Forums - Nintendo - Why Nintendo won't drop the price of Wii U this year

I disagree with the logic of the OP. WiiU is getting crushed in sales by PS360 and if they get a price cut when the new systems launch (likely) they'll crush WiiU even more unless it gets a price cut as well.

Yes, great Nintendo games will bring in Nintendo fans but if Nintendo wants to expand beyond that limited base, they need the casuals or the core. The system is too pricey for casuals (and with cheap Android systems soon to flood the market will seem even more expensive to this audience) while offering too little for them (WiiU Party and a couple Mario side scrollers being the only titles they will probably notice). Price needs to drop to $250 (for the deluxe with pack-in game) for real success here.
Core is even worse. For core they need massive 3rd party support and more-over 3rd party exclusives. None of that will happen without vastly increased WiiU sales. They won't be any massive increase (aside from normal holiday increase) unless there's a significant price drop.

However I've given up all hope of predicting what Nintendo will do. Maybe they'll chance it with the higher price rather than take a loss and if it's still dead in the water come early 2014 they'll begin readying a replacement for 2016 and live off 3DS for the meantime, kinda like GC days.

You people need to stop this ARROGANT attitude that thinks nintendo's only chance is being WAY cheaper. Wii u, PS4 and Xone are all equal competitors no matter how much you try to undermine wii u. Price helps but the deciding factor are the GAMES so just keep quiet and see how each console does in the market.

I like how you cherrypick one line and ignore the context it's said in.

I don't understand haters like you.  And yes I'm calling you a Nintendo Hater.  Why?  Because if you are a real Nintendo fan the only thing that matters is WiiU has Nintendo games.  It (will) have Mario, Zelda and some other of your Nintendo favorites and that's all you need to buy it and enjoy it.

But you have to delude yourself into thinking 3rd parties are going to put all their big franchises on it so it'll be another PS4/XB1 clone.   Why?   Why is that so important to you?  I can only assume because you don't love Nintendo enough to feel their games are worth buying a system for.

Wii - Nintendo's most successful home console wasn't a massive success because of high quality 3rd party ports.  It barely had any.   It was a massive success because of Nintendo games.   While DS had massive 3rd party support, it's sales were still primarily driven by Pokemon, Nintendogs, Brain Age, Animal Crossing, NSMB and Mario Kart.    Everything else was gravy and without all that 3rd party support DS would have still sold massively.

WiiU so far does not have a Wii Sports/Fit or Nintendogs/Brain Age size hit and the big Nintendo classics - Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Zelda are still a ways from coming and in the meantime the system/price point/dirth of games just isn't appealing to most people.   Even with those games WiiU's sales will be less than stellar.  Like Gamecubes.  But you know what?  Nintendo fans here loved the Gamecube - lousy 3rd party support and all.

Love the WiiU for what it is.   Stop trying to make it something it's not, and has no intention of ever being (an equal to PS4/XB1).  If you need it to be another PS4 to love it, then you are the Nintendo hater here.

I think it is because they are making profit; tiny; but still profit; so there is no need for the price. Since there are no major game out there it would not make much sense either. They will have a price cut; when a must own game is released, so that the 2 can potentate each other.

I can't believe someone could write all this shit. I love nintendo franchises but how does that stop me from wanting other franchises i like on wii u. a nintendo system with all the thirds wouldn't be a ps4/xone clone, it would be a SNES clone. seriously, seek help.

There you said it yourself.  You had to go all the way back to SNES to find a comparible.  Honestly after N64, GC, Wii and now WiiU (each with less 3rd party support than the system before) do you really expect WiiU to ever become a SNES clone?  Serious?   It's not going to happen.   Either accept WiiU for what it is, or drop it.   It is not, nor ever will be an SNES clone.

gamecube had much better third party support than N64 and wii. you still haven't given me an explanation about why I shouldn't want 3rd party games on nintendo systems. anyway, regardless of your whining wii u's situation with third parties will probably shape up nicely. just wait and see for yourself.

No reason you shouldn't but with WiiU's horrid sales and it being not in the same power league with other Next gen systems there is no reason to assume it will ever have the sort of support SNES or even Gamecube had.   I wish WiiU had that support too, it would make me much more inclined to buy one.  But as is, if I buy one it'll be solely on the strength of Nintendo franchises and I'll get a PS4/XB1 if I want 3rd party games.   Heck, even IF they were all ported to WiiU I'd still want a PS4/XB1 for them because they'll be much better on those systems.   Which is the main problem Wii had and WiiU will have as well.   People will always buy multi-plats on the more powerful systems.

Getting back to the main point, you've been ranting and raving on your fellow Nintendo fans who are calling it like it is, because they are justifably dissatisfied with WiiU's shortcomings.  While you assert all this 3rd party support will suddenly materialize.  Fact is, they've bought or will buy a WiiU anyway.   If your projected 3rd party support never materializes, will you?   Sure doesn't sound like it.   People have a right to complain, it doesn't make them haters.  It means they care.

You're wrong, I plan to purchase a Wii U and a PS4.

bolded: multis will LOOK better on ps4/xone, the games themselves will be the same and the graphical difference won't be big.

If the Wii U doesn't get a price drop, I think it's fair to say Nintendo simply doesn't care about their console division as much as the 3DS.

They rushed to rescue the 3DS, giving it a huge price drop within like 6 months, made sure it got Mario 3D Land AND Mario Kart 7 for its first holiday, even putting Retro on Mario Kart to get it done on time. And they secured an exclusivity deal for Monster Hunter, the biggest Japanese 3rd party franchise.

The Wii U gets no price cut, gets DKC (5 million seller on Wii) instead of Mario Kart (20 million seller on Wii) for the holiday season, gets a Wind Waker remake instead of an Ocarina of Time one (OoT is far more popular), and gets no type of big third party exclusivity deal like Monster Hunter is on handhelds.

I think Nintendo views 3DS as a higher priority than Wii U. Even now Iwata says their no.1 priority in investors meetings is getting 3DS sales to be better in the West, not the Wii U situation, which is far more dire. Why is the Wii U getting less help despite struggling even more?

Let's say Nintendo sells 5 million units by Xmas.  Do they ever need to sell more?  I mean, nintendo fans literally buy every game nintendo releases.  I don't think they really care about they price of the unit because they know that they have 2million solid buys for every game they'll ever release.
