Installs were needed because of long access times to cut down on loading.
I already predicted the day tha they said 8gb that we would see the end of load times.
Suddenly, every game seems to be open world with no loading.

Xb1 requires installs because of drm, not to improve performance. They also said they wanted the xb1 to have seemless transitioning between voice commands and launching programs. I very much doubt that we are going to be seeing a lot of installs or loading on ps4.

I am pretty sure its to improve performance and give a more pc like platform game devs. now wether its pc, xbox one or ps4 all games will be intsalled. I could be wrong but I swore the ps4 installs all games too.i know its wikipideia but i dont have time to search all over and find a better answer. do you have sources saying they wont need installs?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS4#Games

PlayGo

When a title is selected online, only a portion of the game data has to be transferred to the system before it can be started (e.g. the first level), with the remaining parts downloading during play, reducing waiting time. If users prefer to play their game directly from disc, PS4 will install data to the hard drive during play, eliminating loading times. This is accomplished via the system's background processor. Similarly, system updates are downloaded seamlessly in the background without interruption.[66] The PS4 also features technology that attempts to determine trends, including titles a gamer is likely to express interest in next, and then automatically download a small percentage of those games in the background, even in sleep mode, in order to save time.[14]

Thranks!

I haven't seen that interview before. It's strange because it really doesn't need to be installed. I wonder if it will be up to the developer or whether the consumer will have any say on what is installed and what isn't.

Even if it wasn't done for performence, ultimately HDD read faster than Bluray. Developers are likely taking advantage of that.

The Xbox One allows you to play games during the install, so that'll make dealing with installs less painful.

However, even if these first gen X1 games have mandatory installs. Its possible not all games will require them in the future. We'll have to wait and see.

Well, I do know that Toshiba gets a cut for every DVD media sold, and there is a start up fee to a "DVD association" if you want to start making and pressing DVD's.  This I why Toshiba tried to maintain that cashflow by introducing HD-DVDs.  I believe this similarly applies to Blu-Ray as well.

I doubt Sony is getting much out of it since the pack in Windows with their PC's..

What are you talking about?

I'll check out the video later.  At work right now.  But I still don't see how bundling Windows with their laptop negate them from earning royalties on a technology assumingly they have a part in.

Well Microsoft owns Windows..So it seems to be some sort of royalty stalemate...

It's a business move.  Sony pays to have WIndows installed on their PC's, Microsoft pays the BDA royalties for Blu-ray.  Just the way it is I think, unless I'm missing something.
