Forums - Nintendo - Is Donkey Kong a system seller?

From what i saw i think so. It looked really cool and should get peoples attention. If your stareing at this plus two mario games and pikman. That will probably convince some folks to go for it. The issue that nintendo needs to get resolved asap is that they need to make sure there games are up and running in stores. Hopefully this is not a wide spread problem but in my area none of the local stores have a wii u up and running for people to try out and we have quite a few. They all seem to have every other system up and going but no wii u. Not sure if there afraid of the gamepad getting damaged or what but its a huge problem for nintendo if its wide spread. They should at least have a looping video feed near there consoles showing off the latest games

You could be right. If someone looks hard enough, they'll find excuses for why each and every 2013 game couldn't change the fortunes for the Wii U.

You're probably going to reply to this with "case in point" or something along those lines, but seriously, it's plain to see why none of Wii U's 2013 games are big hardware movers; Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 are niche, DKC:TF is one of a surplus of platformers, 3D World is the 4th Mario platformer in 2 years and looks plain uninspired.

That said, you really don't think their combined power will improve Wii U's situation? I find that hard to believe. They're not going to turn it into the Wii, but they'll definitely boosts its sales out of Vita territory.

Maybe a bit, but I'm not sure. I know I bought my Wii partly because of DKCR, but would I buy a new console for a second iteration? I don't think so. However it helps, it's a supporting arguement. If I buy my Wii U for X, DKCR will be one of the first games I get.

The problem I see with this DKC is it doesn't really take advantage of the system too much. The DKC games on the SNES were the best looking 16-bit games, and even DKCR was among the better looking Wii games.

The Wii U version though looks good, but nothing that special, it looks like they just re-used the Wii engine, beefed it up a bit, bumped the resolution to HD, and went from there.

GameCube was similar, it was always "wait for Mario Sunshine!" then "wait for Metroid Prime!" then "wait for Zelda!". I think people gave up after Zelda couldn't move the system.

Nintendo needs something other than Mario/Zelda/DKC/Mario Kart/Smash to break out for them. Wii Fit/Sports is what drove the Wii to a massive userbase, but those were fads and can't be sequelized forever the way Nintendo would like them to.

Thats how I see it, none of these games individually will be huge hardware boosters but theres about 10 quality exclusives and about 10 AAA multiplats (not late ports) coming from Aug-Dec plus a new marketing campaign and plenty of holiday deals/bundles should give it a strong holiday season. A price cut in April alongside Mario Kart 8 will surely cause a big boost then Smash Bros a few months later. I see Wii U holding its own very well for the next few years.

Yeah, considering Retro's history of system-pushing graphics, it is disappointing to see how modest Tropical Freeze's visuals are. This is the first game from them that won't rank among the target system's most graphically accomplished games. Looks like it started as a Wii game on the DKCR engine, then they punched it up to 720p, added fur effects to DK, upgraded the water effects, and left the rest as is.

That said, I still think it looks visually pleasing; it retains DKCR's quirky, off-kilter geometry and characters, the DKC series' vibrant colour pallette, and the 60fps all Retro games adhere to.

Waiting until April 2014 to make a strong push is way too late IMO, people will already have made up their mind that this is a lame duck console. That perception gets stronger every month actually, the more Nintendo just sits there and twiddles their thumbs doing nothing but waiting for Mario 3D World in December.

Nintendo's thumb-twiddling for the first half of 2013 already caused heavy damage, very bad management that was.

I'm glad someone made a thread about this topic its going through my head recently. The youtuber Furious Francis had an interesting take on this, that the term system seller doesn't really need to just mean it will sell millions of copies, but simply a game will be able to cause people to go out and buy the system; so that could be many a game depending on the person your talking too. Anyway here's the video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBGnYvTSEQU
