Forums - Gaming - Now that MS doesn't have DRM, will this give 3rd parties more incentives to do it themselves?

It's no secret that some publishers do not like used games, they use them as an excuse for their low sales. Some of them were probably extremely happy with the decisions MS made, and according to CBOAT on Neogaf (practically the most reliable source on the internet when it comes to videogames), EA and Ubisoft were happy with MS policies, with Activision being on the fence.

So the main question is this, will 3rd party have more restrictions when it comes to their games?

I know people will say that because MS pull out DRM it means they aren't going to do it, and this might be true to some extent, but I personally believe that, when it comes to 3rd parties alone, it will be different. First off, MS didn't hear us gamers, they heard EVERYONE, what I mean by that is that people on this site have been saying that MS did this because they paid attention to gamers feedback, I don't believe this. MS got ridiculed from everyone on the internet: 9GAG had tons of posts making fun of the Xbox One, Forbes made articles, Yahoo, and other mainstream sites did the same. Heck even in my country there was a newspaper article mentioning how Sony destroyed MS during E3, and when a newspaper of a country with a little less than 5 million people makes an article like that, you know something's wrong. Also the pre order numbers speak louder than everything gamers said on Neogaf, VGC, IGN, Youtube, etc

Having said that all that, what I mean is that if a third party comes out with DRM there won't be this much  flaimbait. Sure, gamers will complaint, but not at the same level as people did with MS, in reality it will be the same as gamers complaining about on disk DLC and online passes, gamers complaints didn't stopped companies from still doing this stuff.

We also have the next problem, the power of a brand name. Let's imagine EA comes out with full DRM for their games, no used games at all. Then Mass Effect 4 comes out and it sells millions of units; we all know this will happen, fans of a series will get a game almost regardless of the restrictions. This means ME4 sold even with DRM, this will encourage more publishers to do games with DRM, first EA, then Ubisoft, then Activision, etc. I do hope gamers are smarter than this and they proved my points wrong, but a brand name is very hard for people ignored. Companies know this and they will take advantage of this.

Maybe this won't be DRM per se, they will have other options: micro transactions, purely online games (like The Division, Destiny, etc), more DLC, etc. But my point is that 3rd parties will get worse and worse.

TL;DR: 3rd parties are evil!

They'll remain the same as always. They also saw the massive backlash MS received.

Read my post, the backlash for MS was from EVERYONE on the internet. If a 3rd party does this, the backlash will be much much smaller.

They can't do that if it's against the console policy. On PS4 at least the publishers can only implement an online pass. It's been confirmed.

No, those games likely won't sell. There is always backlash on DRM on discs.

Sony has already been there with music and others have time and time again.

A game with crazy similar DRM will not sell well... at least not as well as others without.

I don't think there's anything stopping 3rd parties from connecting to their servers once a game is inserted on a console. All this stuff will be done by the 3rd parties themselves, via connecting to their servers, restricting game content, etc. MS and Sony won't have anything to do with this.

Like I said I'm still not sure, a brand power is much more powerful than any DRM out there.

No, Sony and MS can tell publishers what they can and cannot implement on their console. DRM for physical discs is against policy now. This isn't PC.

No one is stupid enough to do it now. DRM is stupid and benefits no one.
