Forums - Nintendo - Why Nintendo won't drop the price of Wii U this year

It seems Nintendo is still trying hard to ripoff those poor, poor casuals. All they want is some Just Dance and party game loving, and they're gonna have to pay through the nose to get it with Nintendo.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Not getting one till holiday 2014 anyway! It's bound to have one by then.

$100 cut in April to coincide with Mario Kart 8 would be pretty huge and a good way to start off the fiscal year.

Not wrong! If it gets a big cut like that I might not even bother to wait!

our dollar just fell 2.5cents today to 2010 value haha. I wonder how Microsoft and Sony feel about their prices now.

Maybe they should try to recreate what happened with the 3DS, which means price drop + flow of good games and here we go again!

Awesome. I've already paid in full so it's too late! We were already getting a better deal then the UK! I read an article on IGN explaining the conversions.

They can enjoy lower than GameCube sales then if they want.

No one is forcing them to lower the price, the market place just doesn't care about the system and I don't think another Mario platformer and a direct sequel to DKCR is enough to bring in tons of people. There's a lot of redundancy in their lineup too with the three biggest games all being mascot platfomers (NSMBU, Mario 3D World, and DKC: TF) but that's what they're going to have to try and work with.

Maybe without Mario Kart this Christmas there's no point really, it's not going to sell like gangbusters either way, so yeah, maybe they should just pocket the extra profit from Nintendo fans that just have to play Mario 3D World and move on.

The other problem is Nintendo fans are basically conditioned to not pay a lot for hardware as Nintendo traditionally makes cheaply priced hardware. And coming off the 3DS, a lot of people are not willing to jump in because they feel the same thing is going to happen again, the Wii U is actually selling quite a good deal worse than the 3DS ever did.

My personal feeling is MS will cave on the XB1 price too and drop to $399.99 just before launch to match Sony.

They will do fine this holiday without a price cut, we will see plenty of deals/bundles and a solid line up of exclusives and multiplats. Save the price cut for April alongside Mario Kart 8 to start off the next fiscal year strong.

I think the actual reason is because they already did it with the 3DS, and the resultz were not that great. Short term results.

I don't know about that. The price drop, coupled with actually getting Mario and Mario Kart, along with other games down the road, boosted sales form minmal ot healthy again. I wouldn't say the results were not that great. The system has sold over 30 million units by now. Compared to the Vita's barely over 5, I'd call that something.

But I do think it would be in Nintendo's best interest to drop the price by at least $50, give it an even hundred cheaper than the PS4 (deluxe model anyway).

They'll sell less than the GameCube this year in North America IMO. GameCube is absolutely trouncing the Wii U right now in month to month sales. GCN had Super Mario Sunshine, Animal Crossing, and Metroid Prime its first holiday which IMO is equal or better than Mario 3D World + DKC: TF + Wii Fit (I think this fad is done).

I just don't think there's a huge number of people willing to pay $300+ for a system that's primarily centered around the 4-5 major exclusives Nintendo is able to deliver any given year and not much else in terms of third party support.

They needed Mario Kart more than Mario 3D World this holiday IMO.
