that ‘this needs to be the same’, just to make things better for the next people who had to face it, but yeah, we ran into exponential difficulties on the process side.”

Along with the multiple platform issues, the firm also had to take out a loan to cover payroll due to Microsoft making late payments to the studio.

“We thought ‘well, it’s Microsoft, they have bankroll, they can afford this stuff,’” Pfeifer said, “but because of their processes seeming so fucked up, they couldn’t actually do that. Even though they were partially funding the game to completion, we had to take a loan to cover the fact that they hadn’t yet paid us what they were supposed to.”

Pfeifer wasn’t too pleases with the work relationship between itself and Microsoft Studios, calling the later “institutionally incompetent.”

“When people call Microsoft ‘evil’,” he says, “while I don’t want to defend them, it’s kind of an undeserved compliment. To be evil, you have to have vision, you have to have communication, execution… None of those are traits are things that I would ascribe to Microsoft Studios.

“They came across as though they were institutionally incompetent. I think they’re not really set up to be a decent publisher. I do feel slightly bad saying that, because there were people there who worked hard on our behalf, but at the same time there are systemic problems with the way that division is setup and run.”

Pfeifer said he thinks the culprit for all the problems the firm faced was the main problem was due to “over-stretching.”

“I think maybe Microsoft as a whole were taking on a lot more than they can chew with the Windows 8 launch,” he surmised, “and there were so many different pieces of the puzzle – Xbox Live, different operating system, interfaces, the tablet, all those different technologies.

“Any one of those gets late, it pushes the other ones.”
